Hoke: starting QB to be named later this week

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Was supposed to be named today.

Could it be that the longer this is dragged out, it's more likely to be Morris?

Hoke on QB decision: "We'll probably end up later in the week. we want to make sure we're right."

Hoke: "we feel good about both guys. other potential changes we'll get to later in the week"

winning every week or this is going to implode.  No matter what everyone thinks about the current staff, if this goes under,  we will be in transition again.  We at least recruited well with the last transition.  I fear with another transition, talent will become sparse.  Kids see what people are saying about the coach and university.  There is no shortage of media outlets.  Why would they want to come here?   Maybe the vision of the new Presidnent will come true.  Sports are not in the mission of the University.  We will be the Harvard of the Midwest in sports. I though Utah would be a turning point.  It was .. but South through a storm with no end in sight.

The decision has already been made, he's just not going to release it to the public. I mean why would he want Minnesota to know so they could gameplan for each scenario. You start Gardner, Minnesota loads up the box and forces Michigan to beat you with the pass. You start an inexperienced true Sophomore who looks like he could also be prone to turnovers, Minnesota loads up the box and forces Michigan to beat you with the pass. Oh...wait...

I don't have a problem with not announcing it. I do have a problem with the lack of candor. If he had said, "I've made a tentative decision, but I don't have any reason to let Minnesota know that decision," I'd have been perfectly fine with his saying that.  But, instead it sounds like we don't comment on these things so don't ask.

It's so pathetic that we are going through this. With a fifth-year senior with the experience and knowlege he possesses, one would think this would be a no brainer.

Your right it is a no brainer. Gardner has no chance of playing QB in the NFL. Let him try and develop as a WR or TE. Anyone who isn't wearing maize colored glasses at all times can easily see we have no chance of winning the Big Ten this year. Let Morris get the PT he needs for next year.

If Hoke moves Devin to the receiving corps I will lose what little respect for him I have left. Devin has done more for him than anyone else on the team:

  1. two position switches
  2. carries the cross of 9-effin-8
  3. sacrificed his body behind a poorly developed O Line
  4. tried to develop his passing skills despite lacking a actual positon coach
  5. learning a different scheme with new responsibilities....again

Yeah, Devin is struggling but god dammit he's earned the right to end his career on his own terms as the quarterback of this team.

Hoke moving him would be a slap in the face. "Well, Devin, thanks for everything but you just dont have it, kid. We're giving up on you." Morris has shown NOTHING that indicates he would provide an upgrade in performance at the position. Meanwhile everyone else is supposed to beleive they still have a shot at the POS B1G Title. What kind of message would that send to the rest of the team?

The message to the team would be, were going to put you in the best situation to win in the game of life. Gardner is a really smart kid who has already graduated and understand what is best for him long term. Gardner is not the same explosive QB he was at one point. The drop off from him to Morris isn't that substantial. I have no doubt Morris could have put up big points against ASU, nothing against ND, done okay against Miami of Ohio and nothing against Utah.

This decision, if it is not injury related is entirely about which QB is most likely to lead the team to a win this weekend.  Hoke has himself in a position where he needs to win just about every game. There is no developing players for the NFL or seasoning a guy for next season.  It is about winning right now.

Unless DG is hurt, I can't see Hoke picking Morris given this set of circumstances.  I'm not insinuating that DG has earned the position, it just the best of two poor choices right now.

@BloomingtonBlue

Devin has eight to ten games left in his NCAA career. They already tried him at WR and it didn't work. They aren't going to switch him to WR or TE at this point in his career. If anything changes with him, it will be his spot on the depth chart under the letters "QB."

Actually yes, you are wrong.

And yes, it didn't work. A whopping 266 yards and 4 TDs. That isn't stellar by any means. He never played WR until 2012 and it wasn't easy for him. The guy is a QB 100%.

about how many Coke products equal a Minnesota ticket?  I have 2 extra tickets and I don't want to get screwed.  So it's OK for me to trade 1 ticket for a 12 pack?   Should I write the AD?  I'd hate to cut into his action ...

Give Morris a game. If the offense still doesn't go, then play Speight. If that doesn't work, then play Bellomy, so on and so forth. Do whatever it takes.
