I cry when I hug my brothers at wrestling banquets after four years of sweating and bleeding together and I tear up on the couch next to my wife during romantic movies. I have no problem of other people see it differently, I just don't think it warrants criticism. It inspires me that Hoke sees his passion this way.

But for his sake and to lend credibility to this young mans important life decision--let us not forget the rest of this recruiting class and the current players he will be joining that NO DOUBT played a HUGE part in helping him make that decision. There is a very good chance that Green has built a relationship with the Michigan coaches that is special to both sides. Special enough to warrant Hoke getting a little misty. Don't forget that Green was fully aware that UM regarded Isaac as their most wanted RB at one point. After Ty committed to USC, I would have bet the farm that we had no shot at getting Green either. So for them to show him the kind of respect and attention that would lead to him committing today, it's not all that surprising to me. Again, I doubt he wept, but he seems like a very passionate guy. Not all that surprising.

It's a little wierd, but I don't mind it.  I have a feeling Hoke gives those inside the program quite a bit more than we see on TV and in interviews.  I've heard him say before he's an emotional guy, but I rarely see it.  He's quite calm and under control on the sidelines and during interviews. His sideline demeanor is quite different from Rich Rod who would frequently lose his cool and yell at players, coaches, and refs alike.  Sometimes I think in a press conference Hoke is about to drop his guard and get emotional over a player or a win etc., then he doesn't.  So, it's hard to tell if he was acutally beginning to show emotion and stopped himself or if I misread what I was seeing.  Anyways, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's much more emotional behind closed doors with the guys than he lets the rest of us see.

Do you realize that happiness makes you cry?

And when we play as a team, when the old season is over, you and I know it’s going to be Michigan again. Michigan!

First off, Green is from New York. So technically he is not from the south.

Secondly, Hoke said at his first press conference that he doesn't have a son, so the player are his sons, all 115 of them. Hoke cares very much for these kids. You don't know if he was bawling or not, so take it easy.

I cried like a baby when my daughter was born, when we took her off to college, when my parents died, and I'll get choked up at the occasional movie. I just don't believe that an 18-year old who hasn't spent a minute in Ann Arbor as a student or UM player warrants tears. I was totally OK with Hoke's display of emotion at his introductory presser; he's got a long relationship with UM. I also had no problem with RR's emotion at the press conference when he responded to Rosenberg and Snyder's allegations that he was running an abusive sweatshop. Of course, that was comedy gold for plenty of people here who made endless fun of RR for crying in that circumstance.

Must we demand that others behave and act the way we want them to?
Let Hoke be Hoke, he is genuine and that is a big part of his appeal to recruits and players and parents and alumni n fans. Celebrate that we have a man in charge of our football team and not a plastic phony like Saban!

On a few occasions I came across Saban's Sunday MSU football recap show. I've never seen a stiffer, more awkward, emotionless, colder fish on TV than Nick Saban. He makes Dantonio seem friendly.

According to Derrick Green, Hoke cried while accepting his commitment. This was an interpretation over the phone. And now the anecdote is picking up steam on television and espn.com. That's fine. And, because I care to try to avoid the Fundamental Attribution Error, and because I don't find sentimentality pathetic to care anyway, I'm not inclined to judge what a man cries about. But I do care about truth (and to struggle and equivocate before making decisions). And I'm not yet convinced that this even happened.

With the little knowledge I so far have of the anecdote, it seems additionally conceivable that Hoke is an exuberant fellow and responded with the type of emotion that might be honestly misinterpreted as crying.

"I have long thought that anyone who does not regularly - or ever - gaze up and see the wonder and glory of a dark night sky filled with countless stars loses a sense of their fundamental connectedness to the universe."
