Hope for Pahokee #EATING Update

Submitted by reshp1 on

For the many of you who supported Hope for Pahokee and their community gardens project, I just got an update email that I thought I'd share to break up the CC stuff.

Hello everyone!

I am writing to you with the great news that we sold our first crop!  It is starfruit and passion fruit.  This is amazing and we wanted to write to say thank you and share some more pictures.  Our garden is going strong and the orchard and native plants are growing BIG.  We are still doing our Juvenile Justice program and I spent a week down in Florida over thanksgiving.  The kids in the program doing their hours in the garden seem to be liking it and are excited to come work, which you have to keep that between us because they might not keep it with their image. We had a work day with the community and everyone is in bright spirits.  It has been a long road and we couldn't have done it with out the support from our MICHIGAN family.

You may not know what it means to people to see all this happen.  It means a lot to us and I am proud to be able to give back to my community.  We have more gardens in the works up in Michigan and we are looking at Flint and Ann Arbor as well as Detroit.  We started #EATING to help all athletes and we will keep working to put as many gardens as we can.  You can continue to support us if you want to volunteer your time to help us get organized or you can share our new crowd funding campaign on your social media (which is at teameating.com ) and let everyone know that they also can show their support and get a really cool shirt.  Lets make #EATING as big as we can because we really believe in what we are doing just by the big impact in my little town to how we can change everything for players and communities across the nation.

Impressive size on the starfruit trees!  I guess what they say about the muck soil in Pahokee is true.  Nice to see the reception TeamEating is getting from the community.

Looks really impressive, I want to go down and help garden now, love seeing some Michigan Men contributing to their community, this is where the real coaching success comes out

Really cool.  Hopefully we can keep our pipeline to Pahokee open.  Here we have a legitimate Michigan Difference talking point.  Many schools have recruited players from the Muck, but how many inspired their guys to come back and make a difference in the community?

The fruit looks divine, but you better make sure your kidneys are A1 before you eat that Star fruit or it can very well be your last time... Well.. Let's just say the star fruit looking divine is definitely a matter of opinion.

Like a few have already said, we can debate the parameters of "Michigan Man" all day, but I am certain you're looking at the fantastic work of a couple of them right here. With the ubran farming movement on an apparent uptick in Detroit, it would be great to see this effort expand as they mention might happen. Definitely honored to support something like this.

I know everyone's excited about the star fruit but passion fruit is one of my faves - great job guys! My son and his friend went paintballing with you guys up in Michigan, and I've been keeping up ever since. It's great to see this all develop.

Thanks so much for the update! I wonder if #EATING has been featured in the alumni association magazine yet? Just another way to garner support for the cause.
