How do we decide who we want to take?

Submitted by cypress on

Call me the classic worrier, but I think about this a lot. We've been so out of balance on our roster in the past and I just think its a mistake to go heavy at certain positions and be thin at others. For example: if we take Clark and Willingham along with Bryant..we have 3 spots left and would still be in on a lot of top prospects, which would leave us with tough choices. If McClure wants in, we are loaded at DB and the decision to take Carter looks questionable. Clark may be a TE, but at 6'2 210, it doesn't seem likely. We need Barnett still, but we also need to lock up Fisher, get a QB and a DT. Rawls: Good player, but with 8 RBs already, can we afford to pass up on a position of greater need to take him?

I guess I'm glad I don't have to make these choices but its a little nerve-wracking to think we may run out of spots with some top talent still out there.

If we hold onto our 14 and get Willingham, Clark and Bryant, I'd love to get Fisher, Barnett and Cooper. Pass on a QB this year, pass on Rawls, pass on McClure and Raven. If McClure and Raven wanted to commit, I guess I'd find a way but we would be adding to a crowed DB picture and then maybe we'd be kicking ourselves for taking so many before them. Guess I'll just have to wait til signing day..hope it works out.

This is probably your best course of action:

Stop posting threads about this stuff here and elsewhere on the Internet, leave your computer, log back in next Wednesday, and watch what ACTUALLY happens in recruiting instead of creating 70 hypotheticals.

Not until he fills out a hypothetical depth chart worrying about the Spring Roster. Then worries about players making it through spring practice without getting injured. Then worrying about potential transfers, then worrying about academic issues, then worrying about summer workouts, then worrying about summer camps, then worrying about fall practices, then worrying about Dann O'Neill returning for the home opener, then worrying about the Big House lights functioning correctly for the Notre Dame game, then worrying about Ron English returning to the Big House, then worrying about the karmic gods in the San Diego State game.

That doesn't even get us to the conference opener versus Minnesota. In sum, plenty for cypress to worry about.

so does that mean that next thursday he can start worrying about next years class for us all?!!

Start?  He should already be worrying about 2012 . . . and 2013.  On Thursday he can start worrying about 2014.

Taylor will be a STAR I promise, I watched him twice this season vs St. Marys and Brother Rice,  I have a cousin on each team. Taylor is very raw if he comes in and works hard he will be a star Highland Park HS is very ghetto and can't pay coaches he has never had actual postion training, He is rated a three star off of natural god given abilities.

Well we have 6 spots left and 3 are rumored to go to Bryant, Clark and Willingham. That would leave 3 left between Bellomy, Rawls, Fisher, Cooper, McClure, Raven and whoever else pops up. I just wonder what happens if we have to make some tough choices. And I know a lot of people like to just think everything will work out, which is fine since we can't affect anything anyway, but it's not like the SEC where we can just make some room.

No I'm pretty sure we have 21 spots to fill in this class and we're at 14. I believe it went up to 21 after Forcier left, which opened a scholarship spot. If 3 go to bryant, Clark and Willingham that would leave 4 open between those listed. I'm guessing all 6 would not commit and if they did, that would be amazingly unheard of. You can, in fact, make room which is why I don't think some of these kids even hold Michigan offers yet.

I think the coaches are going to wait to offer them when they actually know there is a spot for them.

We're all operating under the assumption that the roster decisions of the old staff are correct. I'm not trying to be mean to Kovacs or anything but in all honesty would he be starting under any other coaching staff here at Michigan? I personally don't think so. Three years ago he would have been a great scout player. Hoke is going to have to activly renew his walk-on scholarship and he may not do that especially If Kovacs is in the way of us landing a highly recruited prospect. Let's not forget Nick Sheridan was a "starting roster spot" and the coaches took his scholarship away as well. He may be a leader and a Rudy type but I don't think Kovacs is going to be a 4 year starter. Again just my opinion and not trying to rag on Kovacs.

Let's not forget that the reason the old staff was fired was because they couldn't make the right decisions on defense and couldn't coach it. If an "F" student gives you a copy of their homework to copy are you going to copy it? Or throw it away and start over? Just saying.

You are right, technically it doesn't matter if we have a small 2012 class. However there are a lot of talented players in Mi and Ohio that we have a great shot with and it would be a shame if we had to turn them away because of limited scholarships. Especially when you consider many will be higher rated then who we have now. Wormley, O'Brien, Godin, Richardson, Ross, Jenkins-Stone...not a yr where you want to have limited scholarships to give.

You're going to have a heart attack or nervous breakdown if you let recruiting get to you this much.  You've started 8 threads on this shit in the past five days, and two already today.  Not that you shouldn't start the threads, but if recruiting honestly affects your life you might need a break.

McClure is a stud DB, he'd be the best out of all we've signed. Some of them are going to convert over to Safety...Rawls, I think, is a great RB with lil attention bc of his grades. I def. Want both them in this class. It will all play it self out and I think well get the best talent out of the remaining targets

For one, presenting hypothetical situations isn't going to solve porblems, no matter what the problem is.

This is also a pretty good problem to have if you're Michigan. One class never makes up an entire starting lineup or even half of it in most cases, so one class isn't going to make or break anything, unless we end up with ten players like we were at a week ago. Creating depth is extremely important.

The coaches will find a way to keep any of their I'll-die-if-I-don't-get-him recruits. They know the cc will trigger some attrition in the coming months, thus freeing up a few additional roster slots either this year or next. If someone like McClure causes them to go one over the original head-count, no problem. A greyshirt situation will not result.
