How much attrition in a typical year?

Submitted by StephenRKass on

So, the football roster changes all the time. We have already seen attrition, which can be categorized in at least six ways:

  1. Academic (Tate Forcier?)
  2. Health related (edit:  had Terrence Robinson, wrong name)
  3. Fit with coaches, scheme, dealing with coaching change (Je'Ron Stokes?)
  4. PT, or probably lack thereof (Posada?)
  5. Behavioral (Kellen Jones?)
  6. Unrenewed 5th year.

Now we see Chris Barnett leaving, seemingly for reason 3 (lack of fit with coaches.)

That means attrition of 3 in the last few days, in Stokes, Posada, and now Barnett. There was also the non-enrollment of Kellen Jones, and a couple others gone for health related reasons, reported at the beginning of Fall practice.

I have two questions:

  1. Do insiders know if more attrition is expected this year? (no names, position groups, or other hints needed or wanted.)
  2. If one of you has access to the numbers, I'd like a sense of the running average for attrition over the last 10 years.

Some have suggested that all the recent attrition is pretty normal, and I can buy that. But I'd like to see the numbers. I'm wondering at what point there should be "concern" over the current level of attrition.

I think it's too early to assume that Barnett is leaving because of lack of fit with coaches. Let's wait on the facts for that one, yeah? I think this wouldn't hurt quite as bad if the most recent three transfers weren't at positions that we needed depth in.

But it doesn't matter. Knowing why someone left has no impact on the fact that they are actually gone.

Barnett hurts, but hopefully AJ and Funchess bulk up and are ready.. plus I still havent lost faith in Ricardo to be an absolute monster mismatch.. (ball skills and low end speed reciever with size of a TE... )

Plus, speculating why an 18 year old kid made any decision is equivalent to trying to figure out the connection between grapes and tigers.

He was recruited by Hoke, not RR, so lack of fit with coaches does not seem accurate. Lack of fit with his pants seems likely to have been the true motivating factor.

When a freshman leaves this early, especially one who was headed for a red shirt like Posada, I think it has more to do with being home sick than playing time.

I was thinking the same thing.  It comes as no surprise that the two freshmen who left also come from rather distant states (Fla and Tx).  Kids sometimes show up, realize that they won't be playing early, and decide they don't want to stay that far away from home.  It happens, and I wish Barnett the best.

Just a little perspective: This is a link to an article about attrition after Will Muschamp took over at Florida. And this is a link to a similar article about the Randy Edsall transition at Maryland. Hope that helps.

I have a question that doesn't deserve it's own thread but if the class size reaches 28 like it looks like it may, might we go after a project qb? I only ask this because when the number was 26 we were crammed. With 28 it seems like 2 more spots might give a chance for a little more qb depth?

unless we can snake oil some really, really good player from Purdue again.  I'd stick to our major needs at WR, DT, OT, and maybe a stud RB like Dunn or Brown.  I wouldn't use a spot for another TE either unless a really good player could be found who could play right away (doesn't need a year or two beefing up).  With Barnett leaving, we're punked at TE for a while any way.  And I can't see giving up a scholarship at a position of greater need just to get another warm body.

I don't know if you caught any of ESPN's Elite 11 QB show, but Purdue had a QB on there, Austin Appleby..I would guess that's about it..To be honest, that would be pretty funny if we grabbed him from there, personally I would go with NO QB this year, but pissing off Purdue once more may be worth it.

I wonder how much attrition happened in Bo's first year.  It seems there is some analogy, as both Bo and Hoke came in an ramped up the toughness demands.  (Not that all of the transfers are because it is too tough, but still...).

I wonder if this opens up the possiblilty of signing Ron Thompson now?  I'm not sure how badly we need more tight ends with Funchess and Williams already verbally committed.  But there's no doubt about that Thompson is a talented tight end and he already has chemistry with Shane Morris.
