I'd suggest Newport Pub. On Newport/Southport in Lakeview.
Might call to make sure, but I've actually watched a lot of Wings games there, and its a UM place.
I would say duffys is a good idea. I go to Tin Lizzies a lot as its a Wings bar (althought its a State bar too, but they havent shown their face in their since "The Sweep.") I wouldn't suggest Newport though, i live across with it and haven't been very impressed with it as a bar or as being a legit bar (as in they just put a flag out there for money).
rockit - river north and wrigleyville are the official michigan bars in chicago- they contribute to the alumni club supporting scholarships and more.
duffy refuses to give anything even though they mkae gobsof money off us.
next year expect to see a number of additional official bars
please please support the official bars- they actually care aobut michigan not just your money
Uhh, I would, but Rockit River North had the Michigan game on two- TWO- televisions for NCAA tourney round one game. No way in HELL they'll have the hockey game on a Thursday night. Yes, they give the AA money. However, the scene at both places is "meh" at best. The one in Wville, I've gone to, and thought "why did we come to a bar? This is like watching at one of our apartments/condos" (me and my friends). I know Arturo, who's the head of ops, is a M grad, and he genuinely cares- he apologized for the debacle for the NCAA tourney, but still, if you want best odds of a.) people watching game, b.) sound being on, Duffy's is probably your spot this Thursday.
Oh, and let me add this: the alumni association was pimping the hell out of Rockit River North being the official game watching place for the NCAA bball tourney. Thank god I called them and found out they were only going to have 2 tv's on the game. I took off of work (as did three friends) to watch the game, and we were originally going to go there.
Arturo, the guy who is their head of operations, wrote me a really cool email afterward, and he explained the situation and apologized (I'd emailed to ask before calling), and I felt like he handled it really well- they had an event that day in the upstairs, so they couldn't open it up to watching the game. However, that being said, I'd be surprised if they'd have the hockey game on this Thursday-- thursday night on Hubbard= usually a lot of people/foot traffic, especially with the weather warming up, and Rockit is really more of "trendy" type of spot (comparatively) than Duffy's. I can't see them pissing off the normal clientele by showing a college hockey game with the sound on.
unfortunately, i have to agree that this thursday will probably not be the best night to see it at rockit- they are having a private party for the whole river north bar. working on saturday night.
as you can tell from arturo they are just getting their shit together on some of the non-football stuff- we had to call and alert them to the big ten tourney- they had missed out on the illinois game.
they will continue to get better- also i spoke to people who watche the duke game at both the river north and wrigleyville and they say it was packed and great- much better food and no sticking to the floor like you do at duffy's.
keep your eyes out- as i said i believe there will be 3 or 4 more "official bars" this fall-
P.S. If you are w/ the Chicago Alumni chapter, other than the game watching bars, congrats on putting together awesome programming. The Taste of AA event should be awesome!
I have tried to do the Rockits for games this year but the River North location often doesn't even bother putting games on (they looked at me like I was crazy for wanting to watch the Big Chill) and the atmosphere is mostly non-affiliated creepy divorced Merc traders and tourists. The Wrigley location is slightly better but still, at best, gives off the vibe of staid married alumni watching and occasionally cheering. I like the fact that the Rockit group is owned by an alumn, but they just aren't sports bars or places geared toward recent graduates and aren't great places to watch games. Next year, I would try to solicit places that have more of a Duffy's-type atmosphere at and until then I will continue going there to watch games when I want to be a part of a rowdy and engaged crowd.
Not really a Michigan bar but I've seen some Blackhawks games at Emmit's on the corner of Milwaukee and Halsted and it was pretty exciting. Plus they have good Irish alcohol.
