Housing Help

Submitted by KansasBlue on

Hey MGO community, I have a request.  As my name suggests, I live in Kansas these days, but my extended family is still in the area.  I have an uncle who is in pretty bad shape financially and finds himself in need of either a very inexpensive apartment, or even just a room that someone would rent out of their home, preferrably in the Ypsi/ Ann Arbor area.  Where would we be able to go to help him find something?  I've looked at rent.com and apartment.com, but that's about it.  I've never needed to rent something for myself, so I'm pretty lost.  Thanks for any help you can offer!

Edit:  Thanks everybody!  This will give us a few places to start looking.  Go blue:)

It has a bad reputation among a lot of people (and for somewhat good reason I guess). But literally every item I've ever put on Craigslist (used car, smartphone, furniture, tickets) has sold, and sold quickly. Usually with multiple people contacting me within hours of posting. Outside of speciality items, Craigslist is the first place I go to buy/sell/rent pretty much anything.

I've sold a car, furniture and electronics as well as advertised free stuff.

To avoid problems........never allow anyone to visit your residence without full identification:  name, email address and phone number.  Then Google that person.

The people that contacted me through Craigslist have been very nice.

You can tell the phony shit.......no identification, object to your request for same.  Just blow them off.

For a housing search, that is. He'd do his searc by Craigslist and old school classifieds. Student housing is a different matter, but if your uncle is in bad straits, he'll do better looking in Ypsilanti or Ypsi Twp than A2 - and still have access to decent public transportation. So pretty much what you'd do in Topeka, Lawrence etc.

Apts off Stone School...

Years ago I lived in townhouses off Stone School called Mill Creek. They offered housing assistance for low income. Not knowing your budget it could be an option. And there are a number of places that do offer assistance. The key is asking the rental group.

A lot of towns/cities have local trading groups on Facebook. It's been a growing trend and there are always good resources in them. Sometimes people post apartments or rooms for rent. Often people post ISO and opportunities come out of the woodwork. I'd say people are on those groups way more often then on listing services because they see that in their feed on a daily basis. Might want to start there. Search Ann Arbor buy, sell trade or classifieds

if so, I can get the ball rolling with calls to veterans organizations. Let me know if such is the case and if it is I'll be happy to send you one of my selfdom used email accounts in order to assist him. I live on the west side of the state but I'd be happy to help out a fellow vet. it's what we're supposed to do.

If you need a Plan B, southwestern Wayne County is cheaper than even Ypsilanti in some cases but still with plenty of decent accomodations - so, around Belleville, maybe some in the southern end of Canton, Romulus, etc... The knock is that if regional transit is needed, it is going to depend on where you are going how effective it is going to be, although the SMART system does connect to AATA in a few locations now.

I am a little late to the post, but I currently live in Ann Arbor and I share a house. We currently have the basement unoccupied and the basement can be rented out cheaply. We usually ask for $425 a month plus utilities. Let me know if this interest you and we can work out logistics.
