Why is this post getting negged? Nothing bad about it at all.

No, I believe in a playbook that is more complicated than Tecmo Bowl.

I wondered the same thing. I upvoted it to "informative" because that is what it is. People are probably down voting it because it mentions Devin's going to the draft after the 2013 season.
November 26th, 2012 at 1:39 PM ^
This whole redshirt deal is on richrod. I think he wanted to see if devin panned out to decide whether or not he'd try for the redshirt. Which I really hope isn't true.

Didn't Denard and Tate both get hurt in the Bowling Green game that year anyway?
November 26th, 2012 at 2:59 PM ^
Tate wasn't hurt. He was still in the dog house and RR thought he might have to go the year without him.... thus the PT for Devin.
November 26th, 2012 at 3:01 PM ^
You're thinking of the UConn game.
November 26th, 2012 at 3:18 PM ^
I don't know man. I specifically remember Tate playing in a game in 2010 and limping a lot in it.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:20 PM ^
In the UConn (first) game, Tate was in the doghouse. Gardner played -- I think -- one series with no passing attempts when Denard got banged once. Denard went the rest of the way.
In the Bowling Green (Sept. 25) game, all three played. Denard got dinged, and Devin came in, and finished a touchdown drive. Not sure if Devin threw for a td, or ran for a td, or both. But it was the one and only time he got significant p.t., apart from the brief and insignificant appearance v. UConn. Tate came into the Bowling Green game later, was also dinged, and was seen limping. It was a weird game. "Dissatisfying" can't be the right word for a 65-21 (?!) win, and the offensive numbers were amazing. Everybody just left that game with as many questions as answers.
Later on, I remembered that a few of the Bowling Green plays were some of the very few where I really liked what I saw with Gardner until this year! Because he's been underwhelming in some others in 2011, and showed almost nothing in all of his spring games.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:25 PM ^
I believe he also played (very briefly) in the ND game that year. As in the UConn game, it was just a brief injury fill-in.

That's obviously what happened, snoopblue. He didn't expect Denard to blow up the way he did in 2010. Everyone was clamoring for a red shirt to separate the two by two years instead of one. People were pissed when RR didn't do it, especially when Denard turned out the way he did.
November 26th, 2012 at 2:41 PM ^
Is that because there is a secret rule that we have to offer all redshirts a fifth year?
November 26th, 2012 at 1:39 PM ^
This is great and glorious news for the Michigan faithful, at least until Devin has a bad game, then the Michigan faithful will throw Gardner under the Shane Morris bus.
November 26th, 2012 at 2:46 PM ^
Soon to be followed by the Jayru Campbell bus.
November 26th, 2012 at 4:27 PM ^
November 26th, 2012 at 3:02 PM ^
they'll not only throw Devin under the Shane Morris bus, they'll back up and run over him several more times for good measure.
And when DG has an open path to the end zone but gets caught from behind on the 5-yard line, the faithful will tow the Denard Robinson bus out of the junkyard and throw DG under it too.

Please stop with that BS. The Heisman Trophy is overrated anyway. Fuck the Heisman Trophy. I'd rather get another Big Ten trophy, which we haven't seen since 2004.

November 26th, 2012 at 3:37 PM ^
Where did I even appear to say that? I'm saying the Big Ten title is way more important that some stupid individual award that doesn't even go to the best player in the NCAA anymore. The stupid award now goes to the RB or QB with the best stats, which is the dumbest thing ever.

This is the only bit of semi-good news since we held a 21-17 lead in the game. I'm glad to know the coaches are sending in the redshirt request. I seriously doubted their willingness to do it. In fact, had Bellomy not imploded, I'm not sure the coaches would have sent in that request.

November 26th, 2012 at 4:03 PM ^
Since you brought it up, he also doesn't have eyes. So "believing it when he sees it" could also be an issue.

We all assume he will be both a great QB in 2013 and want to stay at Michigan beyond that. What if he guides Michigan to a fantastic season next year, gets high draft grades, and bolts for the NFL?
I suppose it wouldn't be that bad, I love to see Wolverines being drafted, but the good news should be tempered with a small hint of reality, and the reality is that we want Gardner to stay more than he might want to stay.
That being said, it's all good news that having him for 2 years while we develop Morris is even an option. I, for one, thought it might not be.
November 26th, 2012 at 3:17 PM ^
If Devin doesn't stay a 5th year only because he got so awesome that the NFL wants him, I'd be OK with that.
November 26th, 2012 at 3:21 PM ^
November 26th, 2012 at 3:28 PM ^
Great to hear. I'll believe it when it is in writing, but this is a huge benefit for the team and player development. Having a RS sophomore Shane Morris taking over for a 5th-year Devin Gardner would be optimal.

I am surprised that they are just getting around to this. I thought I read a while back that they were pursuing this course of action.
