"It's getting hard to keep my dislike for them, because they've been so classy and unbelievable to us." Said Troy, who played in the OSU marching band along with his wife, Denise.
Hoke offers 4 tickets to kid who named his tumor "Michigan"
Reversed, would Ohio act similarly? It's hard to tell.
quite frankly, I doubt it
They might offer him a free tattoo!
I would honestly be shocked if they didn't.
This is not a difficult decision to make, and anyone would be inclined to offer such a gift. Urban Meyer would absolutely do the same thing for a young Michigan fan. The difference, I suspect, is that Coach Meyer would have already made several media appearances to accept praise for his gracious gesture.
let's not devolve it into this kind of argument/half-assed shit flinging.
If there's going to be shit flung around here, it'd better be full assed!
Maybe not, but I don't think you can blame them for that. Hoke went above and beyond, that's why it's special. You can't blame someone who doesn't go above and beyond, because that would just mean it's expected behavior, and therefore not special.
It feels good to know our coach is Brady Hoke and not Urban Meyer.
This is a reminder of that. Sometimes we get so caught up in the rivalry that we forget that this is just sports. It is temporary distraction from life. It's meant to be fun. Coach Hoke understands that perfectly.
Frankly, this is the single best thing he has done as coach. I'm proud he is our coach.
I sort of think the opposite. This shows to me that the Michigan Football program isn't just sports. It's supposed to represent an extremely high ideal for how to live and act. It's supposed to be a place where children enter and good men leave. The program at its very best should be bound up with all the ideals we want the most public face of our university to represent, and should not just be a sports team.
"The Rotary Club of Jackson, MI has offered to pay for the Reed family's hotel stay."
Between things like this and Brady Hoke's offer, it makes me that much more proud of Brady Hoke, this staff, this program and the people that work to support it through their efforts. The culture surrounding Michigan football really is a great one. Awesome stuff indeed.
Nice gesture. Given the events of this past weekend, might be changing the allegiances of one more kid.
now that he beat "Michigan"; what is his fake 40 time? Hoke can flip anyone.
His 40 time is posted in Ohio State's facilities as a 4.15.
Hmm… 11W suddenly doesn’t hate Brady as much:
Yeah keep reading the comments until you get to the one about how "if anyone wants to lose their respect for Michigan, just go to MGoBlog." In some ways I feel bad for them, as they drown in their own delusion.
we do have like 7 or 8 threads about arrests of ohio players...
sometimes I get sad because some of our fans, some on this site, act like little brother to ohio in the way that sparty is little brother to us...
pathetic, you know?
and hypocrisy sucks.
I hate to admit it, but I agree. Though in this particular context, it is kind of a big deal and it is a slow news period. When 4-5 kids are arrested/charged over a single weekend in the dead of summer, it is going to get some notice.
Yeah, my second thought after "how awesome that Hoke did that" was "Oh god don't let that small minority of UM fans be dicks to this family when they show up in their Buckeye gear"
But there’s also comments like this:
This story oozes it.
Yes, it is a Huge game and usually has a myriad of story lines: Big Ten Championship, bragging rights, pay-back, win one for the Gipper/Bo/Woody, Heisman hopes, NC chances, but it's hardly life or death. It's a game, it might be The Game but win or lose there will always be next year. This little guy wasn't guaranteed that. So to see Hoke go out of his way to make this upcoming version of The Game a special one for Grant after he fought his own battle it makes me very proud of the tradition both schools share together that allowed this wonderful story to happen.
So for the first, last, and only time in my life:
Hail Hail to Michigan.”
Weirdest thing ever. I edit my comment and it becomes a double post.
This is the first comment on 11W:
"Well I guess I'll spit on one less Michigan fan this week to return the favor."
The rest do get better though.
Makes me want to spit on anyone who compares MGoBlog's quality to that of Eleven Warriors.
That spit joke actually made me laugh...cuz it was a joke - they've responded to this story with more overall class than this site has.
I read 11W almost as frequently as this site. I like to gain the rival's perspective, and I know I'll enjoy future Games even more, with greater insight into their program. The 12-year-old level banter is embarrassing - on both sites - but I guess that will always be there.
I do like this site a lot, but I must say that at least on 11W there are far less grammar police, over-sensitive whiners, arguments over whether something is OT or not (and disclaimers just in case someone thinks it is - oh no!). Oh, and the way the slightest criticism of Brian brings on a North Korean-esque defend-the-dear-leader, knee-jerk response? - love that. I think Brian's a big enough boy to defend himself folks - if/when he cares to.
There's a lot I like about this site, I just needed to purge some accumulated BS. Just keepin' it real - we like that here- right?
Correcting someone's grammar is far more classy than "SCUM!!!" On every other comment.
I enjoy reading all the comments in "Macho Man Savage" voice.
The first and only time I went on it was the other day to see what they had to say about all the crap going on. I expected 11W to at least somewhat be like MGoBlog except with more incest, but I was shocked at the large pile of crap I saw instead.
It's not their fault; they ran out of coolers.
I have a hard time seeing Urban Meyer or Gene Smith doing something like this
What specifically in their past leads you to believe they don't care about kids with cancer?
I didn't say "they don't care about kids with cancer", I'd more be surprised if they went out of their way to do something as kind as this out of the blue like Brady did
It's not exactly out of the blue as the story gained a good deal of national attention. I'm sure fans, alumni, etc probably suggested somebody from Michigan make some sort of gesture. Also it's not like it would be hard for them to get their hands on tickets, so I don't think I would say "they went out of their way." So in a world where Meyer and Smith didn't offer some sort of genture to a Michigan fan in a similar situation they would have to be, at best, indifferent and at worst hostile to the idea. I don't see how anybody can draw a lesson from how they run their sports teams that would lead them to this conclusion.
The only reason I bring this up is that I think there's way too much character assassination in sports. People show that they can rise above sports rivalries all the time yet fans are always quick to assume the worst about each other.
That our coach is getting him the tickets. Ohio gets an allotment, right? Give him the best seats in the house. Maybe right over the tunnel?
That's quite a leap you made there...
Urbz gave the kid tickets to see Ohio vs Buffalo. Hoke gave them tickets to The Game and told him to keep beating Michigan. You be the judge!
Some things are just the right thing to do and this is one of them.
Someone will know this. As a visiting team, does Meyer have the ability to offer tickets? This just is so good for us to make this move- on so many levels. Perfect. And may he make a full recovery.
This was my thought as well. It seems that Ohio State could have made the same gesture.
Faith in humanity restored.
This kind of news better make Sportscenter, not that it's important, most important thing is this kid being healthy. But with all the rubbish about OSU, I'd like to see a truly good story come out today.
Coach Hoke is a true Michigan Man and leading by example. This is how a head coach should behave himself. If you want the boys to grow to be men you have to lead by example. Its great to be a Michigan Wolverine!
Very cool, but could this be considered a recruiting violation:)
I thought maybe Dave Brandon would've done this already but I think its better coming from the head coach. Real recognizes real! And our head coach's class is real.
The Michigan Difference. Glad to have not only a coach lead my favorite team, but a human being that these men will hopefully follow. Hoke realizes, sometimes you have to put the "x's and o's" out of the equation and just LEAD!
It would be great if they could hoist him up to touch the banner even if he is an OSU fan. Better yet for the kid would be to dot the i at THE GAME.
Brady Hoke is made of class. Love my coach
It seems like there is probably something to Urban Meyer's Circle of Trust culture and the amount of shennanigans that go on under his watch. I always want OSU to go undefeated until they play Michigan. I want OSU to be the #2 program in the country. While there is definitely a little shadenfreude, I don't take a lot of joy in any Big Ten program having character issues. I was upset when Terrel Pryor picked OSU over Michigan. Maybe it was Tressel's scumbaggery that allowed Pryor to turn out bad, but Pryor's character flaws could have already been in place. I'm glad Brady Hoke recruits high quality kids and turns them into Michigan Men.
That said, jeebus, 6 arrests in one weekend?! What the heck is going on over there? Did anyone get shot in the face?
Ummm...wrong thread bub?
I hope he is crying his eyes out over an ohio loss in the Big House!
Epic double point.
I wonder if when he does something great he points at himself in the mirror?
"Brady Hoke enabling equivalent of pedophile fan."
This move doesn't make that attempt at humor look any better.
give it a fucking rest
is also fantastic public relations. They really should let the kid come out and dot the i, and touch the banner too, if he wants.
God knows that Michigan fans can bring a passion that is seond to none. We scream at the TV and in the stands. Despite all the passion we never lose sight of humanity. Got to respect Hoke and love what he did here. Were the shoe on the other foot and Meyer making a similar offer, I can not imagine anyone who posts or comments here commenting about not spitting on an Ohio fan.
It all comes down to perspective. It's sad how few fan bases have it. It's gratifying that our fan base hasn't lost it.
Grant's father, Troy, said his son did not hesitate to answer the coach. "He gave a very clear yes—he's very excited." Troy said.
Sounds like Hoke can recruit...talks to the kid once and already has a commitment.
we'll start seeing increased jersey sales in Ohio
/ No. Not really.
This is why I love Hoke. We didn't hire the "sexiest" coach, but we damn sure hired the right one. Winning championships are important, beating Ohio is important. But Hoke really shows his character in situations like this, and that's what's most important.
And while I'm sure that Hoke would have done this regardless, giving this kid tickets immediately following Buckeye arrest-a-palooza just for some reason makes me feel so much better about it.
I noticed while reading the posts at 11W that no one asked why Urban Meyer didn't do something like this. Almost like they can't acknowledge that thier coach was check mated here.
I believe Urban visited the kid in the hospital and gave him tickets to OSU-Buffalo. Also, since the kid's parents are OSU Marching Band alum, he'll be on the field with the marching band during the game at some point. So they didn't need to ask why Urban Meyer didn't do something like this, because he did (OSU-Buffalo isn't Michigan-OSU of course, but a gesture is still a gesture).
that's SO Michigan
Indeed. I love this story. And it doesn't surprise me in the least that Hoke would do this. Pure class.
Class. Something OSU is not and something their football players try to avoid at all cost.
I want to study twice as hard and acquire knowledge in medical sciences now after reading that. I must.
I have wanted to throw a battery at that kid since the story broke.
great act of kindness. perspective.
lead by example, as mentioned above.
great for their family...they all need a positive thing like this to get them through.
Hoke will be able to use this as a teaching point for a long time with his players and recruits.
this is why Michigan is different.
This is a perfect example of why this rivalry is so great. A kid wants to beat cancer, so Michigan is the logical name for it, because that's the focus. Awesome. And he beats it, and both sides show their human sides, reaching out to him. I love that we're offering him tickets. Because, while the rivalry is important, there are things that elevate us all above sports.
I understand that Meyer is an easy target right now, but this is not the sort of thing you can take shots about. For all we know, Urban has offered the family tickets to an OSU home game (would make sense, wouldn't it?) and for all we know the two athletic departments actually communicated about the ticket offer beforehand. It wouldn't surprise me if they took the opportunity to share in a chance to life a family's spirits.
You doubt that? Fine, but remember: genuine, decent humanity is not the sort of thing that sports team affiliation has any bearing on.
I kind of hope that the kid gets announced in the Big House and gets a huge cheer. That would be awesome.
you are the only non-mod poster that I always stop and take a look at. Thank you for what you contribute to this site.
I think the reporting would be very different if OSU and Meyer were involved. Giving them the benefit of the doubt in this situation seems a bit much.
In fact, giving Meyer the benefit of the doubt given his record is probably more than any rival fanbase should do, whether deep down underneath it all he's a good guy or not.
Hoke's gonna Hoke, and I'm pretty damned happy about it, too.
Don't forget the gesture that Hoke did for the ND fan who had a myocardial infarction (heart attack).
"This isn’t something that was set up by their (public relations) staff,” said Staudacher, the 69-year-old Bay City retiree. “This is from a guy who cares enough about a human being to sit down with a felt pen and write a note. It’s someone he doesn’t know, has never met and is a Notre Dame fan, but he took the time to do it.
“If that isn’t class, I don’t know what is.”
I am very glad Hoke is our coach. He gets it. He is a classy Michigan Man who has his priorities in order.
Good to hear. Great class move
That's like 900 dollars isn't it? Does he have to pay a seat licensing fee for them?
Hopefully this kid will come, have a good time, and watch his team lose.
