An anonymous authority on the subject's anonymous neighbor's pet cat had this to say:

Athlon Sports is at the cutting edge of college football recruiting and coverage. They are THE go-to source for all information on every team, and Brandon Cavanaugh is a clear frontrunner for the Robbins-Snyder writer of the year award. In fact, his articles are so awesome that every other writer in the country, whether they cover sports or not, should resign effective immediately and find a new career path. They'll never work for a company a hundredth as good as Athlon Sports, and they'll never be a thousandth as good as Brandon Cavanaugh. Why even pretend that you can ever hope to hold a candle to Brandon Cavanaugh or Athlon Sports?

I'm not about to argue with an expert opinion like that.

Hadn't really ever read an athalon article before, but it seems like a poverty version of the bleacher report.

My favorite part is when the author brings Mike Dontonio into the mix.  Basically conceding that Nebraska isn't as good as Michigan, but hey D'antonio doesn't like Harbaugh either and they won the big ten this year.

One) we know who the recruit is and the dad came out with an axe to grind right away with that weird thing with kicking Mattison out of the house and claiming they said his son was dumb.

Two)   Some people like the energy, some people don't, on the whole it seems to be a net positive.

Three)  Glad Nebraska is happy with Riley's style as they're going to be stuck with it for awhile.  May as well have their outlets try to pump him up.

For the record I like Mike Riley, I liked him at Oregon State when he bought In n' Out for the team after a victory and think he's a genuinely good guy.  I just hope Nebraska fans are cool with what he is which is manifestly not Jim Harbaugh.

The piece promotes Riley's methods as being more effective than Harbaugh's "antics."  It uses an anonymous "parent closely involved in the recruitment of a current Nebraska Cornhusker."

Not exactly a paragon of journalistic standards...

This would be like Sam Webb taking a shot at Riley.   Writer is a bit biased...

He has also contributed to the preseason magazine Cornhusker Kickoff/Sea of Red in a recruiting analyst capacity and the 2015 Huskers Illustrated yearbook with several op/ed pieces.

It's all good - he gets his moment in the sun before retreating to cover the 4th best program in the Big 10 west the other 364 days of the year.

If he is talking about a current Nebraska player that Michgan recruited under Harbaugh, there are pretty much only 2 players that fit that description. And wouldn't you know it that one of those players and his father combined for the most ridiculous negative Michigan-related recruiting story last year:

The writer is from Omaha, the same town that Daishon Neal's family is from.

if I were getting my ass kicked on the recruiting trail, along with proof that the finishing touches when applied by Harbaugh and staff produce a much better product, and when combined with preparing young men for life, sans football, the University of Michigan is second to none in this conference when it comes to allowing young men to realize their educational potential.  Hell, it was just a few decades ago that the price of education at NU matched  that of the national average for juco studends and the level of education their students were exposed to were at about the same level. How many people do you think were really impressed by their abundance of academic AAs? Only those that actually believed it was a legit instititution of higher learning.

Not surprised at all the level of  football success has dropped dramatically since the days it held such an unfair advantage. Unfair advantage? Yes, if one considers their Offensive line was largely homegrown and tutition was a non factor, thus allowing them to skirt the scholarship limit.  It was documented that not one NU full back ever received an athletic scholarship, a prize that was reserved for members of their defensive roster and skill players on the other side of the ball.

And I do applaud its willingess to drastically increase the level of education it provides, along with the built-in costs of doing so both requirements for entrance into this conference, , but it will take awhile for recognizition of such gains. Patience, it wll come in time.

I would also be interested in knowing just how great the pay off was for Riley with his approach at his previous stop I don't recall him making a splash within his conference, let alone on the national stage.  It is easy, I would guess, to set back and poke fun at Harbaugh's methods when it becomes obvious you simply don't possess the means to experience a greater degree of success. I mean, what the hell else are you going to do?

I think the obvious answer would be to draw as little publicity as possible on tried and true methods that haven't produced even the odor of anything resembling the smell of success.  And I loved including Dantonio in the piece as well. Publicity, and shining on a light on how far he still has to go to prove his indlusion into elite status is doing a favor to those he competes against on the recruiting trail. Just as everyone pays any attention to cfb is aware of MSU making it the cfb playoff this year is equally aware of their performance on its largest stage. Good work guys and thanks.

It;s pretty clear Brandon Cavanaugh is sick of writing for Athlon and wants to move down the ladder to the Free Press.

This of course will be his most commented piece in his life so in that regard - smart move.

Riley had the Huskers bounce back from their last second loss to BYU by beating South Alabama 48-9.  So they have that going for them.

Shhh, we won't mention that Purdue's win over Nebraska doubled the Boilermakers win total for the season.

PSA - DO NOT READ. I did. It was time I will never get back. Go find your most butt hurt Sparty friend. Or listen to Valenti. They both sound as paranoid and annoying as that writer.

Save you time. Go scrapbook or something. Just don't read this article.

Want clicks? Write about Harbaugh good or bad and you get them. Nobody would have read this obscure piece of crap about Riley until the author attached Harbaughs name to it.
