How Coaches Voted in USA Today Poll

Submitted by los on

A few interesting things. Les Miles gave Michigan a lot of love (had us at #8). Coach Hoke had as at 11 and Sparty at 13 while Dantonio had Sparty at 12 and Michigan at 13. Coaches were almost unanimous in voting Alabama 2nd.

edit: Looking at it again there were more Okla St votes than I thought, mostly from the smaller schools.

I don't have posting privileges so I can start a thread of my own on this (not there really even needs to be another "how the coaches voted" thread), but the Freep ran a story today under the headline of Rocky Long showing no love to Michigan. So naturally, I clicked on it, assuming that the most basic journalistic skills would at least lead the authors to seek some comment on the poll from Long, SDSU, or Hoke. But no - there's no original information in the article, no quote from Long, no suggestion that they attempted to solicit a quote and were rebuffed, and not even any speculation as to why he rated his former boss's team so poorly. I realize this sentiment is not new on these boards, but the Freep just fucking sucks.

Thoughts on Dantonio ranking us at 13? Given all the buzz leading up to the final week had to know that ranking us >=14 would equal a Sugar Bowl bid.

I think that as much as these coaches try to help there own teams out (and they do, just check out Bielema's) they're pretty good about not screwing another team completely due to rivalries or jockeying position for the bowl games (which is nice to see). They tend to pump up their teams but not drop competitors. It might also be due to the fact that the higher they rank past opponents, the better it makes them look as well.

All this is made worse by the fact that Mike Gundy doesn't have a vote in the coaches poll. The entire coaches poll should be scrapped, there's too much potential self-interest involved (add in the bonuses many coaches receive for their final place in the BCS standings) and the poll includes and excludes coaches seemingly at random.

Man, I love Les Miles. I'm glad we have Hoke now, but I wish we'd taken him in 2007 and the administration wouldn't have let whatever happened in his personal life keep him from coaching here.

Man, I hate Les Miles. I'm glad we didn't take him in 2007 and I'm glad the the administration  let whatever happened in his personal life keep him from coaching here.

Furthermore, I respect his coaching ability. But the lucky breaks he's gotten can't be disputed...the poor clock management can't be disputed. What he is - a coach who has some very good assistant coaches and recruits his ASS off.

With that said, I don't like his "SEC-style" recruiting practices and seeing videos like this:
