Hoke deserves a graceful exit

Submitted by Rodriguesqe on

Everyone is pissed. Everyone is frustrated.

I am not saying you shouldn't be, or to reconsider.

We all know what almost certainly is coming at the end of the season.

But the next time you want to pesronally insult Hoke, consider that he is a true Michigan Man that bleeds blue. He may have failed at his job, but it wasn't due from lack of effort or desire.

And in Michigan's hour of need, when our top choices used Michigan's offer just to get more money from someone else, it was Hoke who hopped on a bus before even discussing his pay.

He might not be a great coach but he appears to be a good pereson. He is losing his dream job. It sucks. If you need to vent your frustations with him, maybe we can at least not resort to such vitriol or RCMB-esque lowest common denominator personal inults?

gifted the job. Nobody else wanted to come here. we had offers out and nobody wanted to take the job. Of course Hoke jumped on the offer. This will be his highest coaching job and from here, I doubt he will be a head coach again, not even a coordinator, back to a position coach he goes. The Michigan man concept is retarded. The Michigan man is someone who is old and has a lot of money that graduated from Michigan with no real sense for how a sport is supposed to be played but has money so has opinions.

Firing someone in the middle of the season for doing a poor job is not disgraceful. Who in college football has been fired disgracefully?? Fair or not, college football coaches have to succeed quickly and consistently today, in part because they are paid so much. If they don't, they are replaced.

noone makes 4 million dollars a year because they are nice. I would walk into his office tell him clean it out your fired plain and simple. While there at it walk by brandons office as well. Anyone else think Hokes fired by tomorrow? SoMONE? Anyone??

...he's eventually let go, can we all agree that he's going to leave the roster in much better shape than he found it? Not the best legacy, but mos def not the worst.

It also had a monstrous crater where the incoming OL were supposed to be.  That was a ticking time bomb that was going to affect whoever took over after RRod.

Not saying Hoke should stay, just saying that he absolutely deserves credit for coming into a very difficult situation and successfully re-stocking the pond

Re-building the roster was no small feat, and Hoke and his staff have hit it out of the park on that score.  Even if they are not here next year, they have laid the foundation for the next staff to succeed with.

Yet somehow I'm getting the feeling that very few of us will remember that for long and give Hoke and his staff the credit they are due if someone else comes in and succeeds immediately next season.

I agree with the OP.

But as a side-point, the future depends on it too.  Rodriguez was ran out on a rail.  People posted pictures of his departure with his son in the car on this website in celebration.

That looks very, very ugly now.  So let's learn from that.

Go into Brandon's office and negotiate a modification to his contract where he resigns now but still gets his buyout. It would let Nuss have a shot to show what he can do, and would give Michigan time to evaluate all of its options. It would serve everyone's interest.

What other options do we have? Do you really want Hoke around until December/January running this place into a deeper hole? You really want Brandon to start another "process" in Mid-January? Sorry, do not want.

Nuss is a young coach who did win a couple of NCs at Alabama as an OC. Let's see if the offense's struggles are Hoke's fault or Nuss's. If the offense still sucks then we know he isn't the guy. If he turns it around and steadies the ship then he may be the guy. Let's find out.

I don't think either Harbaugh is walking through that door.

just because who else are you going to choose... it's either him or Mattison, and I could see there being greater upside to choosing the younger up and comer to see how he does in the role.  But, my sense is no amount of coaching from the current staff will elevate this team to an acceptable level, and everyone including Nuss should be gone by season's end.  I know it's Nuss' first year, but it's getting harder and harder to not think there was a reason Saban didn't fight to keep him.

@Ike613 - I agree. The biggest problems seem to be: 1. HC strategically weak and old school 2. OL can't block worth a damn 3. Gardner is a shell of himself and lost all confidence - needs to be converted back to WR None of these things are Nuss's fault but they point directly to Hoke. Why he didn't fire Funk last year is beyond me but I would have no problem getting rid of Hoke and letting Nuss's run the show the rest of the year. At least we will know iif they improve that Hoke was really a bigger problem than we realized.

We are all human, we all fail. Hoke loves this place, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he doesn't break down completely WHEN (not if) they let him go.

He tried his hardest, the best way he knew how. I can say one thing with certainty...if there was ever a UM coach I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt put everything into his job that he could, it would be Brady Hoke. I feel terribly for him, but it is time. He will always be a part of the storied Michigan football program, and will always be my coach...he is not what this team or program needs right now.

I don't think Hoke will be around next year, but whoever the Coach is, Hoke or the Next Man Up will be BIG Coach of the Year. This team will be ready by next fall. Stout front seven on D and a maturing O line. Ty and Green in a backfield with a game manager, Speight or Morris will do. The DB's are solid as will be our playmakers on the outside. As long as the new Coach plays power football the players will fit the scheme and get 10 plus wins. If we change back to spread tempo, we will be doomed for another 5 years.

We do NOT have to be looking at another painful transition that is going to take years to bear fruit.  One thing for which we can all be grateful is that Hoke & Co. have nicely re-built the roster.

As long as we don't bring in someone with a radically different system, there is no reason an incoming staff would not be able to succeed immediately.

Perhaps we will look back at Hoke the same way we look back at Bump Elliott - good guy, good recruiter, players loved him...but we needed Bo to come in and put Michigan football back on the map

That's the funniest thing I've heard all day. We are so far away from winning ten games and playing power football!!! Anytime we play a team with a pulse we get our ass handed to us. In 8 quarters against teams with a pulse we have 3 points. And next year we are just gonna start running over people. It's not that we are young. It's leadership and team chemistry . There is absolutely NONE.

Typical overreaction.

The program was in much worse shape in the 50s and 60s. They eventually found the light at the end of the tunnel.

Teams go through down periods. Everyone is losing their fucking mind because not many people are around that experienced the last time things were this bad--or worse. At least they don't post on the internet.

So no elite program has ever gone through a down period and come back?

Texas was mediocre in the 90s and sucks now.

Alabama was mediocre for much of the 2000s.

Oklahoma went through 3 coaches in the 90s before finally getting their guy in Bob Stoops.

Want me to keep going?
