HORRIBLE Rule Change Proposal

Submitted by maizenblue92 on
The NCAA is proposing a rule change that would take away touchdowns if a taunting penalty is assessed. The penalty will be assessed from the spot of the foul if its before the goal line (if in endzone it will be on PAT). Other rules changes are in the aritcle. Feel free to comment all rule changes. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/football/ncaa/02/12/rule.changes…

even with a goal line interpection going back the other way you've got maybe 15 seconds to see the INT develop, get out of your seat, onto the field, take the proper angle and THEN tackle a guy twice your size with a full head of steam and full padding. however, taking into account the suspension of disbelief, I'd love to see this happen.

Egregiously unfair acts to prevent a sure score (such as outside interference) can be penalized by awarding the score. One of the refs from the "Band Is On The Field" play said in an interview that before the back judge informed him that the player actually reached the end zone, he was considering exactly that.

One rule change that I've come to the conclusion that I REALLY want to see is an unsportsmanlike conduct call when the receiver instantly jumps up and motions for a PI call on EVERY FREAKIN' INCOMPLETE PASS. For some reason that one just drive me nuts.

I'm not in favor of the taunting rule, but it's really not much different than taking away a TD (on an interception)for roughing the QB.

Maybe part of it is because I watched The U and got a kick out of Thug U's antics, but a big part has to do with incidents like this and this. The first one was "by the rules" while the 2nd call is so egregiously wrong it's not even funny. I say stop the bullshit and save the calls for only the most egregious acts of unsportsmanlike conduct, if at all. Officiating at the college level has been horrible. Let the officials worry about the rules that actually impact on-field play (holding, PI, legal formation) instead of arbitrary calls about whether a player called attention to himself or did something that hurt the other team's feelings. I say scrap all excessive celebration penalties. The NCAA likes to think that its players are robots, yet another case of it forgetting that the athletes are in fact human.

I love taunting. It makes the game more fun. By taking it away, just like the No Fun League has done, you lose some of the passion involved. I get a huge kick out of all celebrations wether they make me hate the other team more, or just laugh at the 350 lb nose tackle going all willy nilly after a sack. I love the celebrations mostly for the entertainment and humor of some involved. Most people who dont like it wont say a thing if a player on their favorite team does it.

For everyone against taunting, how many of us talk trash in backyard football/basketball with our friends? I know I do, and my friends do it to me. I think the notion of football players from opposing teams as mortal enemies is outmoded. A Michigan player can probably identify better and has more in common with an Ohio State player than they do with Michigan fans. Often times, players will be talking trash and the opposing player just laughs and pats him on the helmet. Just a thought before we call the kettle black.

Taunting escalates into fighting, then you have to watch the rest of the game without some of the best players. I'm totally fine with some jawing and jubilation, but if taunting isn't punished properly, you are dealing with altercations after every single play. This is football, players should be thrilled that they have the opportunity to communicate with violence.

Those breath-rite strips do nothing either. People keep wearing them. A better idea on the taunting -- stop showing them on TV. When a guy scores or makes a big play, cut to the fans and the cheerleaders and the band. Or hell, just put up a picture of a hot girl in a bikini and underneath, flash "TOUCHDOWN!" Just don't show the player acting like an idiot. Kids do it for the attention. Stop feeding the beast.

I don't always like the officials calling "excessive celebration", but I believe taunting has no place in football. There is a major difference. As long as I can remember going to UM games (since the mid 70's), when a Michigan player makes a big play he looks for the closest TEAMMATE to celebrate with. Bo would yank any running back or wide receiver who scored a TD and didn't find a teammate (read O-Lineman) to celebrate with. When a player believes that he needs to celebrate by talking trash to the opponenet he IS showing a lack of class. I like the rule.

I'm not losing sleep over any of these rules, and most of them seem like good ideas. For trash talking to get flagged, it usually has to be pretty blatant, and I don't have much sympathy for people who feel the need to do that. I wouldn't want players on my team to be able to taunt opponents, there's just nothing good about it.

you sound like the coach of the Hawks from the original Mighty Ducks film - "Its not worth playing if you don't win" and, of course, "Its not worth winning if you don't win big."

I don't care about hurting others feelings, but the real argument on why taunting should be penalized is that we should be discouraging any behavior that would be considered inappropriate in the work place. And no, it is not entertaining to see a guy make a complete ass of himself because he made a play in a football game that he could have not done if his teammates hadn't been doing their part. I really miss the days when people didn't feel the need to glorify themselves for doing what they are supposed to do.

Capri Pants and Pink Eyes are the wave of the future.... Taunting will migrate to the "I will Survive" Line Dance at the end of The Replacements; Gloria Gaynor can cause that, when coupled with Capri Football Pants, wedgie bans, and Pink eyes.....
