Henne likely unrestricted free agent

Per South FL Sun-Sentinel:

http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_football_dolphins/2012/02/miami-dol...

Not official, but apparently imminent.  Not completely surprising given the coaching change.

Henne needs a fresh start somewhere else. I was happy to see he and Long in Miami together, but it just didn't work out. Some team will sign him to be a #2. The #1 guy will get hurt, and Henne will take over to be a solid starter for the next 5 years.

I live in Greater Cleveland too, and I really felt Braylon brought his troubles on himself.  I never heard anyone make a big deal out of him being from Michigan until he started to cry about being treated poorly because he was from Michigan.  Thom Darden, Steve Everitt, Ron Johnson (and certainly other UM players)  all played for the Browns and their college history was never an issue.  When you are the No. 3 pick, people will get down on you when you don't produce.  It's because you were the No. 3 pick, not because of where you went to school.

like the poster initially said. Browns fans will love anyone who does well for them. But the first time Henne would have a bad game and throw 3 picks everyone would turn on him. This is how Browns fans are with any QB, throw in the MICH ties and it would be out of control.

Nationally the media and preception is that he is a bad QB. I personally feel that he can be a good QB and was in a bad spot in Miami. I think he fits what the Browns want in a QB very well. He has a strong arm, throws accurate short balls, but can stretch the field when needed.

That said I dont expect the Browns to look at him seriously.

But yes look at what you said. "When Braylon was scoring 17 TDs". Yes, and then look when he started dropping balls and everyone turned on him. Then we get to hear 1000 times about how Robiske got the short end of the stick, now QB, etc etc. Even though he sucks ass.

Cutler is far and away a better qb than Henne. Cutler is IMO a top 10 qb in the NFL, at worst top 15. I think Henne walked into a bad situation in Miami but he isn't as good as Cutler. That being said, Henne would be an excellent backup in that situation in Chicago instead of their typical parade of low draft picks that leave after a year or two.

Top 10?  Cutler no doubt has the TALENT to be top 10, but he is not a great QB.  Off the top of my head I can name 10 better.

Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Stafford, Ryan, Manning (Eli), Roethlisberger, Romo, Rivers, and Flacco are all better quarterbacks.  That's not including a questionable Vick, or Peyton Manning, because of the possibility of him not coming back.  One might even throw Alex Smith into the discussion.

I would love to see what Henne could do in Cutler's situation, or just in a new setting in general.

I don't know how you say Jay has the talent to be top ten but isn't. Isn't that what defines a good quarterback? If you consider his decision-making to be a factor keeping him outside the top ten, look at how he did last year with the Bears. He was on a franchise record-setting pace before he got hurt. I really think the Bears could have had a Giants-esque run in the playoffs if they'd made it.

That being said, I'd definitely put Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Stafford, Eli Manning, Roethlisberger, and Rivers ahead of Cutler.

However, Romo has consistently shown he can't deliver in the clutch.

Matt Ryan has been in the league for a few years now with a very dangerous (I would say top 3) receiving corps, yet his coaches are unwilling to turn him loose because he makes some questionable throws.

Joe Flacco? I'm not impressed, especially when compared to Cutler. He's had a consistently excellent defense as well as a solid offensive line, something Jay hasn't.

Michael Vick hasn't been able to win with a superior unit compared to the Bears offense; Jay has put up better numbers with worse receivers.

I'm not ready to put Alex Smith up here yet. He definitely improved this past season, but I think he's a middle of the pack qb.

Jay Cutler is comparable to Aaron Rodgers in his skill set in that both are able to run and make plays on their own. I think if you dropped Jay into a situation where he had a good offensive line, he'd be Pro Bowl caliber.

Someone told me that each equation I included in the book would halve the sales.

Flacco is definitely not a better QB than Cutler and you're higher than hell if you think Alex Smith is a top 10 QB or even belongs in that discussion.  He's improved leaps and bounds but in reality he went from sucking big time to being a middle of the road QB with flashes of brilliance.  He's in that 15-20 range.

Did Henne lose that game, or did our defense fall apart?  42-39 loss

2004 at OSU, did Henne lose that game, or did our defense fall apart?  37-21 loss

2005 Rose Bowl, did Henne lose that game, or did our defense fall apart?  38-37 loss

2007 Rose Bowl, did Henne lose that game, or did our defense fall apart?  32-18 loss

2007 Appie State. did Henne lose that game, or did our defense fall apart?  34-32 loss

2007 Oregon:  Did Henne lose that game, or did our defense fall apart?  39-7 loss

2007 vs Wisconsin,  Henne did not play due to being hurt....  37-21 loss

2007 OSU, Henne should not have played due to being hurt  ... 14-3 loss

Actually healthy, Michigan beats Florida 41-35 , think henne might have won that game for us???

QB's get too much credit when things go well, and too much blame when they don't.  Football is a team game, so be careful and studious about throwing out some blanket statement like someone could not win big games in college.......

Henne put us in position to win that game at the end.  Apparently you don't remember how bad the defense was that day. Also, the original comment was based on Henne not being able to win the big games in college.  This wasn't a big game, so your point is pretty dumb.

Sorry to change the subject, but man did Bill Parcells ever know how to turn a franchise around.  Patriots, Giants, Jets, Cowboys, Fish, (I know they're mammals), they were all in the crapper when he took over and the man made each playoff contenders seemingly in a couple seasons or less.

Then when he left the Dolphins, they went right down the sewer again.

I'll take some exception to this.  I am a lifelong Giants fan dating back well before Parcells.  Contrary to what many people think the Giants turnaround actually started several years prior to Parcells when Ray Perkins and George Young took over what had been the worst franchise in the NFL.  Perkins took them to the playoffs but then left for his dream job at Alabama.  Parcells then took over a team that already had Phil Simms, Lawrence Taylor, Harry Carson, and more, and the team took a step back for a few years while he got his footing.  He was in fact almost fired after two years

Parcells subsequently was extremely adept at picking situations that had big upside with almost no downside.  When he took over the Patriots, Jets, and even the Cowboys, each had much better talent then their dismal records indicated.  He had low expectations, decent talent and high draft picks.  He also never stuck around long enough to go through more than one talent cycle.

Not saying he isn't a good coach but there is more to the aura than may meet the casual eye.

Not really...historically they have been one of the more patient franchises in the NFL.  My point was that Parcells was far from the turnaround master with the Giants he is often portrayed to be.  Yes he won two Super Bowls but most people who really followed the situation know that the team was built largely by George Young and the Giants' scouting staff.  The reason he was constantly threatening to leave after the first Super Bowl win was he wanted more personnel control.  Wisely they didn't give it to him and ended up winning a second.

With regard to Coughlin I agree he was on the hot seat ...in the media. Most franchises would have fired him after 2010 or mid last season - the Giants didn't and were rewarded when the team stuck together, got healthy, and won again.  It will be interesting to see if teams take note and get less trigger happy with coaches.

Sparano being obsessed with the wildcat was the end of Henne, to many times I would see a Dolphins game and see Henne try to convert 3rd and long, because of wonky play calling on 1st and 2nd down. Now Henne clearly made some boneheaded throws in his starts, but that playcalling completely made him useless and forced him to be way to perfect for a young QB.

Given a fresh start he could be a solid starting QB, nothing flashing but a guy who would throw for 3500 yds and 25 Td's a year with a nice running game.

I didn't understand the timing of some of the wildcat usage.  Just when the O seems to be getting into a rhythm, you grind the gears and throw it off.

So often in the NFL something new will work for a season, but by the next season teams adjust, and it doesn't work so well.

Dolphins wasted a 2nd rounder on Pat White for the wildcat.

I hope Henne will go to a place where he has a chance to start but for some reason I don't see that happening. I would love to see him somehow end up with the Patriots as a backup. That would be cool to have Brady as your starter and Henne as a backup then maybe keep Ryan Mallet as 3rd string and just boot Brian Hoyer since he went to little bro. It would be a Michigan reunion of some sorts.

With the few solid NFL QBs coming out in this draft and with the number of teams that need decent starters, let alone back ups, Henne should find a home somewhere.

So what are the Dolphins going to do?  Play with Matt Moore and nobody?  That's not a good plan even if Matt Moore stays healthy.
