Hope for Pahokee #Eating Kickstarter Nightly Update - 9 days left to make a difference

Submitted by meechigan on

Just a night reminder of Martavious Odoms' kickstarter campaign to bring urban gardens to Pahokee.  Donations have been super slow today so hopefully a few people can add a few more dollars today.

9 days left and $8203 to go

Donate if you can.

I noticed that the average donation on the kickstarter ($$$/number of backers) is pretty high. Translation: most people give a lot. I bet there's a lot of students out there who read MGoBlog but don't give to the kickstarter, and that needs to change.

I'm one of you. I'm a students myself, and my finances are as strained as anyone here. And I can't afford to donate much. So for a couple weeks, I just kind of ignored it and left it to Those Who Have Money to fund the project. But I've realized that it's not just about the money or the swag. It's about getting involved in something worth supporting. Listen, I didn't give much, because I don't have much. But for less than what it would cost to get tipsy at Rick's, I could support a project that really makes a difference in a community that really needs it.

So students: GIVE. Whatever you have, even if it's just the postcard option. I personally like the beanie and am looking forward to getting it in the mail. $5, $10, $20... you'll do way more good with it if you give it away. We have no excuse.

I understand where you're coming from, but I disagree. Students don't make much money. But what we spend it on says a lot about our priorities. Take the Rick's example. Is getting plastered more important to us than helping out a community? Fact is, most students do have some discretionary funds, or we wouldn't see students at Blimpie Burger.

But upon further reflection, I think you've hit on something important. Everyone, no matter who he or she is, should give what they can. For people like me, that means 15 or 20 bucks. For the large number of very economically successful alumni, that might mean substantially more. But I do believe that everyone has a responsibility to contribute to the flourishing of others.

I'm serious when I say Congratulations. Your realization of how little it takes for an Individual to make a difference is paramount for our country to dig out of this funk we've been In for the past 6-8 years. I'm not going to get political here so let's just say that this country would be in a far better place if society as a whole made the breakthrough that you just did. It's about everyone doing a little, not a few doing a lot. Economics 101. Good post my friend.

What a great cause. I always liked Odoms for the way he approached the game, never once heard anything bad about him even though he was at Michigan in some hard times. So glad he ended his career the way he did, and even more important than football I think what he is doing with #EATING is a great cause. Thank you for the daily updates on this! I had yet to donate until tonight but seeing the MGoCommunity and everyone else back this drove me to donate and I am very glad i did. Go Blue, Go MGoCommunity, Go Odoms, and please anyone who can, DONATE!

I'll gladly guilt trip students... DONATE SOMETHING...

I have zero income at the moment, but somehow still spend money on booze every weekend...

Pregame with some Sailor Jerry's instead of racking up a $40 bar tab this friday, and you can easily donate $25...

Time to shake down all the remaining trees you have and see how many leaves you can knock to the ground.  I'll be sending out some emails myself today.

Done and done.

Fellow Michigan Fans, Martavius Odoms (you may remember him from such plays as the touchdown catch against OSU last year and during the Gator Bowl) is looking for donations to his charity, Hope for Pahokee, through kickstarter. The money will go towards building a community garden in his home town of Pahokee, which will provide both jobs and fresh produce to a community that needs it. For those of you unfamiliar with kickstarter, the projects must be fully funded for donors to be charged; it's all or nothing. As of writing he is ~$7,000 short of the goal of $35,000, with only 9 days to go. So open your wallets and help out a former Wolverine trying to give back to his hometown. Oh, and the rewards are pretty cool too!
