a great school.  However, the debate is over, the data is clear, Michigan is the best.  USNWR has us rated higher in more categories than Stanford.  Then you throw in athletics, forget about it.  Stanford cant even sell out a home football game.

I'm sorry, but that argument cannot be made, let alone saying "the data is clear." They are top 5 undergrad, # 3 law school, # 1 business school.  I guess I don't know where our 5 person pharmacy school stacks up, but let's not lose credibility by 100% concluding something that 0 people outside of the city of Ann Arbor would agree with.

I love UMich.  It's great. It has taught me to be an objective thinker.

Yes.

A great coaching pedigree. Enthusiasm, a great work ethic.

He's won everywhere he's coached, and he's well-respected by other coaches, high school coaches, and players.

And he currently has commitments from the top 6 Minnesota recruits in-state, which is something Brewster and Mason never did.

The dude is a solid, hard-working coach, which frankly is good enough. He'll turn that team into a 7-8 victory squad on average, with the occasional breakthrough year like 2003 for Minnesota. Any Minnesota fan expecting more than that with the division they're in is being delusional.

hope i dont offend any "arrogant" types, but arrogance is the height of insecurity.

Michigan will win when they deserve to win. im a fan of earning wins and ass kicking my opponents.

i dont remember the last time my thoughts about how good i was ever won me something.

let Notre Dame be that way. not Michigan.

who you are. Michigan is arrogant not as a defense mechanism but as a product of arrogance being wired into our collective DNA. Just one more reason why we are so special.

Thinking you're bad helped you win then? Or indifference led you to victory right? Garbage. There's nothing wrong with thinking you're good. There's something wrong with being content in thinking you're good, and telling everyone you're good, and not performing. Hoke is saying "this is Michigan" with regards to recruiting. Guess what? He's performing. Hoke is saying "this is Michigan" with regard to rebuilding. We'll see if that belief is followed by performance. So far he has delivered. He's created a buzz and instilled confidence in the team and recruits. I haven't heard of one complaint, except by the media, of Hoke being anything but personable and inspiring. These are not characteristics of arrogance. I'm leaning more towards confidence than arrogance at this point.

Arrogance is a vice, and an ugly one at that. As someone else said above, the distinction between confidence and arrogance is important. As a Michigan fan and alum I like to think I'm confident and not the least bit afraid to explain why, as well as being very happy and feeling truly blessed. But nothing justifies arrogance.

And it was Hoke who droped the A word, and I think that was a bad move. I wouldn't really put this on the Star Tribune as getting all upset about it or anything (as it seems some people are doing). I love coach Hoke, I bought my Hokeamania! t-shirt shortly after the Mattison hire and have just been happier and happier ever since thanks to the recruiting and the pointing and all the sunshine and rainbows and such. But I do think he should maybe back away from the arrogance, or at least consider a symantic shift toward confidence or something similar. I think it would help too if instead of just saying "We're Michigan" you add what that means. Why do you think recruits are still interested in the school after a few bad years? Because we're Michigan, the winningest program of all time, steeped in tradition, the home of the biggest stadium in the country, a superb educational institution, the home of Woodson and Howard and Harmon and Brady (etc, etc), etc, etc, etc. That's not arogant, that's the truth, those are the facts. Why wouldn't they want to come? Anyway...

I would like to add that there is also a difference between being humble and being passive aggressive.  Like arrogance/confidence, many people can't seem to grasp the difference.  Also, Hoke didn't say that he thinks that we should be arrogant because we are Michigan.  He  was basically saying that he doesn't care whether people think it is arrogant that he answers a question with "this is Michigan", nor should he.  The simple fact that there are articles like this shows how much of a behometh Michigan is in the college football landscape.  Conversely, how else is he supposed to answer "hey coach, how are you guys doing se well recruiting this year"? The answer is obvious and I would posit that it has nothing to do with the win totals of the last 3 years. "This is Michigan" is the truth, even if it is hard for some to swallow.

Article on the same topic. (about halfway down the page). The hate is so tangible, so palpable, you can almost sense how much teeth grinding there was while he was writing this.

It's glorious and I love it. Just a few more weeks before arrogance reigns supreme again.

EDIT: It's all the way down on the first page. (This guy gets it)

Hoke is simply stating what needs to be said to re-establish belief and confidence within the program.  Anything less says we are satisfied with what's been happening in recent years.  The fact is, Michigan is NOT like most other schools.  We have stronger academic programs on the whole, many distinguished alumni and faculty, an incredible state-of-the-art campus, a rich tradition, and superb leadership.  Being an alum of Michigan DOES mean a lot.  If that's arrogance, we're guilty.

Guys, he's right. We should take a page from Minnesota's book and go from arrogance to complete and utter irrelevance.
