Henson: Durkin DC, Roman OC

This is potentially good for Communist Football, as Roman and Harbaugh went to visit Chip Kelly at Oregon to learn how to adapt the read option to the 49ers, as Brian noted in his Profiles in Heroism post:

Roman has also been down to visit Nevada, where Colin Kaepernick went to school:

I am a Niners fan and I would love to see Greg Roman as Michigan OC. He's worked with Harbaugh since 2009 at Stanford. That relationship is key. Some Niners fans made Roman the scapegoat for a subpar year. If you look at what he did at Stanford and San Francisco it is clear that Roman and Harbaugh are a great combo. They turned Alex Smith into a good QB which is quite an accomplishment as he was horrible for so many years. They made a very unpolished Kaepernick into a superstar. They were very innovative with the pistol but still effectively ran a power run game which had almost gone extinct in the NFL. If this truly does happen it is a great thing.

I hope he's right. And, lest he feel slighted, I'll note that Henson appears to be a reliable source in the JH story, though a paper cut might send him to the ER.

I would be extremely happy about Durkin, he has been a great DC. Also, I feel that Roman has done a really good job with Harbaugh. A question for people that know more about the 49ers this year and in the past few years with roman as a OC: I know the 49er fans have been calling for Roman's head, however, is it warranted or is it more of a product of the fact that they have to call for someones head due to the recent record which hasn't been as good as the past 3 years?

He has been the DC at florida for 2 years and I like what he has done there as a DC. There aren't too many people that would realistically be available that I would want over him. He also was recruiter of the year a few years back. I really like what he would bring to the coaching staff overall.

Oh don't get me wrong, Muschamp was the significant factor in molding that defense, but I'm sure Durkin was also quite helpful. Is there anyone that we could realistically get that you would rather have? Vic Fangio would have been really nice, but I just assumed he wanted to stay in the pro's and maybe try to move up to a HC position.

I know the Jaguars wanted to give him the head job that eventually went to Gus Bradley. I don't think it is always sound logic to write a coach/OC/DC after one bad year. Roman didn't just forget how to call plays well - its usually more complicated than that, and not always the fault of the coach.

Nuss was the most celebrated OC hire in Michigan history, it didn't work out here, probably for reasons beyond his control. That doesn't mean he isn't a good OC, either.

You have to look at the body of work over a career - Roman's is impressive.

Was their offense really a disaster?  They were bottom half of the NFL in points scored, but not too far away from being smack dab in the middle.  They also had 4 games against Arizona and Seattle, two of the best defenses in the league, and another against KC.  They only had two games where they were held to single digits (both against the Seahawks) and 5 games where they scored 26+.  How many offensive injuries did they have?

They didn't have a dominant offense this year, I agree.  But to say they were an offensive disaster is just ridiculous.  Roman is at least a middle of the road NFL OC, which makes him one of the best fucking offensive coordinators in all of college football.

49ers have always had a respectable run game with some creative sets, shifts, and personnel combinations. I suppose we could do worse than Roman. We also won't have to worry about Harbaugh & Roman needing time to gel.

So a rumor I read is that a big part of the strife between Harbaugh and the 49ers FO was due to Harbaugh refusing to fire Roman. Is there any reason why he should've fired Roman? As someone who hasn't followed Roman's career too closely, aside from knowing he's shared Harbaugh's success since Stanford, is this a good hire?

When roman got his first job with carolina, he invited me and my dad to be guests of the Panthers for a Monday night game in Charlotte and we got to stay in the team hotel and have a team meal with them in the ballroom. I don't remember much, I was like 11... but my dad was super excited to be remembered like that and thanked by Greg ....

Is Roman a good recruiter? I realize coaches in coordinator positions don't typically earn their keep recruiting, but it sure as hell doesn't hurt if they can. Durkin obviously can recruit, but I'm completely in the dark as far as Roman.

I think Roman and Durkin would be amazing. Looking at their offense in Stanford and in the NFL, I think they would have plenty arsenal for wins in the near future. DJ durkin on the sidelines would be energetic. The guy has swag.
