How good would Oregon have been in Big10?

Submitted by jimboblue on

How good would have Oregon been if in the Big Ten? Would they have still gone undefeated? Obviously i ask because the similarities in Michigans and Oregons offense's and because i have no doubt Denard is going to much better than Oregon QB Derron Thomas. I think Oregons O would have shredded the big 10, just as i believe michigans will if left alone. Most interesting game of theirs i watched was california, where they struggled because tailback Lamichael James was out. Showed me how huge it would to get a back like Hart in this offense.

umm i doubt it...  Are you forgetting this is the same Oregon that dropped 52 or w/e on stanford..

They would have put incredible pressure on cousins, turnovers would of ensued.

It might be a close game early on, but i bet Oregon would beat them by at least 14-21 pts

I think Oregons O would not do the things Michigans did (Denard fumbles, Multiple dropped balls,Lewan penalty killing drives, missed field goals) instead these would have turned into scores. I think the idea with this offense is jump out ahead and then match score for score until your pace wears out the other team, and you blow them out.

Are we talking about the same Sparty team?

The same one that had to run a trick play to eek out a win against ND and again against Northwestern?

The same one that got blown out Iowa?

The same one that barely got by Purdue?

The same one that had their best season in 50 years, went 11-1 and still couldn't get any respect to make it into a BCS game?

Hmmm... definitely not the same old Sparty.

If it was around the time MSU played Wisconsin, they might have given the Ducks all they could handle. But I think MSU peaked right around the Wisconsin-UM weeks and never looked anywhere near as good afterwards. They were lucky to escape the Purdue and NW games and of course got annhiliated with the Rose Bowl on the line against Iowa.

I would be shocked if Alabama wins by less than 17 points.

Sounds like MSU should can Dantonio and promote Treadwell to HC. MSU played its best ball when he was running the show this season.

Maybe St. Mark can stay on in a figure head role until he is 105 like Joe Pa and rack up a bunch of career wins that he had little to do with.

These are always tough hypotheticals.   I think OSU and Wisc could have given them games, but MSU has been puzzling.   They played very good against Wisc and UM, but since that point I think they have been pretty poor.  They manned up against PSU, but they were in trouble against Ill, NW, Pur and got smacked by Iowa.

I think if they played right now Oregon would beat them very badly.

They would have easily won the Legens Division this year; however, they would have lost to Pitt in the Perles-Mason Big 10 Championship Game.

I've decided to take your final appeal on a pro bono basis and will continue my diligent efforts to get you out of jail based simply on your posts in that thread last week.  Don't get too comfortable behind those bars . . .

I told a joke I heard on the radio on the ND investigation thread.  I guess the joke was deemed inappropriate by the mods.  I agree that the joke was inappropriate and should have never made it to mgoblog.  I blame Tim Conway Jr. because I heard that joke on his radio show.

I will take my punishment since it is deserved.  I just have a long journey of entering CAPTCHA everytime I make a post.

if that.  They are pretty darn good.   Could have lost to Wisconsin, if they played them late.  Maybe to OSU if they played early.  But Sparty?  Come on.

Well, Mason was fired because he had some truly epic fails.  Like losing to us in the Buffalo Stampede.  And also his final loss in the bowl game, where Minny blew a 31 point lead.

IMO, he shouldn't have been fired, because he actually made Minny somewhat relevant.  Joke's on the Gophers.

I did not say that all 3 would beat Oregon I said one of them would trip them up. MSU being one of the options for a upset. Since they are co big ten champs and have only one loss ( a tottall melt down to Iowa) you can't just say well it's Sparty so they would lose.

it isn't so much that no one wants to give them respect.  It is mostly because they barely beat several crappy teams and had to get very lucky to avoid 3 or 4 losses..

Oregon had 1 close game against CAL.

You will get the chance to see if they are for real against Bama..

I agree with you on that point. They have earned some respect after going 11-1, however they didn't exactly do it in dominating fashion. I don't know about you but every week no matter who they were playing I was expecting their luck to finally run out. It didn't but fans nor the BCS were overly impressed which is why they are on the same time as us on New Year's day.

Could we please get over this "MSU could be in a BCS game if they had lost at a different time" meme. MSU looked horrible against mediocre teams and didn't just look bad in their loss, they were down by 5 scores at halftime. MSU is very, very lucky to have the record they have and everyone outside of East Lansing knows it. The BCS didn't show them any love because they don't deserve any.

Michigan St.  vs. Iowa

Michigan St. vs. Purdue

Michigan St. vs PSU

Michigan St. vs. Oregon?

It is my belief that MSU was a three legged mule destined to hell disguised as a Clydesdale until Iowa exposed them. Now I just consider them a Zebra. An anomaly this year that will become extinct next year.

Its tough because the Pac-10 was relatively godawful this year, so I'm not sure how their dominance would translate to the Big 10.   They smacked around Stanford, clearly the best team on their schedule and only struggled in one game-- but I think it's tough to say that means they would run through the Big 10.    That being said, if they were in the SEC, they would be lucky to break .500.

Sincerely,

Gary Danielson
