Hoke presser: "I will not wear a headset"

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

In the newest Michigan press circus that was live on ESPN, here are our counts:

"It's in the statement": 4

"We're not gonna talk about injuries": 3

  • Peppers is hurt
  • Does not believe Brandon left him out to dry
  • Gardner will start at QB with Bellomy as his backup and Speight as the #3...
  • ESPN was there along with Joe Shad
  • Schad asks Hoke about headset, he says "no I won't. I have guy behind me that relays info to me"........

Oh and.....

Hoke: "I like our football mindset and where our team is at."

I also think people like having root canals.

Brady Hoke is a hell of a teaching coach, and the d-line bears that out. He may be a horrible in game coach, and head coach in general, but give credit where it's due.

Sure, you can get some upvotes by poking fun at him, but it reflects poorly on all who do it for cheap laughs and "upvotes".

Dear coach Hoke,

Please stop being a nice guy. Show some urgency and anger. Pay attention to every detail. Because your laid-back attitude and trusting people to do their jobs haven't worked out well so far.

From time to time, I do encounter some people that enjoy a good root canal, i.e. endodontics.

That is if they are executed properly and I communicate what we are doing.  I do equate a hypersensitive pulp, irreversible pulpitits, with a boxer who has taken too many blows to the head.  But there are other times where I say the tooth has suffered a high ankle sprain.

I hate that he thinks all is well. He has no
Urgency at. Is he really this out of touch with reality?

Does he not realize he's one of the worst coaches in college football? I really dislike him now.

If he wore a headset the same people getting pissed and annoyed by him not wearing one, would just find something else to complain about.  I'm more concerned with player development and getting embarrased against the toddler seals, we seem to have the baby ones under control.  If your going to complain about something, complain about the other 100 things that actualy matter.

I don't care if the HC wears a headset or not if the team is winning, but it's Hoke's typical answer to the question why he doesn't that bothers me.  In addition to him claiming not having a headset let's him be more involved in coaching during the game, he always brings up that there's a guy behind him who tells him the plays--as if knowing the playcall is the only thing a headset is useful for!  Gah!!!!  Having a headset may have alerted him to the fact that his starting QB just got dinged in the melon and needs to be taken out of the game immediately.  I don't think the GA behind him passing on the playcall quite suffices in that regard.

Lest you think I said there are no problems that is not what I said.  Wearing a headset is just not one of them.

As for the quote " I like our football mindset and where our team is at."  This can mean a number of things. We need the context to understand rightly.  Hoke has said many times he is not satisfied with the teams play.  So I don't think he is talking about that. Or their record.  He qualified "mindset" with football.  The "where our team is at" is referring back to the football mindset.  So what it looks like he is trying to get across, is that the team is not letting all the controversy derail there football work.  Trying to continue to lift up this team amid the storm.

It is easy to kick a man while he is down or pile on.  To snipe at him while hidden behind an internet wall.  Have grave mistakes been made? Yep!  People piling on is a mistake also.

If he wore a headset he would be distracted from all the clapping and butt slapping he needs to do.  He might not even get to point at the oblate spheroid made of leather.  He points because he can't pronounce it by the way.  Although that is just hypothetics.

Headsets are for two things:

1)  Getting information

2)  Relaying information to others.

Hoke clearly doesn't want information from anyone.   He doesn't seem to be able to process information on the fly at all.  And he rarely seems to give any information out during a game.  He doesn't call plays.  So really, since he DOESN'T ACTUALLY DO ANYTHING, why does he need a headset?

Oh yeah, maybe if he'd had a headset, and a spotter in the booth, someone could have told him that his freakin' QB was about to pass out on the field last weekend.  But that wouldn't have helped anything, would have it?

In college and pro FB, who was the last person you could remember who didn't wear a headset? Me, it's Paterno and Bowden, both program figure heads towards the end for historic programs.

Hoke hasn't earned this no headset pass.  He's about as clued in as an 80 yo Bowden or Paterno was.

Wore a headset more often than Paterno, and I think Bowden actually had a clue about what was happening on the field for the most part. Paterno was clueless out there for about 10 years. Hoke is 2/3 their age and doesn't have a clue what is happening out there. He's not only not earned the right to skip out on the headset, but he hasn't even earned the right to be a head coach at a serious program

We should piss test Hoke.  Anyone that likes where this team is and where their mindset is certainly high on something.  All Hoke is at this point is a talking head that claps, points, and slaps asses.  Great job you're doing Brady, a great fucking job.

is also fighting for his job.  There is no assurance Dave Brandon will be gone before him, he can't risk alienating him..

Brady may sound dumb in a press conference, but he probably isn't, and I'm sure he has his own advisors.
