Henne to start for JAX, has chance to keep job

Submitted by Butterfield on

Blaine Gabbert is injured, but his coach certainly isn't guaranteeing him his job back when he's healthy - IF Chad Henne can seize the opportunity.

Problem is I'm not sure DanJohnTom MarinoElwayBrady would be able to have success with this Jacksonville team that has to be a strong candidate for 0-16.

Still, best of luck to Chad, hopefully he can catch fire and steal the job back from Gabbert permanently*. And as a bonus, maybe Denard can do better than 2 carries for 1 yard this week.

*Note:  Permanently does not mean the same thing in Jacksonville as it does elsewhere.

It seems weird to call a QB a bust who was drafted at the end of the second round and is still in the league 6 years later (in a starter-ish role).

Matt Leinart is a bust.  There are a half dozen or so first round QBs drafted in the last 6-8 who aren't even in the league anymore.  Hell, the pick immediately before Henne in 2008 was Brian Brohm, and Henne's doing way better than him.

Really, any QB taken outside of the first round is almost always a back-up type guy at best, and Henne is at least that.  Hell, he's the 3rd best QB to come out of that draft behind Matt Ryan and Flacco (financially, Matt Flynn is ahead of Henne, but hasn't proven it on the field).

Henne got a second contract bigger than his first one and so far has netted about $10 million as an NFL player.  He'll be a free agent after this year and if he can do anything on the field he could end up in even better shape.  There are maybe a dozen guys in the league at any given time who are established starters that aren't despised by a big chunk of their own fanbase.  Not being one of those few guys isn't all that rare or such a terrible thing.

He's no JaMarcus Russell, that is for sure.

1st round

- Top 15: Franchise player

- Mid to late: Pro Bowler

2nd Round: Starter

3rd Round: Fringe Starter/Backup

4th Round: Backup

5th Round: Backup to 3rd string

6th Round: ST

7th Round: ST/Practice Squad

Based on the grading scale, where a player is drafted does not always match up with the scout's grade on a prospect.  For example, a player could be graded out as a 1st round pick but is drafted at 3rd round. Typically this is the kind of player who will outplay their draft status.  Another example is a player is graded out at 4th round but is drafted at 1st round (believe me it happened in NFL) and that player typically does not perform up to expectation.

NFL Prospects rankings are not universal and NFL team all rank prospects differently. One team could grade one prospect out as a 2nd round while the other team grade the same prospect as a 5th round pick.  It's a matter of preference, fits, and character.

When a QB is drafted at 2nd round, they are considered to be a solid starter but not a franchise QB.  In Henne's case, he didn't perform up to his draft status.

use the grading scale whether you agree with it or not.  How I know this?  I actually have connection with a couple of NFL people and scouts and this is what they told me about the grading scale.  It is universal for prospect's draft grade.  The reason why there aren't many starting 2nd round QB is there are very few 2nd round QB drafted.  Teams consider a 2nd round QB a starter, not backup QB.  However, teams wants a franchise QB not a decent starting QB which is why the frequency of starting QBs are drafted at 1st round especially at top 10 pick.

I figured this would happen, though I thought it might take until after the second or third week to come about.  I've never benn big on Gabbert.  I'm a Henne homer and have bias of course, but I do realize Henne also hasn't exactly been starter material, I again just haven't seen the Gabbert love Jacksonville keeps giving him.

Edit:  I need to read.  I didn't figure he'd get hurt, didn't see that portion.  But the remaining points stand.

I've felt that Gabbert has been incredibly overrated since the beginning. I agree that Henne hasn't been that good, but I would also agree that he's been better than Gabbert. Jacksonville got caught up in Gabbert's measurables and forgot that he wasn't that great in college. I still feel that Henne is a better option, and I look for Jacksonville to draft a QB early next draft.

The Jags should consider giving Braylon a call, pretty sure Hennebot still spends the first three seconds after a snap checking to see if Braylon's open despite him not being on the field.

Henne is a competent starter in the NFL, and given how bad Gabbert has been I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't roll with Henne for as long as he can stay healthy and shoot for a top pick.

He has a career TD:INT ratio of 42:48, and has completed about 60% of his passes in the NFL.  His main problem is that he's played on some pretty poor teams (he really needs to get out of Florida), and while some of that could be attributed to the QB position, it's not like Miami or Jax have shown competent leadership over the years.

I honestly think you put him in Denver, Pittsburgh, or GB these past couple of years and he'd have decent stats and probably lead a team to the playoffs.  He's not an elite QB by any stretch, but he's at least good enough to start in Jacksonville and I could see him starting in Minny, NYJ, and Tennessee, to name three off the top of my head.

I don't think it is fair to call Henne a bust.  Has he taken a snap for a team that hasn't been beyond awful?  It's hard to look good as a QB when you play for teams that have no one around you.  No one that MIami or Jacksonville has run out there in the last few years has been able to do anything.

You can make a claim for the talent level of the teams Henne played for but at the same time he is the one chucking the interceptions. He has not made the most of his opportunities to play mistake free football. In the NFL teams don't wait to see if you develop, it is either you deliver or you are cut.

His interception rate isn't great by any means (3.5%), but at least part of that has to do with having virtually no weapons on offense except for Reggie Bush and a breaking-down Ricky Williams and a somewhat-interested Brandon Marshall in Miami and, what, Justin Blackmon in Jacksonville.  I don't think he'll ever be a star, but if he just got out of Florida he might prove to be better than people expect.

if they have it. They'll take a franchise QB over a gamechanger DE. QB is a far more important position than DE since it's a high leverage position and if you get it right, they're an instant SB contender.  Get it right with DE, you get a great DE but the overall defense may still suck.
