Hope For Pahokee Kickstarter (Odoms - #eating)

Odoms has started a kickstarter to try and get money for a garden in Pahokee Florida. They've gone well beyond just the #EATING shirts and have all sorts of new stuff that you can get for donating. There's a video in it of Odoms himself talking about the project. I tried to embed but the code isn't working.

It must have just started today because they have $0 donated. But if you wish to donate some money and get a T-shirt, or laser tag with Odoms?, then you can donate some money. They have a pretty big goal of $35,000. Just thought I'd share since it's a project for a former, and loved, Michigan player.

Although I'm sure MGoBlog could probably fund this thing on our own, I hope the big hitters of Michigan football are made aware of this.  Odoms didn't play with too many NFLers, but there are a lot of M guys in the league with a lot of school spirit.  This link should be forwarded to Woodley, Harris, Braylon, Henne, Long and that crew.  Obviously each of them could drop 35k without blinking, but even if they each gave a thousand or two, it would get to the goal in a hurry.

Also - what about the UM administration and coaching staff?  Hoke, Mattison and Borges could give a good chunk no problem, and it wouldn't hurt future recruiting in Pahokee either.  Same with DB, hello.  If Bama can give money to Dr. Phillips high school, then Michigan can give money to help rebuild Pahokee.

This gives me another idea.  Name the Plant/garden plot - contact Al Golden, Will Muschamp, Jimbo Fisher, Mark Richt, and anyone else who recruits south Florida, and have them name a plot "Hurricane Football" or "University of Florida" to show the community they're supporting them.  Talk about recruiting money well spent.  As much as I'd like this to be a Michigan thing,  I'd much rather it be a wildly successful thing.

That got me thinking, as a general point:

I'd hope that the heavy hitters would just mail a check directly.  Kickstarter takes a cut of the action.  So its good for donating in reasonable amounts and aggregating smaller donations, but if you want to drop a large check on Odoms, mail that sucker directly so Kickstarter doesn't skim off the top.  Just a general thought in case anyone is reaching for the big boy checkbook.

That's a good point. I would hope those guys know better than to drop big numbers over kickstarter, but making decently large donations to make sure Tae reaches his goal would sure be helpful.

I've been following the blog for awhile now. Haven't felt that I had a good enough reason to post until now. A Michigan Man with a good cause got me off the sidelines. Cool hoody too (rising Michigan).

Pahokee isn't just the home of Odoms, but also current seniors Vince Smith and Brandin Hawthorne, As well as RS sophomore Richard Ash. Given the enjoyment they've helped to give us as fans watching them play, it's only right to give a little to help their hometown. Hopefully people step up like they did for Brians magazine - I see Brian already donated to Tay.

... Do the right thing and choose to give the T to a local who needs it... I hope it inspires a new generation of pahokee Michigan men with Odom's character.

OK - this has been up for 24 hours now, and they're 22% of the way to their goal.  We need to step it up.  Email the kickstarter link to all of the Michigan fans or people with a giving heart that you know.  There are thousads of readers of this blog alone, and only 200 backers so far (some of whom, presumable, are unaffiliated with the blog).

Let's go people!

I'm giving this thread a bump so it doesn't disappear from page one of the message board.  I linked this on the Maize and Brew board as well.  Raising $8K in one day is pretty impressive, but I hope it doesn't lose momentum.

This was posted last night on the Kickstarter page:

If you want more than one reward, email us through kickstarter that you want a combination of items and list which items you want and update your previous pledge to the new total.
EDIT: Currently at $8351. Come on, folks, there is no reason this shouldn't get funded by the end of the weekend! Do they still do scoreboard messages at football games? That would be the perfect opportunity.

I saw in the blog portion of the Hope for Pahokee website that someone from this blog contacted Tae about, I am assuming, using the mgoblogstore.

Tae turned it down though, but hopefully Brian will still post something about it on the main page to help.

I would like to say that I'm do proud to be a graduate of the university of Michigan. I would like to take this time to thank all of the fans for the amazing support you have given me over the past four years. I also would like to thank everyone for the continued support shown off the field  for hope for pahokee and #eating. It has not been all about giving money but all of the time and support has meant more to me then any of you understand. Again I cannot thank you all enough.

Martavious Odoms, Tae Odoms,Tae or odoms  whatever you may call me thanks.

I miss my #9 jersey and having on my wing helmet already.

Just tried reading the whole thread.. I'm home sick with the flu but where do I donate.. I read the article when you were a freshman/sophomore about your home town.. You are a true example to these young people that if you put your head down and push forward success will follow.. Now where do I donate?
