Hoke says Peppers will "get his feet wet" on returns

Submitted by BlueCube on

Brady Hoke said he expects Peppers to get his feet wet on returns to see how he does. He also hints he might get some time with Nuss. I don't think this is any huge revelation. He's a coach and he's going to put him in situations he can handle and be successful. I'm sure he sees the talent and it's hard to get excited.

He also said he's thinks Canteen and Mone to have an impact this year.

Video from Campus Insiders interview is auto play so the link is provided.

It's a day early but since I have to head to that cesspool known as Columbus, OH this later today, I'd like to welcome Jabrill as well as the other freshmen coming to campus this weekend and wish them huge success in their Michigan careers. Go Blue!

I think he will be able to make an instant impact to our special teams. Having a dangerous returner is a great asset.

Punting's worse as far as becoming less and less important with the advent of the spread punt coverage. You get fair catches most of the time and when you don't the returner gets swarmed right away.

Kicking off from closer didn't seem to have as much impact in college as in the NFL. Most teams seemed like they were kicking with more loft to get better coverage vs trying to knock it out of the back of the endzone every time since the opposing team gets it on the 25 now.

And if he does end up returning kickoffs, he will certainly get a chance against OSU as Urban elects a pooch-style kick that does not make it to the endzone. Most of the time it works in his favor as the returner is usually tackled before the 20 but it scares the shit out of me.

This should be a relief to those that have speculated that, while Peppers should get a chance to get the ball in his hands, this staff will insists he sticks purely to defense as a freshman.

I may have been one of those people.

Or WR...

I remember when he was committed and everyone was like "oooh nooo, let's him master CB for x amount of years, blah, blah, blah, not even Woodson played offense early in his career."

Giving him a package or formation with a Tecmo Super Bowl number of plays isn't going to stunt his growth at DB. And just because he may only get 4 runs plays and 4 routes (Tecmo style)...doesn't mean you're only running 8 plays when he's in.

That's what many people who've never played football forget from time to time. He may only have 4 running plays and 4 pass routes all from the same formation, but you could run 50 plays out of that if you wanted. You're not tipping your hand at all. Hence the phrase "route combinations."

Did SRK have another heart - to - heart with the blog that I missed or did it just take you a couple years to come up with this schtick? Pretty funny either way. Might be my favorite since I Only Reply In GIFs.

Disclaimer: I have no beef with SRK and think he's a good member of the MGocommunity.

the tears and lamentations of those who dared try and tackle him.

/too much?

Sounds great but it would seem every skill guy with speed gets his chance at the return game. Of course, that would be just one more step in Peppers' quest to be the next Woodson.

...is going to ruin it for Peppers. At least at the start.

Hoke is going to get tired of answering questions about him and talking about him more than anyone else...and do some shit just to prove a point and make him earn the hype.

It's pretty obvious Hoke hates talking about one single player...and for it to be a freshman who's never played a down, I fear he's going to get all "TEAM" when it comes to Peppers unless/until he just simply can't be kept off the field.

I'd much rather people (media, not fans) STFU and then turn on the TV to watch us at Notre Dame and go "OH SHIT! Peppers is playing offense...wait, and he's wearing #2!!! OOOOH SHIT!! LET'S GOOOOOO!!!'

I'll take that over some reporter getting the scoop and breaking the news, ruining that moment, and me having the info ahead of time. Even worse, I'll take that moment over that moment not happening because Peppers is the dime back before a month because he's "gotta earn it."

No more leashes, let's these guys play and let's roll. Enough proving points (unless it's a discipline type deal).

My post was somewhat tongue and cheek and it was about Hoke's reaction to the constant hype.

I think you and the other responses did to my post EXACTLY what you're saying I did to this video, lol.

All I was saying is Hoke is not one to single out anyone while they're still playing, especially a freshman.

...just like bubble screens. I think it would be ridiculous that a coach didn't run a play just because it was asked about over and over.

But at least 1% of you (or at least me) almost felt like we didn't run bubble screens because it was always asked and talked about.

And if you all think coaches do or don't do things because of the media, you're kidding yourself. Greg Popovich has openly said he'll do things like that during the regular season just to prove a point.

He was once hounded about why he never played zone and then had his team play zone for the entire 4th quarter just because he's Pop.

As the media hypes Peppers more, the TEAM has to hear and deal with it. It wouldn't shock me at all if Hoke gave Peppers the super "freshman" treatment just to tamper things down.

Sorry Mr Yost, have to point this one out.

You said:

"I'll take that over some reporter getting the scoop and breaking the news, ruining that moment, and me having the info ahead of time."

This from someone who frequents MGoBlog on a regular basis to get the latest info.

Thanks for posting this. Can't wait to see what Peppers and the rest of the team can do this fall. Bonnie Bernstein singing Baby Got Back makes me smile too.

Especially Mone. Typically you get a young DT and all Hoke says is "weight. technique. weight. weight. technique. weight. technique. weight. technique. weight. technique. weight. technique. weight. technique. weight. technique. weight. technique. weight. technique. weight. technique. weight. technique. weight. technique. weight. technique."

To hear him get excited about him (and not just his butt) is encouraging.

Use him on O like they experimented with Norfleet last year. Not a doubt in my mind he can have more impact right away. Honestly, Norfleet's value is depreciating greatly in my opinion.
