Hoke Appreciation Thread

Submitted by Clarence Beeks on

If decisions are made in the Michigan administration using any degree of reason, that should be the last time we see Brady Hoke wear maize and blue on a football field. He cared a lot, seemed like a nice enough guy, said many of the right things, but just couldn't get the job done. Time to move on for both sides.

Fire Brandon first.... he was the one who hired him. It's not Hoke's fault he was given his dream job.

ps-0-2 in conference play for the first time in 47 years.

Does our secondary and even the linebacker play is failing! The entire team has turned into a tire fire due to these coaches. Given our raw potential talent, there is no way in hell we should be the worse team in the B1G! Something is wrong and his name is Hoke!

Thanks Hoke for not kicking a field goal in a 100% lost game to let Notre Dame end the series on a shut out and our only shut out since like 30 years ago.

Thanks Hoke for keeping Funk and having the most TFL's allowed last year.

Thanks Hoke for having the most turn overs in all of D1 this year!

Thanks Hoke for not hyping up the players and can't figure out how to win any road games.

PS: Penn State has a new head coach that inherited a program that has a never before seen (SMU doesn't count, they got a pure death penalty) scholarship reduction and still managed to beat Rutgers!!

Shall I continue?

He shows up at games

He wears the right colors on game day

He gets lots of star recruits

He attracts defensive coaching geniuses

He holds very good practices- very good I hear

He deals with Boo boos promptly (but not head knocks- so I hear)

He is really trying- because I heard him say this

Who are these defensive coaching geniuses?  As time has gone by it seems Mattison is being exposed as just being "That guy who coached Ray Lewis for one year and let Urban's offense win a national championship" and nothing more.    He is perhaps the most overated assistant in football.

2011 was all smoke and rainbow pooping and nothing more.

Sadly I agree.  I'm not sure that Mattison is the most overrated assistant in football, but this notion of him being a "defensive genius" has to stop.  He did a great job in 2011, but since then, the defense has been fine, not a destroyer of worlds.  If firing Hoke meant losing Mattison as well, that would be somewhat disappointing, because he's not terrible, but it's not as if he's irreplaceable.

^^ THIS

I'm sick and tired of "He graduated all the Seniors" "He's a Michigan Man" bullshit.

I want wins. Do I want to cheat to achieve these wins? Hell no. But if we do it the right way, and recruit to a powerhouse football Univeristy consistent fucking 9 win seasons are the bare minimum to ask for.

If we overpay crappy coaches, somehow still manage to rake in the 2nd best recruiting classes year after year, how are we not averaging 9 win seasons?

Blows my freaking mind.

Hoke is giving his all and is running the program the right way. The famous saying around here is that people would rather lose the right way than win the wrong way. Well this is what that looks like and I am glad Hoke is our coach. The results may stink but he should get at the very least the rest of this season as well as the next one, and I think a strong case could be made for keeping Hoke around for 2016 as well. He is a great man and we NEED to be patient.

We're extremely young this year, so we can't honestly expect Hoke to field a decent team. there's just way too much youth on this team this year. Even if we lose out and end up 2-10, it's not Hoke's fault as we're just so young. Now next year, we'll be starting Shane for the first time all year. First year starters normally don't do well (granted there are exceptions, but Hoke isn't really responsible for next year's season either, plus we'll still be young. The first real season we will be able to judge Hoke is following the 2016 season. IF we're still struggling then yes I'll join you all in calling for his head then, but until then, Hoke DESERVES and NEEDS our support.

I'm loving your refreshing combination of naivete and sports ignorance.  Gandhi would be harsher on Hoke---and with better football acumen.  Now if you are trolling, then you must have started drinking about noon.

how I'm ingorant. This team is extremely young. True or False? Next year we are starting a brand new QB. True or False? Both of those statements are true, and both of those statements do not lead to good football teams. Just because you are completely ignorant and unable to be patient enough to give Hoke the time he needs doesn't mean the rest of us are. If you want evidence, let's take a look at RR. He was a good and competent coach that was ran out of town. Now he's taken a program that isn't even close to being steeped in the prestige that we have and just beat the #2 team in the nation. Forgive me if I don't want to repeat the act of firing a good coach before he has had the proper chance to build his program.

PS: When in the history of the internet has showing support for the current regime been considered trolling? That's just a dumb statement on your part man. I'm an alum who loves Michigan and honestly feels that Hoke deserves at least finishing out the 2016 season.

You're entitled to your opinion, but this guy has taken a team with a ton of talent and turned it into hot garbage. The team has gotten worse each year and there's no end in sight. We still have to play MSU. Can we expect to see you posting in Brady's defense after that one?

I forgot to point out some agreement with you. Running Rich Rod out was dumb, but he had a record of success everywhere. even here he got better each year, though obviously it's easy to improve when year one is 3 and 9. Brady has been mediocre everywhere, and i don't think because we fired one guy and he moved on to success that means everyone will. I'd bet good money that 2011 is far and away the best year Hoke ever has.

Apologies but there is no way I can view you as being anything other than a trollolololo. No sentient being can watch what this program has become (getting worse every year) and draw the conclusions you are. But that is some damned good trolling son

I just have a different view. While wins are nice, I believe the true value of a coach is preparing his player's to become successful and productive members of society. I believe Hoke has an amazingly positive impact on the men that don the maize and blue helmet and that means much more to me than a win over Rutgers, Utah, Michigan State, or Ohio State. If we become perennial loser's, yeah it would not be ideal, but I'd prefer to lose and have our guys be men of honor, class, and integrity, then let's say a Ray Rice, Pacman Jones, or Ritchie Incognito.

Through last season and through this season. But there has been zero player development. We have a senior 4 star QB and we cannot even move the ball on teams which have little talent. Many of our Juniors are not playing well and they were highly rated recruits. It all comes down to coaching! Bo did not make any excuses when he took over a mediocre team from Bump in '69 and turned them into instant winners! Hoke is doing the opposite because he lacks the skill sets of a great coach! Michigan just needs to keep trying and not stick with an average or poor coach for years!

starting for them and Arizona is undefeated. They are alone uptop in the Pac-12 standings after the crazy day today.  They beat a vaunted Oregon at Oregon.  Youth excuse does not fly anymore, not with 4th year under Hoke.

It's not Hoke's fault that RR recruited so poorly, and it's certainly not his fault that Carr told everyone everyone to abandon ship after his retirement. That's on Carr and RR. If it weren't for their failures, maybe Hoke would be in a good enough position to give us the results we want. As it is though, were simply too young, and the on-field results are not an  indication of Hoke or his ability to develop our players.

you obviously have zero understanding of this game called football. Hoke has only shown himself to be an awful coach, and if you you cannot see that, then you do not understand what you are looking at

I'm tired of hearing how Lloyd Carr screwed over Rich Rod and how Lloyd was fired and blah blah blah. First Lloyd retired: Mike Hart and some of the other seniors like Henne, Kraus, and Long knew Lloyd would be retired after 2007 regardless of record. According to one of the seniors Lloyd had Parkinson's.

2) Lloyd wasn't encouraging players to leave Rich Rods team but he would give honest advice to a former player. Rich Rod's teams were awful here as well and they'd have a ton of turnovers and penalties every game. Rich Rod did more in his first year at Arizona than he ever did at Michigan.

The first thing Rich Rod said to the team at the first workout was, "ya'll lost Michigans edge and we're hear to bring it back". Yea the 2007 team lost to App State (twice defending national champs IAA), lost to an Oregon team that would have won the Pac 10 had Dennis Dixon remained healthy, won the next 8 games, had to play a freshman QB at Wisconsin, and beat Florida in Florida.

Point is can't blame Rich Rod now but you sure as fuck can't blame Lloyd. Lloyd was a great man and a great coach. Carr wouldn't screw over Rich Rod. Rod didn't do himself any favors by passing all over every tradition Michigan had. He needed to make it his own team by changing some things but embracing others and he didn't do this nor did he play defense. Hell his offense didn't do shit against Wiscy, MSU, OSU.

All that being said Brady can't get out of AA quick enough. I don't care how much players like him these kids need a coach that crawls up their asses, pitches a tent and live there until we win some games and develop talent. There was no excise for Rich Rod to go 3-9 and there really isn't one for Hoke to go 2-10 or 3-9. This is big boy business and its time for Big Boy to be out.

Losing the "right way" entails being competitive...and Rutgers is the first BCS team we've been competitive against this year. That's sad.

Losing the "right way" also means noticing when the fucking clock runs twice after an illegal motion penalty is called in the final two minutes of a game when you're down one score.

1931

October 5th, 2014 at 12:14 AM ^

Losing doesn't have a damn thing to do with competitiveness. Losing the right way is not cutting corner's or taking shortcuts. If losing the right way meant being competitive then Urban Meyer losing to VT earlier this year was losing the right way. Is that what you want? I thought not. Sure the results are pretty, but I'll take Hoke everyday of the week over Meyer, Dantonio, Saban, Miles, Mulen, and just about every other SEC coach.

DId we look incompetent? Sure. But we didn't cut corners and 2-10 records all day over Saban's 3 NC's won the wrong way.
