How Graduate Transfer Would Work - Doubt We Hear Much Until Late Spring/Early Summer

Submitted by alum96 on

I know there has some swirling rumors on the 5th year QB transfer front, especially Kevin Hogan, and someone asked me yesterday in the Hogan thread when they would declare - i.e. Feb 15th.  I had no idea so did some reading up.

From all indications I doubt we will really hear much until this summer.  I looked up a lot of stories about Russell Wilson from 2011 and he transferred in June.   Brian had mentioned Golson from ND as a candidate as well so I went to look up some stories on him and he said he plans to enroll this semester to graduate in May, which many of the media are stoking the fire to mean he too will transfer.  Stanford's semester ends in June.  So other than rumors I don't think we can expect much concrete on this end until earliest April.  These guys would take part in their own program's spring practies this February/March and miss ours.  Which is another reason I cannot imagine they say a peep in the winter - can't imagine practicing with 1 team when you have told the world you are leaving for another program.

In one of the Wilson stories they noted that up to that point in 2011 only 10 fifth year transfers of QBs had ever happened prior to Wilson so it was once very rare.  This year you may have 3 big names on the move (or not) with Miller, Golson, and Hogan.  Also in a story from November I dug up, Coach Shaw said Hogan "did not want to discuss his future" with Shaw last spring, which the reporter at the time thought meant more of Hogan going to the NFL or staying at Stanford.  But apparently scouts have dropped their assessment of Hogan this year - a year ago he was getting some Luck halo effect and thought of as a 3rd roundish guy, now he is more of a 3rd day pick with some concerns of a long delivery and slow release.

So I a not really sure how the politics of this is going to work out.  Most guys who are 5th year senior QBs who move to a new program I assume don't have NFL futures.  All 3 guys who could be on the move this year most likely do (even if not at the QB position).  So step 1 is to say I am not declaring for the NFL draft in the coming weeks.  Step 2 is more vague - they will remain enrolled in school to graduate in May/June and unless they pop off their mouth they would continue to practice with their current school this spring.  Then once they graduate they would be eligible to transfer.  I would assume this would make for some uncomfortable discussions with coaches due to the timing of it all.

Here is a cut and paste of Golson's stats for 2014.  He had 2 terrible games v USC and ASU and became a turnover machine with 8 fumbles and 14 INT.   That said he played very well against FSU and Louisville and Michigan.  His stats overall were not dissimilar to a Blake Sims or Devin Gardner 2013 vintage.   Looks like Kelly is going the Zaire route in the future and some message boards are saying Georgia or South Carolina are destinations for Golson but if you though dealing with the pressure of Kelly was fun I cannot imagine trying to pick up Spurrier's offense in 3 months.  He'd be more dynamic than Hogan with higher  upside but more downside - but maybe better coaching gets him to cut back on the TOs.

Long story short - no one new will be here for spring practice for QB, it will be our recruits.  Any new face won't show up until August camp.   And we probably have months of radio silence on this front, at least officially.

Fun fact - Morris has 0 TD and 5 INT in his career.

But "no to Golson" and his 3400 yards, 29 TD 14 INT.  And 2 years starting.  The first 80% of which were almost all wins

Golson has issues but if you think Harbaugh can "fix" Morris but is helpless to "help" Golson you are thinking with your heart not logic.  What do you think the Notre Dame fanbase would be saying if Harbaugh became their coach a week ago? "OMG with all of Golson's raw tools, and Harbaugh's coaching he will probably win the Heisman."

If I recall correctly, NC State had move on from Wilson due to his baseball career. He was not around Raleigh to participate in 'voluntary' summer workouts because he was busy playing 2nd base in the Rockies minor league system. It was a unique situation.

I forgot about the other QB. I also think a lot of folks were in Wilson's ear telling him he had a better shot at baseball due to his size, "experts" thought he was too small to be an NFL QB. However, his heart was still in football, and he gave it another shot at Wisconsin.

Those of us in Colorado wish he would have stuck with baseball and the Rockies instead of beating the Broncos in the Super Bowl.

BTW - the Rockies have had good luck with other college QB's. Todd Helton - Tennessee, Seth Smith - Ole Miss (backed up Eli, I don't think he ever took a snap), and Kyle Parker - Clemson who was the starter there but left early for BB as Tajh Boyd emerged. Parker played mostly in AAA last year and was called up late in the year.

This is obviously overthinking something that has very little likelihood of happening. That said, it would be fantastic to get any of the 3. It might even make it possible to reshirt Shane Morris, which might help him and the team a huge amount. Yes, this is unlikely, but it would be great to give the talent lefty time to develop, right?

I'm thinking Morris or Speight will be starting QB. Unless there is a homerun guy out there......B. Miller, but that wouldn't happen.

Don't know a thing about him.  All the same timetables apply to any player.  We are obviously all just speculating.

Hogan is the most logical choice since he was recruited by Harbaugh to Stanford, and apparently is (allegedly if you believe SI) unhappy with how conservative and run oriented Shaw is.  Maybe he'd have those same issues with Harbaugh as he has 1 year to show NFL scouts his upside.  Or maybe he'd consider Harbaugh as a guy who can develop him in 1 year back into a 3rd-4th round potential pick for the 16 draft.

Damn that is ridiculous.  I know it almost never comes up because how often does a school abolish football but you punish the kids by making them sit out a year because their program disappears?  This is like the NCAA pot rule - just stupid.  Every kid in UAB's program should be able to go elsewhere immediately and without penalty.

The UAB qb, Cody Clements, passed for over 2000 yards and completed something like 65% of his passes. He's also originally from California. That's the good news. Less good is the fact that he started at Washington State, wound up at Cerritos College, I believe, and then transferred to UAB. I'm not certain if he'd have one or two years of eligibility left.

Perhaps of minor note is that the NCAA rules, in a search of them, don't seem to places any particular restriction on when you make the decision. Academically, you have to already have your bachelor's, of course, but that seems to be the only real restriction aside from meeting normal one-time transfer rules (which you basically do by default if you stayed in one place for four years). It makes sense though that many of these decisions aren't made until the spring / summer then.

I would take Hogan with open arms. He's won a Rose Boel and played in another. He would instantly be the best passer we've had since Henne. Ultimately I think Malzone will be the best of the trio, and getting the chance to redshirt him next year would be great. Also, Shane, Wilton, and Malzone would get a full year under Harbaugh, and I would be pretty confident with our QB position moving forward.
