Hoops Open Thread vs. Indiana

Submitted by BlackEvanDown on
Thread for the basketball game today vs. Indiana. In the first 7 minutes, Douglass has a long three and Novak has two. Manny has been forcing it, and Indiana looks a little sloppy without Creek. M will have to force turnovers to win this game. Luckily, the crowd has been pretty quiet because most of the Indiana students are not back yet.

This team is just bad...They dont play like a team, they dont play defense, stupid fouls and they take horrible shots. No leadership and no intensity.

We finally get our role players to step up and then our stars don't get off the bus. I'm going to miss Manny, but honestly I may not miss DeShawn next year. Watching him get so little out of his ability (especially on D and on the glass) is beyond frustrating. We miss the leadership of Lee and Merrit. They were extremely vocal guys, encouraging and chastising their teammates when necessary. We don't see anyone doing that this year.

Here is how you lose a basketball game. On the drive by Waterford that ended up with a Novak rebound and a Stu three, Michigan offered no help on the baseline to Novak. Good result. Bad execution. On a fast break Stu Douglass appeared like he could have contested a pass to the post man but he backed off. Free lay up. On the three point play by Rivers, Rivers came off a screen and drove uncontested until he was in the lane. Michigan does not play good defense. And they aren't athletic enough to make up for the shortcomings. Unfortunately this season won't really get much better.

Go Nemitz/Taylor! Hopefully the two of them can dominate and softball can get things going in the right direction. Also, hopefully someone will get Sims pissed and going towards the basket.

Let me first start by saying that I hate bashing our own players, I was mad when the fans booed Chad Henne against Oregon and I hate when people tear down are own guys. But that performance, or lack there of by DeShawn today was unacceptable for anyone who represents Michigan. His lack of desire and effort on the glass and on the defensive end of the floor was disgusting. That has been the problem with our team all year. Sure other our shooters were cold at the beginning of the year but he has to be a stopper in the middle of the defense, regardless of what system we are playing, if we are gonna win any games this year. Sure he is averaging 16.1 ppg on offense and that is important. But in our big wins last year we got some stops on defense because he was rebounding and stopping players like Johnson from Purdue inside, forcing teams to shoot the ball from the outside. I have not seen every game this year, but I have seen many of them and he just does not seem to care about making a stop on the defensive end of the floor or rebounding the ball on the defensive end. The tough part about all of this is that we cant take him out of the game because even though Zach Gibson has been playing his heart out, hes not a threat on offense and not athletic enough to play the middle on defense. He is a senior this is his last go round and to me he has mentally checked out and hasnt been here all year. Regardless of your skill level, you can always play hard and give full effort. He needs to realize the opportunity that he has, many would kill for the chance to represent Michigan athletics. Sorry for the rant but I had to get this off my chest

I can handle Tommy Amaker hoops and such when the football team is winning 9-10 games a year and we are playing in a bowl on Jan 1 of some kind but between what I just watched and hockey I would cut out my eyes if I could afford voice recognition software for my computer.
