How are you coping?

Submitted by maizemama on

So, I'm not really a big drinker, so I can't cope with my feelings of sadness and disappointment (some might say ennui) as others do; the board is also very full of sadness and we need some fun. In my house last night we were binging on Halloween candy and pouring hot fudge sauce on normally healthy snacks. This is going to be a rough season on the waist line. I hate you! But I can't quit you!

After yesterday's game, I thought, "Man, I wanna kill somebody (something)!" So, I did just that. Went out last night and killed an alligator (legally, of course). However, just like our beloved Wolverines, something was bound to go wrong. When my buddy bang sticked (not sure that's really a word outside of the swamp) the gator, his head came out of the water sending bone and bullet fragments everywhere on impact. Some of them, unfortunately found their way into my friends eye. After a trip to the ED and a visit from the on call ophthalmologist , he'll be fine with some antibiotics and a protective lens. Even our victories somehow feel like near losses.

I am coping through acceptance.  I now watch the games void of emotion.  It sucks but at the same time it is much better than my blood pressure going through the roof!

I am accepting the fact that our collect hubris has been squashed and looking forward to a real coach, who provides a tactical advantage, and our return to 'Michigan Football'.

Seriously, it will be alright.

and so there's really no need to cope.

Yet it's surreal.  So maybe there is a Short Term and a Long Term Grief Cycle going on.  I'm in the Acceptance phase of the Short Term cycle but in the disbelief phase of the Long Term cycle.

Who had any inkling that we would be this bad?  That Notre Dame's victory over us would soon be revealed to be a gimme instead of a statement win?

I grew up in Michigan too, but I've been here for years. One thing I didn't know before coming down was that gators are no longer an endangered species... since 1987! There are well over a million in Florida, so we can hunt them. Licenses are given by lottery in 3 phases. Season then goes from August to November, but you can only hunt where your permit location is (2 tags per permit) and only during the time period given, like 8/15-9/3. If you are awarded a permit, you don't need another license. If you missed out on the 2 lottery phases and the phase 3 (first come period) then you have to have a alligator trapping agent license. That allows you to hunt so long as you are with a permit holder.
We do eat them, but usually we sell them. The processors pay by the foot ($20/ft for a 7 footer, $35/foot for a 10 footer) and they usually wait at the hunting areas overnight to put the gators right in their refrigerated trucks.
I realize that this is way more than anyone wants to know, but I think it's s pretty fascinating thing. Definitely has an added level of difficulty than deer hunting. Edit: This was a reply to Mabel Pines. App placed it at the bottom.

Heavy drinking and wallowing in self pity over my footbeal teams.  In addition to M, I'm a Bears fan and I was disappointed that Aaron Rodgers didn't have the decency to atleast buy the Bears defense dinner before bending them over.

from deer that dear daughter shot last sunday.   and the kids playing football in the hay field at sunset.  and barn chores.  gave the 3 youngest boys haircuts last night, in prep for church this a.m.   and the list could go on quite long just like all of you.

all of that to say, we all love michigan, michigan football, and this blog, but the bottom line is that the things of life and daily living far eclipse football in importance.   go blue, enjoy the mgoblog community, but excel at being the best spouse, parent, sibling, grandchild, etc. that you can be and you will only smile at football, and turn it off when we stink.  like right now.

terrible but once we suck in a game and im done with believing in a coach i silently cheer negative plays as much as positive. I chuckle a little to hide my depression and enjoy the deer in headlights look from Hoke, before him Rodriguez.

My 6 year old son has epidermolysis bullosa. He is infected and headed to the hospital in the morning for what will be his 8th admission in the past year. We are in an end of life pattern. This makes college football less important. Dwelling on the mess in the athletic department is a welcome distraction.

I cope the same way I've coped with being a Lions fan all these years. I focus on something else. Fortunately, the Tigers will be in the playoffs, the Wings will be starting up, the Lions are playing some good ball, and Michigan basketball season is coming.

I just can't take M football seriously when it's this bad. It's very sad that I feel now about Michigan as I have about the Lions for many years. If something good happens, that's great, but if bad games happen, it's just the expectation.

Thanks Hoke and Brandon (and let's not forget RR and Bill Martin) for producing a historically bad product. Michigan football has gone from the leaders and best to a punchline. And given what happened Saturday, the joke isn't even that funny.
