How did your Mgoblog life start?

Submitted by Big_H on

It's friday and the weekend is finally here! So I thought I would start something interesting to talk about. Something fun. Something other than who will win the NCAA 2014 game cover vote.

So let's hear it. How did your Mgoblog life start?

For me it's been a fun journey. It all started late 2009/early 2010 when I was really getting into Michigan recruiting. To be honest I had almost no clue who to follow or where to look. I will even admit I used to look at Mlive for any information on Michigan football or recruiting(I would never post on there though). I would check the front pages of Rivals for any free info but that just wasn't good enough. Then there was one day I was looking for new sites and I ran across this Mgoblog. At first, I really didn't know what to think there was so much content with all this crazy shit going on in it. I didn't understand how to even start looking around. I didn't like it, but the urge to come back for some recruiting news led me back every once and awhile. By 2011 I started to check the blog weekly and started to read the comments on topics that intrigued me. I started to learn the Mgoblog lingo and inside jokes also how to not act like an idiot when something is being discussed that I don't agree with. Man I was starting to feel comfortable around here even though I did not have an account, yet. Then 2012 rolled around and I found myself coming to this site multiple times daily. With that it was time to start an account. It's been great ever since and I always have the information I want and more. I feel like this site has made me a better Michigan fan and I'm really glad I stumbled upon it.

I hope to hear some good stories and sorry for any grammar errors. If you don't like the content than get a mod to delete it. Go Blue!

Used to read a lot on CBS Sports, but found the content lacking.  Looked up Michigan Blogs and came upon this site.  Been working on my adverse possession claim ever since...  Cannot get enough..

I wanted a Michigan blog to troll real good. Saw this one and thought it seemed like a good one. Now I'm just waiting in the wings to seize my opportunity to troll you ass clowns real hard.

EDIT: Damn, shouldn't have said that out loud.

EDIT EDIT : What I mean is that I can't remember the year, but it was something really cool, like lets say the UFRs. I remember reading those and thinking "this is exactly what I want to read." Increasingly became hooked, started reading the other stuff, and finally joined. Now I've been a positive member of this board and love each and every one of you.

I don't remember how I stumbled on it, but I trolled it for awhile and realized there were people like me who had an almost unhealthy obsession with Michigan football.  I was blown away by the content and analysis on the front page and I finally signed up during the coaching change.  There was a bunch of us that came on board then.  I still remember the first time I got negged.  I was pretty pissed and embarassed.

I was looking for spring game insider info in 2009 (hoping 2008 would go away from inside my head) and found MGoBlog. Lurked for a few months and then signed up for an account to be a smartass about someone's grammar.

As the comments everywhere else deteriorated during the coaching search I kept seeing this place pop up in searches. I finally decided to sign up and eventually even posted something.

I knew about MGoBlog, or had at least been hearing about it, for a few years before actually starting to read it. A few of my friends really got into it early on but for whatever reason, I didn't. Up until midway through the summer of my junior and senior year, I relied on all my UM info from ESPN and, regrettably, Bleacher Report. To be honest, my freshman year I didn't really care much about Michigan Athletics. I just enjoyed the experience, and was still more of an NFL guy. i grew up never really having a particular college affiliation. By sophomore year I started caring a bit, and by junior year I was really into it. Still, didn't use MGoBlog just yet.

I started branching out into MGoBlog when I heard that Kalis was strongly considering coming here, and I knew that ESPN wouldn't be reporting much on it. I also got tired of all the shit-writing and Neanderthal-like commenting that you find on Bleacher Report (seriously, its like a bunch of 5th grade trash-talking). I didn't know much about recruiting at the time, but after Kalis committed, I started using MGoBlog on an occasional basis. I didn't start posting until after The Game in 2011, when I really started getting into recruiting. I needed a place to vent about wondering whether or not top guys were coming here, and this is the perfect forum for that. Also switched from a Blackberry to a Droid around that time, so I could get MGoBlog on my phone and have it wherever I went. That didn't help the growing obsession.

I like to think my mgoblog life started freshmen year at Michigan, 1998... during the golden age of the Every Three Weekly.  I never hesitated picking up and reading an already perused copy off a North Campus bathroom stall floor.  However, my official mgoblog days did not begin until I stumbled onto the site during the springtime before the Horror.

The horror . . . someone on another site said that mgoblog was featuring only cats.  I don't like cats - but they are better than reading pathetic rants.  Been reading here ever since.  Best place on the internet.

(though not as much lately), going back to the days of Doug Karsh and Dennis Fithian.  At some point, they had a guest on (Wednesday mornings, I think) talking Michigan football.  He sounded somewhat knowledgeable.  After a few weeks of hearing his comments, I listened closer to the introduction and found that he was from some place called MGOBLOG.  What a great find.  Now I don't have to be near a radio and can find Michigan information any time of day.

Heh. This thread sounds like an AA meeting.  Hi!  My name is Jericho and I'm a Mgoblog addict.

Of course it is an addiction for me.  When I went out of the country for vacation last year, I pined for this site.  I came back from vacation and realized I missed the weekend where we got all those commits.  I nearly wept.

I wish I could actually remember the exact thing that brought me to the site, but at my current job I have a little more time for browsing than my previous practice. Browsed for about 3-4 months but got involved when Tay started his whole community garden project. Still read A LOT more than I acutally post.

Started by searching Michigan Football Recruiting, which took me to another site which was ran by a gentlemen from the UK. He linked to MgoBlog and after reading some of witty and hilarious posts on here, I signed up almost immediately.

The first post I remember reading was tracking Dave Brandon's plane as it landed in Louisiana to chat with Les before hiring Brady. I also checked in to see what TomVH would post about recruiting after seeing his name pop up on a terrible UM football recruiting group on Facebook.

I found my way here, and became an immediate addict, after we got the tar beat out of us by Oregon in 2007.  I still rememember the banner: "Crying Like Little Girls Since . . ."

I've been lurking forever. I remember coming for the UFRs even back in the Terry Malone/Jim Herrmann days and recruiting boards with Brandon Graham and co. Probably the 2005 season or earlier.

I was looking up Info on a recrute in 2010 and saw Mgoblog.com listed. I clicked on it and read things for about a year before I made a profile.

Lurked for a couple years before "The Horror" and came in after that event...

It's been a strange ride though that experience and the Rodriguez years.

It's good to be back the past couple years after so much craziness.

I try to do my best to follow every Big Ten team during my free time in school and this site was probably the best to get UM info. Given the amount of articles, blogs, forum topics along with commentary, the amount of information related to all things Michigan was better here than going to several other sites I've used in the past. After being a long time reader, I figured why not join. Its always healthy to see things from a different point of view when they aren't related to all things OSU. Moreover, at some point, I'm gonna need help with my visit to AA. So far I've enjoyed it along with the articles wriitten by Brian and comments by LSA that are stimulating.

... and started doing some googling to reassure myself, which led me here.

Then my son came along and I stopped having time for the Internet except when I was sleeping at the same time :<)  About a year later I started following the board again and a year after that I made an account, because Someone Was Wrong On The Internet.

I started reading in 2004 right before the Michigan / Texas Rose Bowl. I can't really remember how I found the site. I thought it was funny how everyone tried to post the "first" comment on every new blog entry by Brian. Those were the days..

I used to frequent MaizenBrew.com and liked the writing.  I would visit here every now and then from about 2007 on (actuallyt made a different user name but never posted under it) then one day, and for the life I don't remember why, I posted something.  And nutjobs like myself responded with mostly postive comments about whatever the hell it was I said and i was then basically hooked.  And I absolute love Brian's writing (wish he would write a book) and looked forward to reading whatever it was he put on the front page.

Now its like an addiction.  I am probably on the site literally every hour if I'm at home and usually keep it open (although minimimized) at work.  And like the poster formally known as Profitgoblue said, I actually think of many, many people as my friends.

It really is a nice community of people when you step back for a minute and look at it.  And for whatever reason it's a community of knowledgable sports fans possessing a great sense of humor!

Couldn't stand mlive threads. And someone in the AA News before they were defunct praised mgoblog. Think it was the reporter who went to law school at Toledo . . . can't remember his name. Jim McCarthy? That can't be right.

A guy in my hall freshman year showed it to me. I read it throughout undergrad, but did not create an account and start posting until after I graduated. Likely because, no longer surrounded by Michigan fans, I needed someone who also cared about Michigan to share my thoughts with, as no one else cares about Michigan sports where i am now, and they were beginning to get annoyed with me constantly talking about Michigan.

As soon as RR was fired I was on google non stop looking for new coach rumors. Eventually leading me here thankfully! Never followed recruiting until stumbling upon this site.

Jim Carty would bring it up and quote and link articles. And most were far better than what Carty was writing. I didn't always agree with everything, but you really got the feel it was being written by a true FAN. So at slow times at work I would go back to the first page and read through all the posts to the present (that weren't UFRs or things that were not really exciting years after they had been written; sticking with game reaction and theory columns). Then I think Rick Leach went crazy and I finally decided to post rather than just read the board.

This guy named Brian Cook kept embedding my videos to some site called mgoblog.com. After several links, I looked around and decided to stay. I like that the majority of the people here are actually Michigan fans I can talk with. On rivals.com, I spent more time talking to opposing fans and that got old after a while. Posting on Mlive during the final years of the John Cooper era, we were bombarded by big mouth buckeye fans even though they had nothing to trash talk about.

It's nicer being here where you're among your own people.

I started when we went 3-9 and looked like the worst Michigan team I've ever seen. No bowl game for the first time in my life. I was looking for answers.. so I came here.

Through all my addictions there have been two constants: I like my stuff cheap and it must be high quality. Then I saw there were kittens and muppets too, and I was hooked.

Whatever one where you learn Catia, Solidworks, etc. Basically you're in front of a computer all day and I saw the whole row of guys in front of me one day on a website called mgoblog so I checked it out. Now I'm hooked

My brother came down to Dayton from grand rappids to vist for the hollidays and I was showing him my droid when he saw my Mlive UM football app and said, "what is this gay ass shit" I couldn't get the earmuffs on my step daughter fast enough. Anyway, he proceeded to show me Mgoblog on his i phone, and my family didn't see me the rest of the night. I was pissed at myself that I had been missing out on the best information out there on my Beloved wolverines and every day since I get yelled at atleast once by my wife to get off that damn blog and do the chores. Damn I love Mgoblog!

I started lurking about a couple years ago after stumbling onto the site.  The intelligent blog and board posts were like a drug to me.  I was able to put a huge boost to my Michigan football knowledge.  The recruiting information I received turned a non-descript day in February into a second Christmas and I now follow the recruiting trail as best as possible.

I went through a second fire academy with 80% buckeye fans, which just gave me more reason to hate them.  This was after I moved to Memphis, TN and a hate, second only to ohio, was born.  If I only had a dollar for every time I told someone "You can't root for a conference!"  or "Yea, but that SEC savior Tebow got that a$$ waxed by the team who lost to Appalachian State." or any other historical stat.  I have to work harder to follow Michigan ball but God bless this site for helping me do it.  I only hope I'm able to contribute some sort of intellect and humor

I discovered this site actually from reading a Piston site during their 2005 playoff run.  Someone there linked this site, where Brian had found these bizarre Japanese MSPaint-style pictures of Piston players .  (At that time he dabbled in pro sports on occasion.)  It was fascinating.  I got hooked.

EDIT: this is the post that drew me in:
