Anyone that says fickell recruited Meyer to take his job is highly suspect.
well that's just, like, your opinion, man
Anyone that says fickell recruited Meyer to take his job is highly suspect.
...Fickell never had a chance to win and thus little opportunity to retain the job. This saves him his reputation in the event he wants to pursue a HC position elsewhere down the road.
ohio fans should keep their wet dreams to themselves.
You're source is quite convincing.
I'm not Scared....
Mattison, that is all.... I'm sure he got to know the ins and outs of Urban Meyer while he was working for him...
Mattison helped weak ND teams beat Michigan because he know LC's system inside-out, especially his playcalling tendencies. Besides, I'm still not convinced that Meyer has the "fire in the belly" that he used to have. Fickell knows that Meyer could leave at any time and wanting to stay as a de facto "coach in waiting" is a great move.
On the other hand, if Meyer is ready to give it is all, the morons who still insist that "the spread won't work in the Big Ten" are in for a rude awakening.
I highly doubt the accuracy of your information and the timing of it. Let's wait til something concrete with reputable sources is or is not announced
No way he would have his staff filled out already
Another charlatan move to name/introduce a football coach at a basketball game with some contrived speech. Bring it on!
Maybe introduce was the wrong word. Hoke wasn't at the b-ball game to give some rah-rah speech like Tressel was and like Meyer most certainly will be.
Section 1, even though Hoke was actually introduced at a presser, IIRC.
Still funny though. The BBall game thing with the students was memorable.
I'm pretty sure the above photo was planned by the students and not the AD.
I find this whole Meyer-to-OSU stuff very strange. Why would any coach agree to jump into a coaching job at a school that is going to receive NCAA sanctions of unknown severity and length? I have no doubt that Gene Smith is scrambling to find a coach that will save his job, but why would that coach take the job?
Because he's from Ohio, Woody Hayes is his idol, and it's his dream job?
Im sure a bunch of people thought JoePa was their idol but not many are gonna shout that from the rooftops these days. I mean woody had a few loose screws too hence how he retired. And Hoke is from ohio and so am I but you dont see us daring to wear that awful scarlett. Meyer wants the job b/c its more elite than Florida and background has nothing to do with it.
You'd be surprised at what people will do when there's a truckload of money attached.
There is no way they hire a new coach and keep the previous coach on staff. That will never happen.
The coordinator list is pretty weak. I love it!
Thats the main problem with this story. Urban is known for having strong coordinators. He had Mullen, Strong, Addazio (questionably strong), and Mattison just to name a few.
Were any of those guys considered strong hires when Meyer hired them? Mullen was QB coach at Utah, Strong was the existing DC at Florida under Zook, and Mattison had just been demoted at ND. And I'd say even using the term "questionably strong" about Addazio would make Florida fans vomit in their mouths a little bit. Yes, hindsight says that Mullen, Strong and Mattison were great coordinators, but maybe in five years we'd be saying the same thing about Meyer's reported choices at Ohio State.
He was claiming it would (obviously) be an important decision. Even if he slept on it I don't think we'll hear anything for a few more days, or weeks.
Unless someone known breaks this story, can we please get a rumor disclaimer? This thread title is awful.
Bring it on Urban! Go Blue!
Only question I have is how long was his existing contract with Florida when he backed out of that. If I was Florida, I would be looking for compensation.
I really don't think this board needs one of these posts every time a new "source" reports that this is a done deal. I think we can wait for the official announcement.
I hope this happens. Does the expression "the bloom is off the rose" mean anything to Meyer? It will after he fails to meet expectations and get dominated by Hoke like Cooper by Carr.
Also, you forgot to add Mike Boren, snow plow coach to the staff.
It probably is a done deal, but until I hear it from Pat Dooley (or Urbz himself [obviously]) I don't buy it.
What a crock. I'd be pissed if I was a Florida fan.
"Too...sick...too...coach....hey, $40MM from Ohio, woohoo!"
Interesting point...does Meyer have any contractual obligations to Florida if his retirement isn't really a retirement. I am almost sure his contract wasn't up...
Hope there is a nasty buyout or lawsuit
Wouldn't meyer probably wait to hear the NCAA sanctions before thinking about the job?
Honestly I'm surprised this train of thought doesn't get more attention.
Yes, it's totally believable that OSU would do this during Michigan week.
I'm surprised OSU fans are excited about Meyer to OSU, considering they have been saying for months that the spread doesn't work in the B1G.
fans who still say that (dumber by virtue of being OSU fans). Always humorous that people will ignore actual facts that completely invalidate their opinion. Yet keep repeating it.
for Brady Hoke to beat.
an ABC game, Meier is calling Tech v. Tech. on ESPN. Even the throw away portions of your "breaking news" are inaccurate.
Aren't ABC and ESPN afiliated? That wouldn't be a tough change for someone in his position to make.
only tell you that it would be the first time this year that Meier and crew were not calling the noon game on ESPN. They have not done a game on regional ABC coverage this year, even when there have been noon games such as Texas v. OU. I think M. v. Ohio State will probably get Patrick and James or McDonaugh and Millen. Won't be lucky enough to get Nessler and Blackledge.
I could be wrong, I just know that crew is assigned ESPN noon games.
ABC and ESPN are affiliated but their announcing teams are pretty much kept separate. So, since the game is on ABC it is very unlikely that Spielman, Pash and Meyer were scheduled to be the announcers.
kid is awesome! Somebody get him some maize and blue though.
He's crushing that sand like it's made of sand!!
Delicious sand is delicious.
He's getting Mattison back as his DC!
I really don't give a crap who their coach is; we take care of our business and business gets taken care of.
he even considers this until he sees what the NCAA penalty is. Urban is not going to any school with a 3 year bowl ban.
Does anyone else think these rumors are just a tad bit fishy? I mean, I can see how this would work out...if Ohio doesn't get serious NCAA sanctions.
But is Meyer the kind of guy who, like Lane Kiffin, will want to coach a team with reduced scholarships who is banned from bowl games for several years? I don't think so.
The ruling comes in late November/early December, right? My guess is if it's bad, he declines; but if it's not too bad, an announcement comes pretty quickly.
That sucks for him.
Urban Meyer has announced he has recently adopted Brionte Dunn.
$5.7 million per year puts him well above any coach in CFB, by more than $500,000.
This just seems ridiculous, even by Ohio and CFB standards.
They might be redistributing some of the money they had been using to pay players.
For this to be true then Ohio would have had to have contacted all schools involved to ask permission to interview the coaches. If they had done that then we would've heard about it. So I put no creditibility in the assistant coaches. I also have a heard time with Urban going to a university that will be getting a bowl ban and reduction in scholarships. Especially if those figure are anywhere close to true. With that much money Ohio will be looking to win know.
Yer splelling is impekkable.
Why get so excited about Meyer. He has never beaten Michigan, at Utah or Florida, and the one year he destroyed OSU, Mattison was his DC. I say, bring it on. Urban Meyer, most overrated coach in CFL.
I can't create threads but Aldophus Washington committed to OSU today per press conference.
One telling thing that applies to this thread though is that Washington thinks he will be playing for Meyer rather than Fickell. Wouldn't that be a recruiting violation if Urban hasn't been officially hired or publicly hired? Obviously, ashington isn't saying Urban is or isn't hired but you can't recruit until it is announced correct?
Since there's one just 6 posts down.
That is my fault. I guess I looked right over it. I thought it was a little weird that I didn't see that.
Thank you sir for pointing out my shortcomings.
a force, but that was Mountain West.
Now, lets look at Florida.
He won his first championship with mostly his predecessors players, not to diminish it, but those weren't his guys. He did get Tebow, but I think anyone would get the hometown boy to go to Florida. Without Tebow he would not have that second championship.
And since that second championship, they have gone down hill with HIS players running the show.
He's a hometown guy, decent coach, but he's no savior. The Columbus police will be busier than ever now. OVERRATED IMO.
This argument is lunacy. He has won everywhere he has been...Florida, Utah, and Bowling Green for god sakes. It doesn't matter how you do it, you just need to win. We hired hoke when all he had for coaching experience was SDSU and Ball state...
Urban was a great coach. Is he still remains to be seen, but at least give him his due
Said I wasn't diminishing the championships.... but I don't believe he's as good as people think. I do think he's got a perfect QB for his system in Miller, so he will have success pretty quickly, but too many worriers out here. OSU was going to get a big name coach no matter what, and Urban is that...and he'll win a lot, but I doubt no more than any other top coach they would bring in. Hopefully they get slammed more by the NCAA than they think they are, which would put a damper on his initial success, but there should be some nice battles down the road to look forward to.
Meyer's best assistant coach of course is now on the Michigan staff, Mattison. And it was Mattison who convinced Tebow to go to Florida, according to what I've read.
And Mattison's defense at Florida was great; like it will be at Michigan!
I don't understand the doubters...the non-denial denial on the Neb. telecast was all I needed to hear after the catagorical denials previously issued by Meyer about other open jobs to tell me that this deal was going to happen. I'd say it is pretty clearly being leaked to have an influence on recruits and deflect fans from the potential beat-down coming up this Saturday (please, please...).
I'll be honest...not so excited about this. Meyer is a great coach with great success at every stop. Does it panic me? No, since it is hard to imagine any coach having more dominance over us than Tressel did, so anything different is better. However, I sure would have been happier with Luke Fickel or some other middling guy for a while as we get on our feet. YMMV.
Great, the 5th Meyer post in the last 2 days. Mods please make a consolidated Meyer fear post for everyone who thinks they are breaking news.
Did you guys hear Taylor Lewan ripped a man in half at a bar the other day? I forget where I read it but I'll try and find a link
Here I've got your back. Just let me log onto Twitter real quick...
There's way too much chatter from multiple different places for the Urbie to OSU rumor not to be likely true, but the 7 years / $40 MM detail is either wrong or reeks of panic. Meyer had three or four very good years at Florida, but his last year was mediocre at best. He was having trouble competing with Bama once Saban got fully established there and even the LSU and Auburn programs were in better shape than Florida's by the time Urbie left Gainesville.
Also, Urbie has shown no ability to run a pro style offense, so either he plans to bring his spread to Columbus or he comes with a big question mark as to how succesful he will be running a pro style team. I'm not among the naysayers that claim a spread cannot work in the B10, but if he converts Ohio to a spread that should make it easier for Michigan to recruit elite level Ohio kids who want to play in a pro style offense.
Why would OSU pay nearly $6 MM per year for this? If true, it's probably just Gee and Smith trying to save their jobs with a high profile hire. It also reminds me of the Charlie Weis 10-year deal at ND. Just like Charlie, if Urbie isn't dominating Michigan and winning national championships by year two, the $40 MM price tag is going to look pretty stupid.
But by this standard, he'll be coaching agains UM's Miles/Harbaugh two-headed monster.
Don't care. Beat Ohio.
I'm not afraid of him, but I think you all are overlooking his ability. He's succeeded at every stop. He recruits very well and will certainly be a tough force to recruit against in Ohio.
Bottom line is, if he gets a good staff and star coordinators, Ohio will remain a strong program. If Miller learns to throw, they have the talent around him to be formidable in the future. I think Hoke vs Meyer would be great for the rivalry though
Urban himself said "I have not been contacted and I have not accepted any job." While he was calling the Michigan game. I think it would be dumb to take a job before NCAA ruling anyway. I think he has it made doing what he is doing anyway. Bucknut's are a bunch of fags anyway, who are just trying to get the fan base excited before a game where they are gonna get destroyed ! GO BLUE !!!
wrong. he said I haven't been offered any job. and he hadn't accepted any job.
read between the lines. they were still in talks at that point.
also If you watch sportscenter, ESPN broke it a while ago that they were in talks about the OSU coaching position.
Want to top that post off with some racist comments too?
This is rumor being fanned by OSU partisans in order to rally a deflated team/base.
wheres your fucking link? dont post bullshit rumors.
Those who don't want Urban at OSU should simply fan the fact that OSU -- a team in deep shit with the NCAA -- wants to hire a coach that had something like 45 players arrested during his last few years in Florida. (See USA Today, SI, ESPN.) Urban ran something close to a rogue program in Florida. How can anyone explain that away? How would hiring Urban say "We want a coach who runs a clean ship?" It's sickening.
Same guy who quit to be with family (quit AS Florida was not in the spotlight - made announcement before BCS Champ game, quit to BE WITH FAMILY), then came back after not consulting w that same family, came back and led Florida to an 8-4 season to then quit AGAIN, again when Florida wasn't in the spotlight, this time for health reasons, who then continued to take a job w/ESPN, traveling all over the country working long hours, not spending time w/his family, not resting as he said he needed
Sounds like a perfect fit for that school in ohio
Until it is official it is just talk.
The dude has health issues. What make you think that won't re-occur at OSU?
I think Meyer is tempted to take the job because it is a dream job for him, but if his health issues were as serious as suggested he won't be long for OSU.
This is good news for the rivalry. We want a good team down south that plays within the guidelines of the NCAA. This is good for football and good for Michigan!
especially when they're program is in shambles. Didn't they fire EARL BRUCE a couple days before the UM game (eons ago)? They know they might lose and lose bad, so let's start making excuses and distractions....classy.
I doubt he will agree to any contract with OSU until after the sanctions are announced. If they include bowl bans, he will probably broadcast for another year or two. Eventually he may coach OSU.
I say BRING IT!!!
I want OSU to be dominant...it'll make MSU and PSU weak. We'll only have to deal with one team outside of Nebraska every year and that's Ohio. For all the marbles like it should be.
I really am not worried about this at all. In fact It would be good for Michigan if Meyer is actually hired becuase it makes Ohio State relevant in light of its sanctions. We have an elite coaching staff with Hoke, Mattison etc. and Meyer at OSU could make this rivalry as interesting and intense as it has ever been. I would also not worry too much about recruiting because recruiting is all about relationships with high school coaches and players and Hokes staff is, from all accounts, as good in that area as there is. Another thing to keep in mind is that historically, whether in business or in sports, hiring all star exec or coaching staffs is not always the right answer. Its often the staff that is the best fit and most committed to their institutions that are the most successful. I think we win there.
Beating down an interim coach is no fun. Now giving Urban Meyer the John Cooper treatment is much more appealing.
Oh, I don't know. Giving them a good beat down this Saturday would be a lot of fun!
will immediately commit to us since he doesn't want to play in a spread offense. Yes, please!
Was this posted by an ohio fan? Cause seriously, this is the kind of post I would make if I was making a point about how unimpressive the new staff was.
My only feeling is relief if this is the case.
The Urban to OSU hiring is the worst kept secret in the history of Earth. The job will be open next Monday or Tuesday, and they will be trotting Urban out during the Duke basketball game .
ESPN is putting him in the studio this weekend instead of the booth calling the game for goodness sakes. That should tell you that there is a conflict of interest right there.
Nothing but more drama till the end of next Saturday's game. He denied the rumors just like Brian Kelly did 2 years ago about Notre Dame!!!!!!
Still waiting on that link? IT'S OFFICIAL, THIS OP IS A TOOL!
Those are the same folks that got their hands on the Pentagon Papers, right? Did they meet Deep Throat in a parking garage at 3 AM for information on Watergate too?
That has to be the most underwhelming staff list ever. An eleven year old OSU fan could think of a far better group in about 20 seconds.
If Urban Meyer becomes the head coach, then OSU will be shelling out way more dough for far more pricey assistants (after thorough background checks and legal fees of course).
Too bad about Mullen and Strong though.
Seriously. Who gives a crap if Urban gets hired by OSU? So what? Have we gotten so bad that they define our reaction to events? Holy shit guys. Lighten up.
Really there are still people out there that think osu is gonna get hit with severe sanctions? 3 year bowl ban ? Come on your just making yourself look like an idiot for saying that. Anyone who believes thats will be disapointed because its not gonna happen
Some of you guys drive me crazy. Half the people that post stuff on here have no clue what there talking about. And on the arguement that meyer won his 2 nc because of tebow and isnt a good coach isnt a valid arguement. You can take pretty much any champion in the history of college football and say well the only reason they won is insert star player of that team. Sound like a bunch ppl that are scared and that are trying to convince yourself its not gonna work. Hes won everywhere hes been hes gonna win at osu theres gonna be no harsh sanctions. Just need to let osu worry bout osu and worry bout beating them cuz its only been done once in 10 years
The same Urban Meyer that stomped Osu in the title game?.The Urban Meyer that never let off the gas agaisnt his dream job school?..7 years are you serious? i think this list is there dream list. So is he going to coach their bowl game? How many times has Les Miles taken the UM job now? etc
The bigger story is I just accepted the coaching postion at Little sisters of the Poor..We are playing Ohio in our bowl game this year.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/andy_staples/06/03/best-co... - a list of the college footballs best coaching jobs. Tosu job in number 2 on the list and ann arbor is 12
2. Ohio State
Yes, the NCAA might still come down hard on the Buckeyes for the rules violated during the Jim Tressel era. Short of the Death Penalty, which won't happen, that shouldn't scare away anyone from applying for the job. (It might, but it shouldn't.) Consider this: Miami won a national title in 2001, a little more than five years after it received crippling sanctions from the NCAA. Alabama won a national title in 2009, seven years after receiving crippling sanctions from the NCAA. Ohio State is in better position to bounce back than either of those two programs, regardless of what the NCAA does. Ohio State owns a state loaded with excellent players. As an added bonus, many of those recruits come from high schools with small college-quality coaching. Ohio State enjoys a recruiting advantage no other Big Ten school -- with the possible exception of Penn State -- can duplicate. As any reporter covering the recent scandal knows, the fan base's passion is unmatched by anyone outside the state of Alabama. The program brings in more money than everyone but Texas ($451.9 million over the past five years), so the coach essentially has a blank check for facilities and staffing needs. When Ohio State officials go in search of a new coach in 2012, they should have no shortage of willing candidates -- no matter how severe the NCAA's sanctions.
"As any reporter covering the recent scandal knows, the fan base's passion is unmatched by anyone outside the state of Alabama."
ahahahahaha..reporter? unmatched? you volunteer to concede to Alabama? the soap box your standing on is about to crumble along with your program.
no one likes ohio anything
