It's not about recruiting and never has been.  That's just an easy answer.  They do it because it's a Cool Thing.  Some people really like Cool Things.  Dave Brandon, the players, and select members of the fanbase spring to mind.  Some people don't like Cool Things, and other select members of the fanbase spring to mind.  It's as simple as that.

... have been suffering, for lack of uniformz?

I don't mind if recruits "like" uniformz.  Recruits can like tattoos, too.  It doesn't make them smart, or necessary, or wise brand management.

When the NFl started doing alternate and throw back uniforms you knew it was only a matter of time before college team did the same thing. As long they are here and there it doesn't matter much. It's actually great for brand management because A. people talk about the uniforms and B. people buy them. The way some folks complain you would think Michigan hasn't changed it uniform in 50 years.

Everything gets updated to be sleeker and cooler in time. Man looking at that Brady jersey makes me miss Nike. Thing is tho there has always been changes to the uniforms and helmets. It might be something like color, adding terrible piping or maybe bumble bee stripes but when you start with this

any change is drastic

My philosophy is don't mess with the home jersey.  When people think of michigan football they think of the winged helmet, blue jerseys, and maize pants running out the tunnel and slapping the banner.

Go crazy with away jerseys.  Blue pants, inverted color scheme helmet, polka dot jerseys I don't care.

I love the traditional unis but the bowl game is the best time to bust out the alternates. If we went with our standard home look with the chrome helmet I would be completely fine. Also, away jerseys and white pants would be awesome.

and blue pants available for both home and away games would be the most simple and understated way to expand our look in football.  All blue homes once in a while, all road whites, blue with white on top on the road, even white with blue on top for home once in a while.  All of those combos would be nice to shake things up and would not require changes to the uniform design.

My thoughts exactly.  As long as we are winning the right way we could wear green and red and I'd be happy.

Although you never see teams like Alabama, Auburn, Texas or USC diving into the uniformz.

I lol'd when I picked up on your sarcasm.

I'm against getting wrapped up in the recruiting hype because as we have been drinking Dantonio's proverbial milkshake in recruiting he has been drinking ours on the field.  So I have taken the approach that I don't care about where a kid was ranked in high school.  I only care about what he does at Michigan.

Alt unis = good as long as they are tastefully done and respect the institution and its history and culture.

Creatively bizarre or jerseys that try to hard = bad like Indiana's candy cane look.

Let's not put words like "honor" on the jerseys instead of names as it looks cheap and like you're trying too hard to show support for x cause. Let's avoid the "camo look" as well. Also, no super shiny helmets or neon colors.

See, Oregon knows how to do alt unis well, Indiana and NW do not.

Dave brandon found out that by replacing bowl game patches with bowl game Jerseyz he could make more money.  Game changer.  I can't wait to see what the Adidas people come up with for this years bowl.

How bad will it be when we come in to the gator bowl wearing who knows what and Georgia comes in wearing thier classic uniform and pounds us.  As long as the recroooots like it won't matter.

This fucking board feeds on complaining. It needs complaining to survive. When there is not something to actually complain about, or when the normal fodder has grown stale, it will make shit up.

I like it. I think they did a nice job.

If they're going to do this, might as well get a full new alternate uniform. Unless it is the Rose Bowl or College Football Playoffs, I don't care. Do whatever you want.

The Game? No. Don't touch it.
