Ohio State really needs to shore up their defense. Their defense was not up to the Tressel standards.

On the other hand, their schedule is pretty weak so maybe Herbie has a point.

Why? What did he say that was noteworthy?

He predicted his alma mater, which went undefeated last season, to win a weak conference via a weak schedule while speaking at an OSU event. I seriously don't get why this is noteworthy at all. And I see nothing about his comments that have anything to do with what Gardner said.

EDIT: Also, why is "one up" in quotes in the title? Is that supposed to be sarcastic, because he didn't actually say anything in response to Gardner?

Because he's talking about our biggest rival. So yeah, I believe it is noteworthy.

I put "one up" because he is not only predicting a Michigan win, but a Big Ten championship.

Again, its our biggest rival.........If you don't see why something like this is posted in a Michigan football forum, then your ignorance is beyond help.

I asked why the phrase "one up" was in quotation marks, not why you used it.

But using the phrase "one up" doesn't make a lot of sense either, because he wasn't responding to Gardner. All he said essentially was that OSU would do well, and you're taking that to mean that he was calling out Michigan, specifically. He didn't call out Michigan any more than he did any other team on OSU's schedule. His comments had nothing to do with Gardner, and had no more to do with Michigan than they did with any of the other 11 teams on OSU's schedule.

Alternative title: "Man says preferred sports team expected to have good season. Rival team takes offense."

I was trying to avoid listening to Lou Holtz until at least college football starts, but when I turned on the golf channel this morning there he was. Extolling the virtues of golf and what not and I was just waiting for him to somehow steer the conversation to Notre Dame. I think he started talking about ND's golf course or something and it was all downhill from there.

I don't really consider this the same as DG because you're comparing a current player to a former player/broadcaster. Unless he's secretly coaching on the side, Herbie won't have any part in them winning (if they do). DG will have to put his money where his mouth is on the field all year after his comments (which I think he will, btw).

We Are The Borg

As I said months ago, the NW/Ohio game is one the media and their respective fans will try to hype. They will all say, "watch out for this game, Buckeyes." That is exactly what you're doing. I guarantee everyone that Ohio wins by at least two touchdowns, likely more. I'm not buying the hype of NW. Also, I will gladly eat crow if Ohio loses.

I agree. They're the cockiest and most over confident fanbase, but I feel Ohio will be undefeated coming into the M game. I also feel that M will be undefeated going into that game. We also have a pretty weak schedule. Toughest games are ND (home game and they're back to Rees) and MSU on the road, but they're going to go back to being same ole Sparty this year, so I'm not worried about them.

It is a pathetic schedule, especially the non conference and I agree with you EVERYONE is saying watch out for Northwestern because frankly that is the only rough road game they have outside of M.  So you can imagine that is all they hear in Columbus too, which makes it less likely it creates an upset.  That said OSU beat powerhouse Indiana by 3 pts last year so there could be a game they stumble but based on odds they should be undefeated going into Ann Arbor.  Hopefully we begin a John Cooper tradition anew.

...if I were the Buckeyes. Certainly OSU will be favored to win (and should win) that game;  however, the last time the Aztecs rolled into Columbus against a highly ranked Ohio team, this happened:

OSU     16
SDSU  13
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=232490194

The Aztecs were a bowl team last year that beat Boise State in Idaho. They return a bunch of players, especially the young playmakers on offense, and Coach Long has done a pretty good job of maintaining what Hoke started here.

To be straight...I do not expect SDSU to win. What I am saying is that if OSU overlooks them, SDSU is much more likely to beat them than a really, really poor Cal team.

OSU will be favored by twenty-plus but will have to work for every bit of another 5 point win or less.

A couple thoughts:

1.  What's with folks being so testy in this thread?  A deep breath or two can work wonders.

2.  The line is not always a great predictor of performance (that kinda being my whole point of their 2012 performance).  See, for example, Indiana (favored by 21, won by 3).  Anyone predict they'd need OT to beat Purdue?

I've never liked this guy. A not so cool story, bro - early 00's, I arrived early for a game with my Dad, we were hanging out waiting for our friends to arrive. Herb was next to us for a bit. A golf cart pulled up and a guy drove him about a 100 feet to a studio/stage area. While he was hanging out he ogled every girl that walked near us including some that looked pretty young. He just seemed douchy and sleezy, but keep in mind I'm very biased against OSU folks.

Remember, even after the MMB showed them how to spell Ohio it took them two years to master it. Of course, to be fair, i believe 6 months of that time was spent trying to get the dot on the i to the right spot.
