Hockey tournament update: #1 seed Miami loses.

Submitted by mfan_in_ohio on

UNH beats Miami 3-1 after an empty-net goal.  That's the second #1 seed to fall.  They will probably complain about getting sent to New Hampshire to play UNH.  Considering they got sent to last year's Frozen Four, they can suck on some karma.

is it bad of me to cheer against the conference in tournament play, especially like when I screamed in joy when that uppity prick Rico got an empty netter scored on his team to end the game?

Go non-descript-feline-mascots from the northeast.

Every time I see them replay the game where they blew a 2 goal lead in the final minute, then lost in OT to BU in the FINAL...

I seriously jump with glee. Even though I know what happens, it's so satisfying. Especially in retrospect after they stole our bid, etc.

I watched that game.  It made me happy.

Currently, WMU leading Denver 1-0 after 2 periods in the Midwest regional, for the chance to play NoDak in the regional final, after their 6-0 thrashing of RPI.  Yale and UM-D tied at 0 10 minutes in.

I'll at least pull for a little bit. One they're playing Denver, who I hate. Second, if they win they play NoDak, who I hate even more. Third if we play them in the Frozen Four, we owe them like Michael owed Salazzo in the Godfather after he tried to take a shot at the Don.

And is it me, or does the way Yale's bigger mesh on the underarm part of their jerseys make it look like the whole jersey is made of that and hence, really cheap? Damn you HD with your crystal clear high resolution....

now up 2-0 on Denver, with about 16 left.  You can get the gametracker from the NCAA bracket page (http://www.ncaa.com/brackets/icehockey-men/d1/2011) if you're interested and I believe it's also on ESPN3.

EDIT: Tied 2-2, about 2.5 min. left in the third.

EDIT 2:  OT!  Denver came an inch from winning with 2 seconds left when a puck trickled past Kuhn and went JUST wide.  But, OT.

EDIT 3:  Duluth 5 Yale 1, after 2.  Duluth looks to get the first Frozen Four berth this season.  Merrimack leads Notre Dame 2-1 afer the first.  Someone from ND hit someone from Merrimack early on and it was nasty.  The 'Mack player was hunched over playing the puck and his head ended up slamming into that little ledge between glass and boards.  There was no penalty called on the play.  The 'Mack player was hit in the side, but he turned out of it just before he was hit.  And Denver/WMU going into OT#2, still tied at 2-2.

Good riddance !

That's what you get for that no goal call last year in the regional final in Fort Wayne !

I was there.  First of all, the game was in Bridgeport -- 30 minutes from New Haven than their "OWN BUILDING."  (AHA's Fairfield calls it home, if it'll make you feel better).  Second, Yale got incredibly jobbed by the CCHA refs.  Down 2-0 (Yale's own fault that far), they got a goalie interfernce penalty for getting pushed into the goalie.  Yale gets one back, and almost immediately afterward, their best player this month gets a 5 min-major/game misconduct for a legal hit.  UMD player embellished the fall, I think, and sold the blow to the head angle.  Replays showed no head contact.  Anyways, UMD gets two on the ensuing, one on a 5-on-3 owing to another iffy call.  Yale put in two in the third, but it wasn't enough to get them out of the deep deep hole in which the refs put them.

you morons make it sound like miami somehow orchestrated the outcome of last year's game. if anything, you should direct your venom towards the the folks who refeered last year's game.

The pairwise is everything.  They even chased BC out west because they didn't want to bump Northeast host New Hampshire up one seed from where the pairwise had them.  So instead, Miami has to play an away game at UNH's second home  (or at least a place they play as a home team during the year).

I can't bring myself to hold what happened last year in the regional finals against Redhawks. It was the officials that screwed the pooch, not the players. Same with the whole dynasty thing. That was way more amusing than enraging anyway.

No, the reason I hate the Miami (of Ohio) hockey team starts and ends with their coach. With Rick Comley now retired, I think I can safely say that there is no college hockey coach I think less of than Enrico Blasi.
