1 win from winning the gongshow, beat the # 3 team in America by 4 goals, 3 wins from the frozen four, 5 wins from the national championship

I am out of state as well, but I get the game on FCSA which I am guessing is Fox College Sports Atlantic? I pay for the extra sports package from Comcast though, so I'm not sure if that helps you.

Nice time to be peaking. Too bad we're up against a hot ND team, led by Mr. Kryptonite himself, Jeff Jackson. Still, one win and the streak lives.

Michigan could still lose quite easily; nothing is guaranteed. But to be in this position at all is a total shock. And if they win, they are a red-hot #4 seed nightmare for someone like Minnesota, who is not playing their best hockey right now.

Yes I agree that this is definitely not a foregone conclusion. Part of me thinks that Michigan is so hot right now that no one can stand in their way.

But I've had my heart broken enough times to know better. And of course it is ND, so anything can happen. I'm still stinging from that 2008(?) Frozen Four game.

I mean, recordwise it's an easy answer.  Michigan wouldn't deserve a 3 seed.  But I think Minnesota, or any other #1 seed, deserves not to have to face Michigan in the first round.  I guess in the hockey tournament, you don't have any bad teams.  I've just been thinking over the past couple days how frustrated I'd be if we had to play a North Dakota or BC in the first round if the situation was reversed.

Either way, not our problem this year.  Just win today and we'll have fun finding out what happens.

Michigan broke my heart when I was a student at Michigan many times...the first round NCAA vs. Air Force when their goalie decided he wanted to become Patrick Roy for the night. 2. NCAA game vs. MIAMI when we got a lot of shitty calls and last but not least 3. Minnesota Deluth championship game.

BEAT ND! we will win the national championship if we can win this game...calling it.

is in Ohio. Why would someone want to cross that border?

Grand Rapids is in Michigan, and Michigan is a much better place.  A little further away from Ann Arbor, but much much closer for me (and yes, I'm being selfish here---I can potentially go to both games at VanAndel Arena in GR, a 70-minute drive.  OTOH, especially on a holiday weekend, the 3+ hour drive each way to Toledo would relegate me to watching Michigan on the tube.)

For anyone not familiar with VanAndel Arena, it's a good place to watch a hockey game.  Not only that, but conveniently located nearby are some good brewpubs...

A few things

  • Scored one of only two shorthanded goals Miami has allowed all season
  • Only team to put up 5+ on Miami

I noticed though that when we got up by 4 we became a lot less crisp, not applying as much pressure, and in the 3rd we put up 3 penalties in a row, including a silly too many men on the ice penalty on a bad switch.  I suppose these concerns are mitigated when you're up by 4 goals; that is to say they become issues because you've already played so well you find yourself up pretty far.

No especially about it. We've been mathematically out of the tournament for a long time; winning the CCHA is the only way to get in, and even then our Pairwise number wouldn't be close. At least in '10 our wins actually moved us up into the PWR range (a loss would still have eliminated us). This year Michigan is barely even a "Team Under Consideration," and only crossed that barrier last week.

Michigan hockey fans basically haven't even needed to look at the Pairwise numbers in months; since January the situation has basically been that either Michigan will win the CCHA tournament or be eliminated. And the former seemed awfully improbable back when Michigan couldn't even assemble a two-game winning streak.

We were a three because, combined with our better record, our win streak that launched us to the CCHA title raised our Pairwise rating into the 3-seed range. If we had lost to Northern we would have dropped out of the tourney. It's all math. This weekend we have zero chance at a three seed, because mathematically we cannot jump over the teams ahead of us.

The selection process uses strictly math for the 16 teams to get into the tourney.  After that they can seed, and have seeded teams differently to avoid inter-conference match-ups and to boost attendance in certain regionals, etc.  Assuming we win today, depending upon who the #1 seed is our regional I would not be shocked if they made us a #3 not to match us up with a #1 seed.  It is going to be a pretty big disadvantage for some #1 seed to have to play UM with a home crowd behind it and being the hottest team in college hockey.  They would probably stick one of the other auto qualifiers into our regional that are just as low as us as the #4 seed.  Hopefully we can pull off the win today and find out!  Go Blue!!!!

False. Seeding "bands" are mathematically set in stone. If you are in the 3-seed band (9-12th ranked by pairwise) that will not and has never changed. What they can do is change matchups within bands to avoid intra-conference rematches and to help attendance. A 3 seed will always be a 3 seed, though, and a 4 will always remain a 4.

Honestly, I would be ecstatic if we just win tomorrow and make the tourney. Any tourney wins after tomorrow would be gravy on a season that was on life support 5 weeks ago.

I had a great time today at the game. It didn't seem to be anywhere close to sold out. If I show up before the game and go to the box office, there should be tickets available right? Or should I just order some online?
