How Muhammed Ali Abdur-Rahkman got to Michigan

Submitted by BlueCube on

Nice story on Mlive as someone mentioned yesterday about how Muhammed Ali made it to Michigan. As has been mentioned, a former coach from Buffalo called Beilein. Coach Rooney, who is now in real estate, but still watched a lot of area basketball asked MAAR's coach why he hadn't signed and he was told he was waiting. Rooney told MAAR's coach he would make some calls. The coach throught it was a joke when he heard he had a message from Beilein who was the first person Rooney called. His next call, if Beilein wasn't interested, was going to be Sean Miller at Arizona, who he also had connections with. It wasn't necessary.

Very good read and you have to feel happy for this kid.

I stand corrected I thought this was the story already posted. I've read so much stuff over this recruit, which isn't a bad thing, that I just got posts confused. It's positive news a slightly different article and it's the off season. Sorry BlueCube.

The first article that was posted actually mentioned that this story was coming, as I recall, so this is simply the story that had been promised earlier. The first article was more a discussion of the immediate impact of the commitment itself and what we were getting in Abdur-Rahkman, not the "how" piece.

Speaking of this article, thanks for sharing it, OP. Excellent read about how someone from Beilein's past helped add to Michigan's future.

...you wonder how a kid with the talent to play at a Major hides in plain sight. It's not like Allentown is in South America somewhere. Here's hoping he has a great career in maize and blue.

I guess with the huge number of high school basketball programs in America coupled with the relatively limited number of scholarships that D-1 programs have to offer, it's easier for prospects to fly under the radar and there are mor opportunities for coaches to find a diamond in the rough.

This story made me really happy. Hopefully MARR can give us a 10 minutes a game next year and keep the offense alive when Caris is on the bench.

If MARR turns out to be a sleeper beast..well I think we can just about anoint Coach B the sleeper whisperer

Well, there is Cassius Winston, a 2016 point guard out of U-D Jesuit being recruited by both Michigan and MSU, among others. He seems more likely at this point to end up at MSU according to 247, so there could be some Cassius vs. Muhammad Ali matchups down the line.

Coincidentally, Winston is getting some visitors today:

Because it seems like 1) Beilein and Co. honestly didn't know he existed for a while so it's hard to sya MAAR is a back-up plan. Maybe he would've been offered way sooner if he was playing in Philly or NYC like the article said and 2) I'm skeptical but if it's true that this guy doesn't BS anyone and MAAR really is better than a lot of Philly players, we may have stumbled upon another diamond in the rough
