Hoke: Peppers has to earn #2 jersey

Submitted by Ghost of BCook… on

Although he will likely wear the #2 before he leaves Ann Arbor, it doesnt' appear that it will be this season as was widely speculated yesterday.

Woodson wore No. 2 at Michigan, and while it has not been given special designation, Hoke believes it is a number that should be earned.

What number will the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Peppers wear this fall?

“We’re not sure yet,” Hoke said after speaking to the Sound Mind Sound Body football campers about the value of education Friday at Chandler Park Academy. “He may be wearing (No.) 5.”

Yeah, could be possible.  The only thing this really confirms is that Peppers is not currently assigned the #2 and the photo that was circulating yesterday was indeed from a recruiting visit as some speculated.

This jersey number thing just keeps getting more and more confusing. While I appreciate trying to educate fans about past legends I feel like the whole thing has become complicated. I don't enjoy players changing their numbers after establishing themselves with different numbers. Also I don't know what to do with the WR numbers. Desmond on tr Heisman with #21 and has been worn by other greats. Braylon endowed a scholarship for #1 and it hasn't been worn since. Do we need to have to great WRs before we see the #1 jersey worn again?

I wonder if they will turn the #2 into an offical legends number with a Woodson patch. Obviously, that ceremony wouldn't happen for the first game (Penn St. would probably be the only game that's worthy of such a ceremony). I guess Peppers could already be wearing #2, but in my scenario it seems logical that he would wear something else until that ceremony.

I guess such a ceremony would also depend on Woodson's playing schedule.

I think it's just one of those "you know it when you see it" kind of things. Manningham and Hemmingway probably should've gotten it, though.

I think that's what sent us down this awful, awful road to begin with.  Manningham didn't get it, which led to everyone thinking, "Well if he doesn't deserve it, then this guy doesn't deserve it," etc. etc.  Manningham should have gotten it, Hemmingway probably should have gotten it, and Gallon definitely should have gotten it.  Gallon probably would have gotten it if he hadn't already been given the 21, which was probably poor foresight by the coaches.  They probably want to get the frickin number on the field as badly as anyone so they can stop answering questions about it.  Now Funch can't get it either.  If someone besides Funchess (who already has a legends jersey) goes off this year, just give it to them next year and be done with it.  Every year give it to someone unless the whole team sucks.  If Jabrill is the best corner after fall practice, just give it to him so he doesn't have to switch numbers and be done with it.  I'm so sick of this bullshit.  It's absurd that people get so offended by this nonsense.  I'm offended by our lack of championships.  Period.

The whole numbers issue is to the point of being embarrassing. Just assign the numbers when they become available and be done with it. Did Tyrone Butterfield earn the #1 jersey? Did Vincent Smith earn the #2 jersey? The numbers look cool and should be issued every year. This is a microcosm of the over indulgence in history and tradition that has hurt the program. Seriously, get over it already and focus on winning some fucking games.

So Vincent Smith and Justin Turner came in and "earned" it?  I realize they were before Hoke, but give me a break.  #2 is #2.  Woodson has not been retired yet.

the results can be good.  See Jeremy Gallon's TD catch @Minnesota in 2012.

I don't understand why we don't give the guy below a scholarship. I mean, he can go up and get balls that even Charles Woodson & Taco Pants couldn't reach.

Auction off the numbers, like we do with the coaches.

For a suitable donation, number thirty-four could be the "Mack and Mary Smith #34".

Number thirty-five could be the "Bill and Betty Jones #35".  And so on.

Since it's my idea, I get 10% of the proceeds.  Hey, I'll use the money to buy a number.

I suggest some kind of round robin competition amongst the players for number assignment. Win the sack race? #1. Eat the most pies? #2. Solve a Rubick's cube the quickest? #100.

I wish MGoBlog had crowd sourced funding for al Borges's title when he was here. Would have been ultimate trolling of the AD, and even more awkward with Heiko.

Brandon is going to see this and a literal lightbulb will appear above his head. You will receive 0% and this naming/numbers thing will become even more idiotic. Why, man? Why?

Now you've gone and done it, you jerk.

Introducing the J. Ira and Nicki We're so Fucking Rich You Don't Have the Balls to Say No to Us Harris  #1, #2, #11, #21, #87, and #98 jerseys.

They'll have to use an ultra-condensed typeface to get it all to fit, but even then it will wrap around front to back.

You know what will really right the ship with the football program? Really setting serious priorities, like who gets assigned what number. That's a good thing for everyone to really focus in on.

Seriously, everyone was pretty much in agreement that Braylon was being ridiculous about giving a player the #1 jersey. Just give the players their numbers and let that be it.

I like the legends jerseys. I'm not sure how ignoring our tradition and history is going to make the team better. Us, Kentucky, and Louisville all have bball jerseys retired and are fine. What's going to get us back on top isn't ignoring tradition but recruiting blue chip players and attracting the best coaches and cordinators. I do agree that there are too many of them though. Just have 4 for the three heisman winners and # 1 jersey.

I'm all for our history and tradition...but for the love of god get 98 off of DG. Ot's like looking at a goofy created player in Madden
