Hockey: AJ Treais suspended one game by CCHA

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) today announced a pair of one-game suspensions, under the league’s supplemental discipline process, as a result of separate incidents that occurred in games on Dec. 30, 2012.

Senior forward A.J. Treais of the University of Michigan has been suspended for one (1) game. The action was taken by the league after a review of an incident that occurred near the 17:28 mark of the third period in a game against Michigan State and resulted in the player receiving major and game misconduct penalties for Contact to the Head.

Treais is ineligible to play in Michigan’s next regular-season game, Jan. 8, against Bowling Green. He is eligible to return to the lineup on Jan. 11

I would say I'm glad it isn't against a good opponent but after that GLI Semifinal, I will take no one lightly ever, ever again in hockey.

I'd really like to do some breakdowns of the more interesting officiating calls in Michigan games (and I think it might almost be interesting to like six people on the MGoBoard) but living out of state makes catching a lot of these live difficult, and a lot of time penalties aren't included on highlight reels, let alone non-calls.

super interesting, I think!  As I recall, you played for quite a while at a fairly high level?  So your input would be a great perspective.  But understandably difficult to do without film of calls/no-calls which is regrettably difficult to come by.

As an aside, Merrill had his doctor's appointment this evening.  (http://michigan.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=41&mid=161394765&sid=883&tid…; I'm assuming it that even though it's a relatively late appointment, it's done by now, but I haven't seen any news on his status from Spath, Slovin, official sources or anyone, really.  I'll be holding my breath until I get an update.  They're saying that even if he's cleared for contact he would likely NOT play the NTDP on Friday, but return for the Tuesday game against BGSU at the earliest, or maybe wait for Alaska next weekend.  My $0.02-with Treais out, even against Bowling Green, Merrill will probably play as long as he's completely healthy.  Michigan NEEDS these points in conference and definitely can't afford to not pick up 3 against Bowling Green at home.

Illinois HS varsity and Midget AA were as high as I ever went. I am a currently active referee and have done everything from Silver Mites to ACHA D1 (college club) and Junior A tryouts/practices, so I'd say my expertise is more in the rulebook and bands than the x's and o's, where guys like JeepinBen and CenterIce probably have a good deal more knowledge than I do.

JimLahey and ClaranceBeeks both played at a much higher level than I did, among a few others. I believe we also have a former M player here, and at least a couple other guys who made it into juniors (which I never did) but I'm drawing blanks on their names at the moment.

I'll see if I can get my hands on the next BTN game to see if it's something I could make a board post or diary on, especially now that I know I've got one reader.

but I deleted it after watching it and haven't seen it on other highlights.  As I recall it was a blatant, thuggish elbow to the head.  Not much momentum behind it, he just kinda gets close, then throws the elbow right into the other guy's facemask.  Really, really dumb, especially up 2 late in a rivalry game.  By your senior captain.  It wasn't a huge hit, it was just really obviously a malicious attempt to actully elbow the other player's head. I woulda suspended him and I'm pretty lenient on these things and heavily biased in favor of Michigan.  The lack of thought Treais displayed there cannot be overstated.
