If he stays it's likely because they cannot line up the right replacement now. I'd rather Hackett buy time and get the right guy than make the 3rd bad hire in a row.
I don't think it matters though--the timing and the leak to Sam suggest to me that this is likely a termination meeting. It's hard to feel too sorry for Hoke since he's had 4 years to make his dream job work out, but I do wish it had worked out. He seems like a good man.

That's a slippery slope. What if Hoke goes 8-4 next year? Still not where Michigan wants to be, but a marked improvement from this season. Then you look like more of a dick for firing him.

Its going to be a sad day for this football team in that meeting room. Alot of people will be losing their jobs right before Christmas. I wish things could have worked out differently.

right before Christmas? You say that like they aren't going to be able to afford to buy their kids gifts. These guys will go home to their mansions, hang out with their families that they havent had quality time with in a while, and talking about how relieved they are to be out of that shit show.
They will all get hired again, somewhere else, and have lucrative contracts again. I think they will be fine.

I live in the same neighborhood as some of the coaches. I have friends who live in the same neighborhood as most of the others. None of us -- including the coaches -- live in mansions.
Yes, the head coach and coordinators are paid extremely well. The rest of the staff, while well paid, are not earning "I don't worry about being out of a job" money. That's not to mention guys you've never heard of -- like S&C coordinators who work under Wellman -- who make a whole let less and who are likely out of a job if Wellman goes.
Yes, most of the people likely to be impacted will probably catch on somewhere else, and if they don't, it probably means they aren't that good. It's hard on their families either way, though. If they're lucky, they're picking up and moving and leaving all their friends behind to start over again. If they're unlucky, Dad's out of a job and looking for a new line of work.
I'm not suggesting you should shed a tear for any of these guys, and I'm not saying I don't think that relieving Hoke of his HC duties isn't the right thing to do. I do think it's wrong to pretend all of these guys are being driven home in their Rolls where they'll relax by their indoor pools as long as they want and light cigars with $100 bills. There definitely is a human element to this.

You grossly over estimate what assistants make and/or what the housing market costs in ann arbor are. I am not saying they should claim poverty, just that there is a massive gap between upper middle class and rich.

I do agree with you but it has to be done.
The program is at a crossroads and it is going to either pick itself up, dust itself off, and make some hay or it won't and that will be the really sad day. It stinks but he and his family and the coaches and their families are all going to be fine. Financially they don't need these jobs and emotionally I'm sure there close to wanting to leave us behind. Their players probably a different story but even though the fan base has been right it has been difficult for them which stinks.

If Hackett lays down the axe, and its hard to believe that he wouldn't, one has to feel somewhat bad for Hoke. The guy has his dream job, and now its very likely going to be taken away from him. I can't imagine Hoke got much in the way of sleep last night.
That being said, when you don't perform, sometimes changes need to be made. I don't doubt for one second that Hoke brought 100% of his effort to the job every day, but if he does get the axe, I really wish things did work out for him. He seems like the perfect guy to lead Michigan. But at the end of the day, results matter. And he isn't getting them.

I felt that way at first, until I began to look at it from the standpoint of: at the end of the day, it IS a job...and it's no different than any other job. You don't meet your employer's standards, you'll be fired.

I think you are right. Hoke seemed to have some belief that the job was more than a job, more akin to a calling from a higher power, more of a destiny for him. And his belief was infectious. Until he demonstrated only downward progress. Now the concrete reality has come crashing down in that ultimately, it's a job. And if you dont do your job, you get canned.

This has to really suck for Nuss and his family even more they just moved to Ann Arbor this year and he had a pretty good coaching record before this season.

He would need to make a VERY convincing case to the next HC that the offense put on the field was not really of his choosing. Even then, it's not common for the incoming coach to retain someone to be one of his top two assistants.

gave him control of hiring his assistants then we've made the worst possible hire. Assembling their staff is a big part of a coach's job. Abdicating that responsibility is completely unheard of. And to give it to someone with Nussmeier's record here would show nothing less than a total disinterest in his new job.
People here love to make excuses for Nussmeier. New coordinators never bring their assistants with them. They always work with the existing staff. His playcalling has been okay. Reinstalling zone blocking was a good idea. His personnel decisions have been questionable. The results of his QB coaching have been disastrous. His overall results are simply terrible and that's the biggest reason.

Hoke had been better at his job. Our happiness over the last four years was dependent on how well he did his job, and he sucked at it. If any of you suck at your job, it probably doesn't affect me one bit (unless one of you is the guy who did my colonoscopy), but Hoke's suckiness does affect me.
We've said it a million times: Great guy, loyal guy, loves Michigan, shouldn't have been the coach here. We move forward today.

Like someone else said on here, many probably see Hoke as more than just a coach. It never is easy seeing someone you care about getting a heap of bad news. Also, I am sure that it will be a tough/uncomfortable hour for Hackett. I believe that he has a good relationship with Hoke. Being forced to give him the ax (based on the circumstances) will surely be, to say the least, uncomfortable.
I just hope that if Brady is, in fact, fired, the admin really does its best to bring in a top notch coach. I am very much afraid of the ND coach-carousel scenario post Lou Holtz. With two unsuccessful coaches, we are certainly on that track. Another bad hire, and it will really take a whole lot of digging to get us out of the abyss. I can't help but think about ND - Bob Davie, Tyrone Willingham, Big Tuna - and how much the bad coach pile up killed the ND brand. I really don't want that for our program. Time to shell out the $$$.

I'll be glad to see him go, provided that we hire a great replacement. But I won't be dancing on his grave.

The amount of money has--a little or a lot--ought never impact the level of feeling we have for them for good or ill.
If a person is an asshole, but is poor I would revile them as I would if he had a lot of money and was an asshole. How a person conducts themselves is what matters. This is what Martin Luther King Jr was referring to when he said he wanted his kids to be " judged by the content of their character". That's what matters. Not their gender, ethncitiy, or the amount of wealth they have or don't have.
