Hoke interview on ESPN radio

Submitted by Gameboy on

Brady Hoke discusses about the match this weekend with MSU on ESPN College Gameday radio show with Ivan Maisel.

It seems Matt Barrie, the host for this show who was missing yesterday is a UM alum/fan. He talked about not stopping the interview ( every other coach interviewed this season has lost their following game. Also wanted to ask Hoke about why he does not wear a headset.

ya know, we just have to bring a physical type of mentality to the game and make sure we get off our blocks.  Michigan State has a good defense, that'll be ready for us.  We just have to make sure we're physical and that we're ready to compete.

Neither Carr nor Schembechler divulged much in interviews, just like Hoke, who's following their example. I would have thought my point was obvious. Would you listen to Carr say nothing during an interview and say he's a meatball? Again I'm curious as to what that even means. Did the poster mean to say meathead or meat and potatoes type?

It's difficult to get all the way through a Hoke interview because Fort Schembechler has been reincarnated as Fort Hoke.  There will be a lot of words and platitudes, but he won't actually say much of anything.  The only thing that I really enjoy is when a reporter tries to nail Hoke down and rephrases questions he just asked, as though he is going to get a real answer.

Bottom line: Rosenberg, Snyder and Carty ruined the concept of "transparency" for as long as anyone from the "Michigan Coaching Tree" has the job.

You say that as if this wasn't already happening before the AANews academics story or the Freep thing. Go back to the mid 90s and look at presser transcripts. Or when OSU guys around the same time were jawing off the week before the Michigan game and our guys were giving out boilerplate playerspeak.

Fort Schembechler is as old as time. This is just Version 4.0, a lateral upgrade from aspiring high school English teacher Version 3.0.

interviews because he doesn't have anything to say. He is an honest hardworking coach in a job way above his head. Hopefully he will grow into it but at this level it they rarely do.

So you’re telling me you don’t like seeing these:

Personally, I am convinced Hoke is the wrong man for the job.
Hoke doesn’t wear a headset because he has nothing to offer.
Hoke was not on DB top five list. He was the default candidate because Brandon knew he would jump at the job. What we got was his least desireable [sic] candidate.
I have accepted that we are looking at three more years of mediocrity at which time DB terminates Hoke.

I think he’s that miserable man that sits across the aisle from me in Section 21.

You're right, he is in 'over his head'.  However, he was Coach of the Year in three different conferences in three years...including the Big Ten.  But just keep spouting that he's in over his head.  Eventually someone might believe you.

"Seems to me like it'd be pretty hard to go 25-8 (on the heels of a guy who had a losing 3-year record, no less) if the job were over your head."

Nope.  Hoke is the 3rd best coach on the Michigan staff.  Name one player who has developed into an NFL talent under Hoke.

Developed.  Under.  Hoke.

fans want in their football program. While it is true I have been hard on Hoke it is with good reason. He has shown me that he can play inferior opponents and beat them albeit just barely on many occasions. However, when playing more difficult opponents, he generally loses especially if playing away from home. What is his record against OSU,MSU,PSU, Iowa and Nebraska? It is no wonder that that DeAntonio wants him to stay at Michigan.

His lack of coaching is evident in the development of his players. The don't. They either stay where they are or regress. He protects himself and their failure to develop soley on experience and youth. How long will we hear this excuse?

What I know and the rest of the country knows is the program is at best average but wins enough to get into decent bowl games. Often this is as a result of the excellent fan base which travels and spends well.

As far as I am concerned this is not what I want in a MICHIGAN football team. Some are comfortable with medocrity. I refuse to accept it nor should those of us that want Michigan to be considered in the national championship playoffs. While he is coach you can forget about it.

You're making a lot of definitive statements about a guy that's been here 2.5 years.   When Hoke was hired, I don't recall many predicting us winning 25 games in the next 2.5 seasons, including a BCS bowl and unbeaten streak at home.  The much greater fear was that we wouldn't get out of the morass we were in at the time, getting thrashed by the likes of Mississippi State. I don't think too many would have complained about us being 1-1 against both OSU and MSU right now, given our record against them under his predecessor. People are shifting the goalposts now. Judge Hoke based on what you anticipated when he was hired, not based on how elevated your expectations became after the Sugar Bowl.

What is his record against OSU,MSU,PSU, Iowa and Nebraska?

We're 1-1 against all those except PSU (who we've played once). Is that bad? Well, RichRod went 0-3, 0-3, 0-3, and 0-2 against the first four (and didn't face Nebraska, thankfully), so all of those records seem to be an improvement.

By the way, why didn't you ask what his record was against Notre Dame or Northwestern?  If we win Saturday, can I assume you won't ask anymore what his record is against MSU?

when you were in school, or if you still are, are you happy with 75% in your class or on a test?

2011 - 84.6% winning percentage, almost all RR players.

2012 - 61.5% winning percentage.

Career winning percentage - 55.4%

The law of averages is catching up here.  The regression is already well underway.  Brady Hoke is a 500 coach in over a decade on the job.  The team looks like shit.  Not one player has developed into an NFL talent under Hoke.

I am not tolerant of mediocrity.  This is Michigan, RR lowered your expectations.  Relative to RR, Hoke is doing well.  Relative to all time history, Hoke is at the low end of Michigan coaching.  Fact.  How many other historic and/or big time programs missed out on first choices and hired a sub 500 (at the time) coach???

This is pointless.  I love the high and mighty who come here just to troll and spill inane judgements without an inkling of their hypocrisy.  It doesn't matter whether anyone here has accepted mediocrity because there is sweet fuck all we can do about it.  How many letters have you written to Brandon and the Regents demanding Hoke be fired?  If you haven't done it, then you too have accepted mediocrity so try to enjoy some football and get back on your prozac, everyone liked you better when you were on it.

I was supportive but wary. He implied that the cupboard was bare and to some extent it was. After three years of recruiting he was dumped and Hoke in his first year won 11 games with RR players. In his second year, he did not do so well even with a 1 1/2 of his mixed in with RR recruits. He wasn't even close to a Big 10 championship. This year he has won one difficult game against ND. The rest of the teams were nothing more than patsies and he found a way to lose to one of them.

If he loses to MSU we are definitely out of any reasonable chance to win the Big Ten. That will make it three years he has not been competitive in the BIg Ten. What will be your position then? Give him three more years?

I REALLY want him to succeed. But when at look at the line play on both sides of the ball with highly rated recruits it is now obvious to me he is not up to the job. Remember, when hired his strength was his background is line play. I cannot remember crappier line play than what I am witnessing this year.

Not to worry DB will not dump him like he did with RR. Hoke is a MICHIGAN man and apparently that is all that counts.

After Akron, UConn, and PSU, I think it is very reasonable to have the discussion about Hoke. I think being overly sold on either side of the argument is not appropriate but I think the OP brings up some legitimate concerns. I had been blindly loyal to Hoke because he brought back the brand (so to speak) but PSU raised doubts in me for the first time. He seemed over his skis.....just saying. This weekend will be a good sample. A bye week to prepare for a division rival is a great test. If they look soft (as they have for 4 straight games), the coach should be questioned. Not calling for his head, but the honeymoon will officially be over.
