How bad for the Michigan program would it be if RR went to Miami?

Submitted by A_Maize_Zing on

Just a quick reaction to Adam Rittenberg's article where he brings up RR as a possible canidate for the Miami job.

First what a great place for RR.  They have a talented team filled with luxuries like Seniors and Juniors.  He would be in a recruiting hot bed that he already recruits well.

Oh and the scary part is how many players would go with him?  How many of the Florida kids would like to return home? This team still seems loyal to Rich Rod and heaven forbid Denard may want to stay in a RR spread offense.  Seems like a natural fit.

The good news is by waiting DB forces RR to miss that opportunity...unless he sees the writing on the wall and resigns.

God I hope RR is back next year.

Do you really think that Miami would hire RR at this point?  I just can't imagine him getting a high profile job immediately after the Michigan experience (losing seasons, probation, hammered in local and national media....).

I'm sure that he'll land on his feet at some point but it would be pretty risky for a high profile school to take that chance right now.  It's like the hot girl with the cold sore......at least wait 'til it clears up.

Someone mentioned Clemson earlier in this thread....I think that might be his ceiling at this point (but that job's not open....yet).

THUG U wants to return to its values. It wants to win on the field and not have their players win in the classroom. RR would fit in just fine with the misfits he loves to recruit. I'm sure Demar is hoping RR goes to Miami so he would qualify.

How am I a bigot? Coz I expect a higher standard of players to put on the winged helmet? This is Michigan. If we want to hold this institution to a high regard, than we need to do the same with the athletes we bring in.

I'm sure the majority of the players on the team are wonderful kids who want to do nothing but work hard and success on the field and in the classroom. But I am not the first person to question some of the kids RR has recruited. And juding by the statement the Miami AD made about how great Randy Shannon was as an individual because he made sure his athletes did well in school and graduated, but fired him anyones makes one assume that Miami doesn't hold itself to level that Michigan does. I know they haven't been elite, they haven't won the ACC, but it's about more than that. It's about setting up these kids for success and to have a bright future just like Harbaugh said. It's hard to do this when you recruit kids who don't meet our minimum qualification or are denied admissions by the university. There are plenty of star athletes that would meet our academic qualifications that we can go after.

I cheer and I support wholehearted the players who play for us. But just because I do doesn't mean I think their coach is the right person for the job. RR seems like a fine individual. I signed up for the organ donation when he was promoting it (though I was already previously registered as an organ donor). But he is not leading this team, the flagship of Michigan athletes, with the integrity and honor that Lloyd Carr spoke of during his retirement speech by recruiting kids Bo and Lloyd wouldn't touch because they aren't Michigan Men.

If you have no tolerance for my differing opinions about where RR would be a good fit, Michigan or Miami, then you would actually be the bigot. Could I have choosen my words differently? Perhaps. But it doesn't change my overall sentiment.

So I hope you can take a moment and take back your statement as it is unfounded and completely untrue, especially when you take into account that I am an Asian Buddhist who has previously worked in medical clinics in Ethiopia, Nepal, and Thailand. I also taught creative writing courses at a correctional facility as a form of community outreach.

Instead, let's ask you to hold yourself to the same standard of reference that you use in your reply: back up your, to my eyes, at least, unfounded and completely untrue claims against the current Michigan program.

Where is the evidence that Rodriguez doesn't care about success in the classroom? How about any clear data that point to poor graduation rates.  Any thoughts on the supposedly deficient character of the players?

From what I have heard, Rodriguez rather strongly emphasizes academics, and recruits young men of modesty and strong work ethic. Unless you see something to the contrary, aside from some kind of private opinion based on random moments of who-knows-what, please wait until there is an indication that your assertions actually hold up under objective scrutiny.

Some of your issues are non-items, e.g. graduation rates: he hasn't even been here long enough to compile a record in that area yet.

He did not call you a bigot. Misfits he loves to recruit? Can you say sweeping generalization? Look in the mirror and say "I am an asshole", regardless of race, creed, or national origin. And shove your Michigan Men crap where the sun doesn't shine.

"It's about setting up these kids for success and to have a bright future..."

Yeah, a degree from Michigan is like an anvil around their necks. GTFO

I like to avoid the personal attacks, but for you I'll make an exception. You are a bigot and a fucking asshole in general. Where are all these "thugs" that RR has recruited? When I look at the UM roster I see a bunch of upstanding kids who have great attitudes. And if you think previous Michigan coaches didn't take on kids with questionable pasts, you haven't been paying attention.

that the media in Michigan lacks the integrity possessed by the Fl papers and ask their help in explaining the witch hunt that became the stretching debacle to the fans, and solicit their help in welcoming RR back to the South. I would do this at a nice location and put on a lavish spread for the good folks in the media. I would further explain how all the negative attention  by the local media cost RR dearly when it came time to recruit. I would dig up every reference to his background, culture, accent and last name I could find and present that along with my twisted version of what happens to young men from FL when the Northern media takes a dislike to them. I'd reference every single negative comment about Lloyd Carr and invite the media to go ask Henne and Long how much they hated Carr.

Edit: I'd toss in a few blog posts from folks like TheWolverineWay to help prove my point.

Oh, and I could probably save a few bux on the first contract. Thanks Michigan!

Y'all use a funny yardstick to measure these things.

Rrod's brand has really taken a hit.  I doubt Miami would consider him.  It seems that most fired coaches have to sit a year or two before landing a new gig.  Rrod will be a head coach again, and I think he will do well, but I doubt it will be Miami given the timing and the prestige of the job.  I do see him landing in the Big East or the ACC and he will do well if he ditches his attachment to the 3-3-5.

I really couldn't see Rich Rod sitting out two years. He is very highly respected in college football amongst his peers and has a very strong resume. Why would other schools hold it against him that Michigan had unrealistic expctations during a rebuilding phase? Teams will be lined up to have him as a football coach if he is fired here, just wait and see.

Since RR is a failure with defense and special teams how can he be effective in any major conference?  He is a classic example of the Peter Principle who has been promoted beyond his abilities.

Let's be honest - the national perception is that RR has failed at Michigan.  If Miami were to go ahead and hire him, it'd say more about them than us.  People would argue that this would just make the transition to Harbaugh a little smoother.

I think the unspoken question is whether it would dry up the Florida pipeline, whether certain current players from Florida would be more likely to transfer, whether said transfers would result in both astonishing year 2 results in Coral Gables while also hamstringing Hypothetical UM Coach in his early years and whether this would make UM's program and fans look bad (it would) for years to come. I think that's the question. But I'm sure you're of the opinion that none of these things would happen so hey smooth transition. Everything will be awesome.

...does Denard want to lose a year, especially if Michigan does decide to run a spread offense (for all this talk about Harbaugh running power football, he really doesn't, and uses Andrew Luck in spread-like situation during games...though Harbaugh'd be only one possibility).

Richard Ash would be a possibility.  Ricardo Miller I'm not sure on.  Dallas Crawford would be a *strong* possiblity (if not probabiliy).  Vincent Smith is someone we, hate to say it, could probably afford to lose.  Demitrius Hart I'm not sure on, and might depend on what Denard does.  Though the truth of the matter is that we just don't know.

Before Rich got here. It would just completely dry up. Even it that were the case (it's not), how many "great" players have we gotten from Florida, other than Denard? Serviceable players, maybe even good players....but how many that are so much better than players from other states?  And who's to say a new coach doesn't open up recruiting connections in say, California (where USC is now down), or Ohio, or Texas, or some other hotbed? Michigan has gotten really good players in the past from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Louisiana, California, and yes, Florida.  As well as other states.  To think Rich is to Florida as Nixon was to China has never been the case before, so there's no reason to think it will be in the future.

Not sure why you got negged for this.  It seems like an honest evaluation.  RR was on a lot of Top 10 Coaches lists when he was at WVU.  The same thing wouldn't be said three years later.  It's pretty simple.

If Miami really wanted him, they could come after him.  They don't....so they won't.
