How did you become a Michigan fan?

Always interesting to hear from fellow board members how they became to be fans of the Maize and Blue. Also, it is quite unifying to see that you are no less of a Wolverine if you did not attend U of M. Those blessed to attend Michigan certainly have a "fuller / more robust" experience by attending Michigan, but by no means does this create aristocratic levels of fandom. We all love the school we root for...so what led you to root and cherish Michigan? For me it is kinda a mystery. I was born in Grand Rapids and also lived in Milford. My Father was in infusion pump sales and management and we moved from Michigan half way through my 3rd grade year at Johnson Elementary (Milford). Moved to UT, CA, and FL for high school through college. My parents were not Michigan alumns (Dad a Bearcat) nor were they Michigan fans. I guess I became a fan because it "connected" me to the state of my birth and supplied me with a pride. I never considered Michigan as an option for college. I wanted a small Liberal Arts experience. But I spent my Saturday's in the Fall arriving early in the lobby of my dorm to make sure I could get dibs on the TV to turn on my Maize and Blue.

My mom moved us to east Detroit to live with my aunt and cousins to recover from eviction in Ohio. When Christmas came, my aunt bought me a Detroit Lions tee-shirt and my two-years-older brother a Michigan Wolverines tee-shirt. I saw "Wolverines" and thought "Logan," who was my favorite X-Man, so I cried until my brother traded shirts with me. I realized it was a football shirt, so I asked my aunt what the Michigan Wolverines were. She told me I would get big enough and play football there one day, and I was hooked. I was six. That maize and blue stuck...

I don't remember a time when I wasn't a Michigan fan. I suppose, like many others, I was born into it. I still have a hard time finding the point where my father stops and Bo begins. My aunt received a degree from Michigan. Both my mother and father would have happily attended were it not for circumstances getting in the way. And in retrospect, I don't know where else I would have gone to college. The moment that envelope arrived in the mail, there was no decision to be made. My cousin was a part of Steve Kornacki's "Block M" OL group but my fandom was established long before.

In short, I never knew there was an option.

Well I guess I was always destined to be a fan. My mom always tells me stories of when we lived in Germany(dad was in the army) when I was a little and Me and my dad would stay up all hours of the night to watch the games because of the time difference. Been a fan ever since.

while my Dad was finishing up grad school at ohio st. I grew up in mid-Ohio. The first college football game that I remember was when my older neighbor invited me to watch the osu-Michigan game in 1977 (yes, my 20 plus years of living in Ohio still force me to say osu first). I'm pretty sure he expected me to fall in line and just root for ohio st, but, as my handle indicates I was immediately taken by Harlan Huckleby (along with Woolfolk and Leach), and of course the unis and the fight song. And, I have to admit the allure of being a contrarian to my older friend was a powerful elixir. By the time the Wolverines had won the game, my friend had vowed to never invite me over again (he relented, but I never did go over for another football game, of any type), and I was on my way to being "that Michigan fan" for the remainder of junior high, high school, and even among my good college friends in Ohio. Of course all my family: parents, aunts, uncles, cousins were buckey fans. But, I'm proud to say I converted my Brother early on just by having UM gear laying around the house, because I was long gone while he was growing up, and now he's left in Ohio carrying the torch, which has been no easy task the last decade. Hail to the Victors!

was a Michigan fan and got me interested in 1970, then I turned into  a true fan way before I went to school there. My Dad was a ND fan.
