Hope for Pahokee: Kickstarter

Submitted by CRex on

Odoms is seeking to raise 35k for winter gardens in Pahokee, Florida.  He has a short video up on the Kickstarter page, but you don't care to watch that the short version is:

Pahokee, Florida, the hometown of Odoms, Smith, Ash, and Hawthorne, is a former agriculturual hub that has suffered declone recently.  The violent crime rate is over twice the national average and there is a lot of urban blight.  The poverty level of course has risen as business have left.  Odoms is seeking to create urban gardens in Pahokee to provide food to families and since urban green space has been shown to lower crime (neglected lots tend to attract additional vandalism, whereas a well tended lot doesn't).  Odoms actually started the charity based on a class project at Michigan.  He's been working with other urban gardening experts in Miami and is seeking to push out a larger project this year based on the success they had last year with a smaller pilot project.

You can pledge by clicking here.  There are various levels of swag that you get for your pledge or you can just drop some cash off and not ask for anything in return.  By the way, Odoms turned down the blog's offer to be given the profits of the MGoStore's eating shirt, so this is pretty much his revenue stream for the year.

You will not be billed unless 35k is raised, at point sometime post Sept 26 you'll see your credit card billed by Kickstarter.   If you bought a reward you will be sent an email at that time asking about the color/size/etc of the clothing.  So if you register with Kickstarter via some email you never check, you need to check it and respond to the survey post Sept 26 or you won't get your reward.

Yes I know that we threads on this midweek and yesterday, but they are off on the front page and I wanted to see if we can get a second wave of donations as people check in for post Air Force content.  The Kickstarter has been stalled in the 8k range for awhile now.

I finally contributed.  I love Tay Odoms, he was kind enough to include a letter to my nephew encouraging him after being in a bad accident.  I had ordered him the original #EATING shirt to celebrate getting his jaw unwired.

I'm going to work on my UM friends who are not members of the Blog; This cause is such a great idea and Odoms came up with some awesome designs for these things!

Just threw $100 Odoms' way.  Can't wait to wear those shorts with pride.  They look nice.  Very glad I could help a former UM player out.  He gave us many moments of joy in his career here.  I hope we can all pitch in and help Tay reach his goal.  GO BLUE!

It's inched above $10K, but getting another $25K seems difficult.  Maybe email the athletic department about this?  Perhaps they could include something about it in their weekly email newsletter.

Perhaps if the info can get to some local outlets like WTKA and annarbor.com, a post on the frontpage of the blog and somehow to espn.com.

only need 1,000 more people to pledge 25, it's doable

I would like to say that I'm do proud to be a graduate of the university of Michigan. I would like to take this time to thank all of the fans for the amazing support you have given me over the past four years. I also would like to thank everyone for the continued support shown off the field  for hope for pahokee and #eating. It has not been all about giving money but all of the time and support has meant more to me then any of you understand. Again I cannot thank you all enough.

Martavious Odoms, Tae Odoms,Tae or odoms  whatever you may call me thanks.
