selling jerseys in ohio is definitely a start.
I think the new Big 10 structure is the worst thing that ever happened to the Michigan v. OSU rivalry, and perhaps the best thing that ever happened to the Michigan v. MSU rivalry. Especially considering the fact that there is a distinct possibility that Michigan and OSU will play each other in back to back games.
Although I agree with Coach Hoke that the rivalry with Ohio is the #1 priority of the Michigan program, I would move MSU up from #2 to #1.5 given the new Big 10 structure.
Make no bones about it, unless Sparty suddenly has a horrible multi-year collapse, beating MSU is 100% essential to even having a chance to win the Big 10 Conference.
I've never questioned Coach Hoke, but he needs to find a way to get team 133 (and future teams) to match the intensity that MSU brings to the Michigan game. In the past, Michigan has pretty much just out talented MSU. But, now Dantonio plays the "disrespect" game masterfully, and his teams come out and play like their absolute hardest agaisnt Michigan -- even to the point of basically keeping Michigan in the game by committing repeated stupid personal fouls. Strange to me that knowing this Hoke would make comments like the ones in this article. He didn't out right disrespect MSU, but we all know how they are -- they're going to take this as a slight, and it will be used to fuel their anti-Michigan fire. Again, I don't like questioning Hoke, but maybe just admitting that they've now moved up to an equal footing with OSU might be more appropriate under the circumstances -- even if it was just to defuse Sparty a bit and give them less ammunition.
Five years from now Nebraska will be a bigger rival to Michigan than State, and honestly it probably won't take that long. State is benefitting from the new divisions Michigan stumbling, and Nebraska under estimating the B1G. Eventually both Michigan and Nebraska will be the two dominate programs in the division and State will go back to being more of a speedbump than a constant threat. I may be wrong but I really doubt it.
especially the ND rivalry seems it would become less important as divisional play determines the B1G. You are also spot on that long term the Nebraska-Michigan game will probably determine the Legends division.
As a conference newcomer, I'm still surprised how in threads like this Michigan fans prioritize non-con (AL, ND) and out of division (OSU) games at the expense of winning the division. I appreciate the visceral rivlary with OSU but even that game isn't a must win for the division.
Well, maybe several years in the XII gives me a leg up on the realties of divisional play: No division title---no CCG---no Rose Bowl or National Title---no fun. But that's just me.
Weren't smart enough to make Nebraska-Oklahoma a protected rivalry. You gave away the biggest tradition the school had. For big match-ups with Colorado.
See, all the stuff you mention, you can't do that every year. But the years you don't, if you can still beat Ohio, you've done something. There's something to play for. That last game. Likewise, you can have all that in your grasp...and the other team can come in and ruin it.
But it's hard to understand if you're not a part of the greatest rivalry in all of sports.
The answer to the question of "which team is the biggest rival?" turns, I think, on what happened in the three big rivalries (OSU, MSU, and ND) during your formative years as a fan. For me, we dominated MSU so completely during the 80s and 90s (not to mention Lloyd's 6 straight from 2002 - 2007) it will take a lot more than 4 years for me to care about them. By contrast, even counting the Cooper years, OSU played us more evenly when I was cutting my teeth on the rivalries. ND matters to me because they owned us in the 80s (when they were better than us) and split with us in the 90s (when we were better than them. (Note - I haven't checked the records on any of what I said above but this is how it felt and that probably matters more than what actually happened for purposes of this conversation). As such, I just can't get as excited/concerned/pissed off about MSU as I do OSU and ND. But having said that, if your football memories don't go back that far I can understand why the 4 straight skid to MSU makes you care deeply about that game. I just think in the long view, OSU is definitely a program on par with us and ND, while doing their best to become irrelevant, is pretty close...while MSU is Illinois.
Except Illinois went to a Rose Bowl recently.
Michigan could beat MSU or Ohio. Chances to beat Alabama in Dallas with most of the country watching are rare. If I could make a deal with the devil I would trade a win here for a loss in any of the other games. After the win I would try to get out of the deal so we could win the national championship.
Thad, you didn't run away did you? I have been a member here for about two YEARS longer than you and like I already said, your ridiculous claim never happened. If you could find any single example, let alone five, you would have posted it. What happened?
Ya, now it is personal because if you're talking to me you're 1) lying and 2) disabling me from being able to converse here because of your lies.
your comments on the Georgia game
Where? What comments?
What about Georgia? Are you seriously holding on to something you thought you read, by one person, six months ago? Is it the one example of me telling someone to "enjoy your ACC opponent" which I have already explained ad nauseum as me telling THEM, not all UM fans/posters here?
Even if you're going to dredge up some thread from six months ago that's one single example. You claimed five. So what else? Or are you just a liar?
If you can't back it up then get out of my way.
No one believes you. Every post you have gets negged to be hiddened. No one cares what you have to say. You can cry "prove it!!!, but you're not convincing anyone. You're a joke. Give it up and stop embarrassing yourself. The trolling has played it's course. Congrats; you showed us. But it's just kinda sad now.
lol, so you prove it either. Got it.
Oh ya, because saying that MSU's new QB hasn't proven anything yet and saying that some of our games this year will come down to battles in the trenches is REALLY trolling. Wow. Nothing riles up this fanbase like... planning... what we have to do to win... I guess.
Already proven, no matter how you twist and spin. Trolling is whatever game you're playing. No one can figure how it gets you your jollies when you're not fooling anybody. It just comes off as pathetic. And no one cares to argue it with you anymore. Just telling you you're getting negged because the act is old, and there's no reason to cling to it anymore. Move along.
