Holtz picks Kent St. to upset Penn St.
On Sportcenter tonight, after the N.C. St. / Cinci game, Holtz picked Kent St. as his "team to watch" this weekend.
That's crazy right? I mean picking Penn St. to lose to Kent St, come on?
But it's not just regular 'ol crazy, it's Lou Holtz Crazy.
Because.... Wait for it.... Lou Holtz is....
A Kent St. Alum.
So, we knew he'd never pick against South Carolina and N. D., but I guess now he's picking the Golden Flashes despite common sense too.
All respectability as an "expert" is lost (if not already lost).

Can you believe he played LB at KSU?
September 17th, 2010 at 12:05 AM ^
Judging from his current mental state I think he played "tackling dummy" at KSU.
September 17th, 2010 at 12:06 AM ^
....is clearly past his "best before" date.

each and every year. For the first year, though, I've noticed Corso is really struggling on camera. He's having a harder time finding the words he wants and making coherent thoughts. It's kind of sad to watch. I kind of like Corso. He's always been the funny one to Herbie's straight man.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:27 AM ^
and I wish him many, many happy returns. Is everybody getting older or is it just me?
September 17th, 2010 at 12:06 AM ^
Kent State is going to play Notre Dame and South Carolina in the BCS title game and they will end in the first ever 3-way tie. That will be Lou's preseason prediction next year. Book it.
September 17th, 2010 at 7:28 AM ^
Dr. Lou's preseason prediction for next season was going to be, "Oh! The Alzheimer's finally got me. Bury me under the 50 in South Bend!
A little macabre perhaps?
September 17th, 2010 at 12:09 AM ^
WOW I mean maybe this is why Mark May is such a douche, because he has to put up with this guy all the time. I mean can you imagine listening to this all the time. On air and off air. Has to be brutal.
September 17th, 2010 at 12:14 AM ^
OK who am i kidding Mark May gets no pass holtz or no holtz
September 17th, 2010 at 9:24 AM ^
Yeah. Maybe Dr. Lou took some bad acid at KSU back in the day. But May is 100% pure douche.

Lou holtz at Kent State
September 17th, 2010 at 12:29 AM ^
In Lou's younger days he looked like a cross between Sloth from the Goonies and Ollie from Hoosiers. That combo would make one heck of a player too- physical tools and hustle.
September 17th, 2010 at 7:54 AM ^
After reading this because I had the exact same thought about him looking like Sloth. Maybe that smirk on his face is because he is thinking about the Baby Ruth the photographer promised him if he smiled for the team picture.
September 17th, 2010 at 7:31 PM ^
Wherever it's from, +1
September 17th, 2010 at 12:20 AM ^
If anyone actually listened to him I hope he would be fired by now.
September 17th, 2010 at 12:22 AM ^
I was unaware that people could actually understand him.
September 17th, 2010 at 12:29 AM ^
Or given a towel to wipe the spit from his face.
September 17th, 2010 at 1:33 AM ^
people can't understand him when they actually listen to him. All they can hear is "mumble mumble ND!!!! mumble mumble mumble", at the same time spitting out when he open up his mouth.
September 17th, 2010 at 12:25 AM ^
You know, I'm always afraid when he does something like this because I'm scared that, one day, he's actually going to get one right and we'll NEVER hear the end of it from him. In return, the team on the business end of the upset cannon will never hear the end of it from the rest of the country.

best.impression.ever.
September 17th, 2010 at 1:05 AM ^
Give him one thing, he knows upsets. Heck, he's been upsetting the grim reaper for about 15 years now.
September 17th, 2010 at 1:07 AM ^
It's not THAT crazy of a pick... the way Penn State has been playing, who knows? I'm not saying I would be picking KSU, but it's possible that they could win if the O line sucks like it has and Bolden doesn't play well. But I'm not disagreeing with the argument that Lou is a homer, because he is. That video posted earlier this week of the kid making fun of him on the radio him was phenomenal
September 17th, 2010 at 1:21 AM ^
The man eats soft foods, poops his pants and always seems a solid 2.5 sheets to the wind. Not saying cut him a break, but should anyone take him seriously? He reminds me of Marshall Applewhite these days.
September 17th, 2010 at 1:48 AM ^
He's very biased. I mean Bob Ufer was under scrutiny for his love of Michigan, but come on. Really? Penn State's got a young quarterback. Cool. They're still a pretty solid team and should have no problem beating PSU. GO BIG TEN! ND is going to be undefeated this season too, right? Wait... Have they already lost a game? My bad.
September 17th, 2010 at 2:20 AM ^
Whenever Holtz is given camera time to himself, it is always awesome. Remember when he used to do pep talks with random magic tricks?
September 17th, 2010 at 9:26 AM ^
I actually used to find Holtz entertaining and interesting. The last few years he has become a sad caricature.
September 17th, 2010 at 6:22 AM ^
to put ol' Lou out to pasture next to Beano Cook. Actually its past time, way past time.
September 17th, 2010 at 6:59 AM ^
September 17th, 2010 at 8:18 AM ^
The man is there for entertainment purposes only, people are drwan to him much like the way people slow down to watch a car accident. People watch to see what outrageous things he says. After the show they take him back to the institution until next week.
September 17th, 2010 at 8:20 AM ^
particularly bold today, are we?
September 17th, 2010 at 8:34 AM ^
his hometown is East Liverpool, OH, which is one of the most awful places on earth. He's one of the more intelligent people to ever come out of that hell hole.
September 17th, 2010 at 8:38 AM ^
It's just that we would all like to get paid a couple hundred K per year to sit in front of a camera and spout utter nonsense about college football, too.
September 17th, 2010 at 8:51 AM ^
September 17th, 2010 at 9:28 AM ^
This just in. Lou Holtz picked Minnesota to beat USC.
September 17th, 2010 at 2:02 PM ^
After all, isn't the universe due for another LOL at Lane Kiffin's expense?
September 17th, 2010 at 8:54 AM ^
I guess it says something (not sure what) about me that when I was looking at the schedule the other day that I thought the same thing that Holtz said. Oh well...
September 17th, 2010 at 9:04 AM ^
Who wins in a three way bat shit crazy/alzheimery match between Lou Holtz, Lee Corso or Beano Cook??
I think Doc Lou summons up his goonie/hoosier lunancy to take it
September 17th, 2010 at 9:19 AM ^
Corso gets a pass since he actually has an excuse for his brain damage.
September 17th, 2010 at 9:24 AM ^
Of all of his silly homerism, God let him be right just this one time.
September 17th, 2010 at 9:34 AM ^
Of course everyone should know by now that Lou Holtz does things like this on purpose to root for his alma mater, nd, or just to get under Mark May's skin. However, Kent State has some really good players (Cobrani Mixon, Eugene Jarvis), the consistently put a few players in the NFL every year. Just like Va Tech, betting on a let down after the beatdown by Alabama and the players assuming they'll roll Kent isn't a terrible prediction IMO.
September 17th, 2010 at 9:57 AM ^
Your opinion is based on objective reasononing.
Holtz's opinion is based on the fact that he is an alum (barely disguised as an objective opinion)
If Kent St. beats Penn St. you would say "I was right, it appears that Penn St. was not mentaly prepared for this game" and we would all give you a +1.
If Kent St. beats Penn St. Holtz would say "WE WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
September 17th, 2010 at 10:01 AM ^
Point taken, I guess Lou just doesn't bother me as much as he bothers everyone else. When he had that segment on CFL like he was giving a halftime speech in a locker room, I was ready to suit up for him.
September 17th, 2010 at 12:02 PM ^
Really? I had almost the exact opposite impression. I thought to myself, "who the hell would play for this lunatic?"
Lou Holtz has always bugged the hell out of me though.
September 17th, 2010 at 9:41 AM ^
and Notre Dame to go 11-1 with a BCS title game berth.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:31 AM ^
PSU looked horrible versus Alabama and Youngstown. Their defense looked slow and the offense looked very meh with their true freshman QB. We just witnessed 2 FCS teams upset BCS conference teams just last week. Kent State is in the MAC, a FBS conference, going against what has looked like a very average PSU team thus far. Now, mayber PSU proves me wrong an busts out this week. The way they've looked, I doubt it.
Why is it crazy for him to pick this game as an upset?! KSU lost to Boston College in what was a fairly close game other than the 2 touchdowns scored in the 3rd quarter. Not to mention the MAC has played a lot of the B10 games tough over the past few seasons.
IMHO, "Crazy" Lou's prediction is far from off-based...
September 17th, 2010 at 12:07 PM ^
I agree that Lou's pick is not crazy, but I would highly doubt that he did the pick with this much reason. Lou looked at a let down game after Bama and his diploma that says Kent State. Thats why its typical Lou. He has just made so many "insane" predictions and assertions that I won't give him credit for this pick.
September 17th, 2010 at 12:13 PM ^
What makes this even worse was that last week when everybody on ESPN was falling over themselves to describe just how bad Alabama was going to destroy PSU, Dr. Lou pretty much said that was not going to happen. He said that this is still Penn State, and at halftime the folks saying Alabama would roll them were going to be eating their words, which made Mark May make that face that he makes almost 100 times every Saturday when Lou says something clueless or just plain stupid. And now he picks Kent State? This guy is just such an irredeemable homer.
