Hoke says Barnum to Center

Submitted by kaykaybroke on

Kyle Meinke talked to Coach Hoke about position switches this spring. Although it's been rumored, he confirmed Ricky Barnum's switch to center, and disclosed a few more switches as well.

I was surprised by the phrase "first crack" because it implies that, as of today, the coaches think Barnum has a better chance at giving them what they need at the center position than either Khoury or Miller. Maybe Khoury's brief-but-disastrous performance in the Sugar Bowl wasn't an anomaly. (Insert requisite praise for David Molk, PBUH.)

Most hilarious and rewarding look-up of an online acronym that I've ever come across. Usually I'm annoyed and think "god dammit I need to look up another one, just write it out if it's not something common," but I say bravo, sir. To others: seriously stop saying things like TNENENSITTWT and just write it out. Then get off my 22-year-old lawn because I feel old for complaining about this.

It states Schofield to RT, with Bryant and Mealer competing for LG. Also, it says that Jordan Paskorz (who the article lists as a walk on?) and Chris Eddins will be moving to a blocking TE roll. Black is moving to a DT position, and the Roh and Beyer moves were already known. Interesting, but nothing too ground shaking.

One other interesting note is that Hoke said he would discuss attrition at his press conference on Friday. The article only mentions Stonum and Bell.

So from what I got out of that, our starting 5 for spring goes: Lewan, Mealer, Barnum, Omameh (spelling?), and Schofield. Should be interesting to see what happens over spring/late summer. It might not even get solved until partway through the season too

I didn't know either.  But then again I'm not an insider.  Won't he need to put on 30-40lbs in the offseason?  Wow.   I know the average MgoBlogger could probably due that, but that is tough for a 20 year old athlete.

He was above 260 by the end of last season.  And since he'll be playing the 3-tech, which is based more on quickness than size, then he should be able to play even if he's only in the 280-285 lb. range, which is easily reachable if he wants to get there.

Are all those first year UFRs when he was unfortunately out there as a freshman and showed good speed but got plowed a lot by big offensive linemen. It's amazing what going from a true freshman to a junior can do....

Typically seniors like Mealer go INTO the Spring with the starting nod or working with the first team because they've earned it.

However, I would be somewhat surprised if he held of Bryant. Not because Mealer isn't good, absolutely not. Great player and an even greater person.

I just think Bryant's growth from his freshman to his sophomore year is going to be "tremendous."

I also am not positive Barnum holds off Khoury for the job at center, his snaps were a little shaky, but nothing an entire offseason practicing them can't fix. I'm just saying I don't think it's 100% set in stone he doesn't end back up at LG and Khoury is at C.

If I had to guess...I'd say...

Lewan-Bryant-Barnum-Omameh-Schofield: 40%

Lewan-Barnum-Khoury-Omameh-Schofield: 30%

Lewan-Kalis-Barnum-Khoury-Omameh-Schofield: 20%

Lewan-Mealer-Barnum-Omameh-Schofield: 10%
