Helmet Stickers:Yes or No
What if they were stickers of your avatar?
Upgraded to a Maybe.
In all reality, big time College football players are motivated by much more than stickers. I am for anything that give UM an advantage, but I don't thing helmet stickers are one of them.
it takes away from the Wings!!!
They make the helmet look trashy. Coaches should find some other way of rewarding good performance.
the SEC seems to have found a way of giving the players incentive for quality play other than helmet stickers. lets not follow suit.
is switching to sports car stickers for 2011.
get inked in.
No. But thanks for asking.
We have The Winged Helmet....there's no way you can take away from it and add stickers, thanks for asking though. Jus wouldn't look good with Mich
It looked pretty good for 25 yrs.
to see any other tradition than Kicking the shit out of Ohio St, MSU, Wisc, and ND and any and all non Conf foes up to and including bowl opponents. Make some recent history and a some new tradition
now those are some traditions I can get behind, hopefully they all start up in 2011! no helmet stickers for me, the wings are all that are needed.
He has to consult the mafia before deciding on helmet stickers? This guy knows which side the bread is buttered.
Why mess with helmet perfection?
I am a fan of them.
Then we sir are on two different wavelengths
i agree, i dont like them.
but if they do decide to bring them back, they need better lookin stickers.
Please no. That's Buckeye Bullsh**. And they're ugly. They only kind of work on a helmet that's otherwise bare. Ours is already perfect, and has plenty going on.
Actually Bo was the one that started the helmet sticker tradition. Woody then copied the idea.
i wouldn't be surprised if Hoke brings them back, but I think it's better without them
I'd rather not but I wouldn't really care if we did.
I like em because that's how the helmets looked when I was a kid and first fell in love with UofM watching Desmond. Brings back memories.
I don't like them but it makes the players work/practice harder, imo.
The helmet, looks infinitely better without the stickers.
Bo - Yes
Moeller - Yes
Lloyd - No
RichRod - No
Hoke - ???
Did SDSU use helmet stickers?
According to Google images, no.
I'm looking at pictures of SDSU from last year, and it doesn't look like they have any, but if anyone knows, feel free to correct me
For the excellent imagery, to which I can only add, Hell No.
I couldn't help but think that smile reminded me of Desmond...That got me to looking and he sure got some dental work done with the new job didn't he! Still the man!
p.s. kick Herbstreit in the nuts for me would ya
Im pretty impartial about it. I think they look better without them, but if they help performance (even a little), then Im on board for them.
Why mess with something so perfect already?
Because Bo used them...
Because Bo used them...
It wouldn't bother me. But the idea that Section 1 would probably write a diary about how Rich Rodriguez would have never got away with it makes me lean toward yes.
what if they were nike swooshes?
no it is.
I am surprised nike hasn't done this to some team already.
Wings look so good that there is no need for stickers.
Also, the buckeye fans might think we are copying them.
IF Hoke does want them, they need to be a lot more subtle than the old ones.
I prefer the clean look of the maize wings on the blue helmet. It works for other teams but I'm not a fan of it for Michigan.
No, thanks. I would like to take all of the stickers off of our helmets and just have the blue with maize wings (I'm pro tiny American flag on the back).
I prefer focusing on the most powerful points of a design and keeping the rest of it simple. Less seems to be more in this case, for me. Emphasize the wings.
EDIT: Unless you'd like to see these:
Well I think we have a new helmet right here... Maybe a nice alternative jersey with Wolverine claw marks all over..
Too "juggalo". Maybe something with a better color scheme....
And we don't need claw marks on our uni's....we'll be the ones putting them on OTHER team's uni's.
Though I'm ok with new gloves from Adidas...
(Still, original helmet pic post, very cool)
Little known fact: It's actually the original helmet design proposed by Fritz Crisler.
He had to go with wings after then M President Alexander Grant Ruthven expressed his displeasure with having Hugh Jackman on the helmet because "Australia was such a shitty movie that I don't want to be reminded of it when I watch us play."
How did he get Princeton to accept it?!? The man truly was a master....
How dare you say something like that.
Fritz Crisler designed the helmets so the QB could see the receivers better.
You really don't understand sarcasm do you?
Alternate Jerseys. I like seeing the same blue on maize combo every saturday. And we don't really have a ton of colors to work with. No fashion show just football.
Emphatically no. If you want to reward a player with a sticker, give him a plaque at the end of the year with the stickers he earned. Leave the helmet free of the distraction they cause on the eyes. The helmet is the best in all of College leave it alone.
That's kind of a cool idea, if executed correctly. I've always (ashamed, for sure) been a little jealous of the gold pants tradition at tsio. I wish we had a cool tradition commemorating our victories in The Game.
No because helmet stickers only passable on less complex helmets like OSU's or Georgia's. Plus those wolverine heads are just too big. I do like what Georgia does with it's bones though. White for athletics and black bones for academic. Sparty give's an "S" for every week not in jail.
I would never be 100% for it but if they were just small block "M"s instead of those massive stickers it might be at least tolerable.
I have always wondered why some of the bones were black. I assumed it was for really good plays or TDs. Thanks for clearly something up that I could never remeber to google. +1
Thanks, just more of the useless knowledge I carry!
There is a school out there just gives them away for academics only. I want to say it's Vanderbilt but I might be wrong.
haha, love the sparty comment.
I'm sure this has been on here before but here is a quick Wikipedia list on helmet stickers. Fresno has three different colors and like Georgia Florida State recognizes academic achievements as well which is something I really like since they are student athletes.
Ahh, no wonder I rarely see any black bones.
I like them but they would definitely have to be block M's like you said
No. We have the best helmets in The League. You don't mess with perfection.
Psssshhhh try universe.
TBF, Schembechler and his staff at Miami invented the helmet sticker idea. It may not look great but there's an undeniable connection between Michigan and helmet stickers.
True, but people also forget that we are the first to do the "Script O-H-I-O".
I think the stickers go against the belief that everything is about the team. No player or coach is more important than the team. I heard that is why coach Carr stopped using helmet stickers. They werent what the University of Michigan football program stood for.
Yeah, I think they make it about it about individual achievement and tend to separate the stars from everyone else.
Give them out on a per unit basis! Promotes unity in each phase of the game. Also, if it was good enough for Bo its good enough for me.
I am a yes, but only because they wore them when I was an undergrad. (Desmond Howard, baby!) However, this not something I care a great deal about. It seems that people who are anti-stickers care a lot more about this than those of us who want them. Hoke should probably just forget about it and avoid the drama.
Absolutely no way.
It was pretty nice to see a brace from Torres yesterday!
HELL NO!!! Would you put a bumper sticker on a Ferrari, a tattoo covering Denise from Taco Bells face? No, you don't mess with a thing of beauty.
I'd be fine with them, but I'd like them a lot better if they were redesigned a little bit. Maybe more like the stanford helmet stickers.
Yes, absolutely! They raise the level of competition.
Arguing about aesthetics is a moot point. Stickers aren't meant to make the helmet look better or worse, they are used to reward performance. Players would benefit from that extra bit of competition.
Practice hard to compete to be a starter. Play hard to help your team win. Sluff off and you don't get to wear the helmet at all. If you need stickers to compete, I don't know how you belong on the team.
Competing against the other team brings its own rewards.
the way they give gold stars to elementary school children?
I've always liked them, regardless of what school has the stickers on their helmet. I would certainly like to see it come back and I never felt it clashed with the winged helmet. If it doesn't, though, I won't be too distraught. The re-emergence of a pro-style offense will be enough for me to enjoy for a while.
If Hoke brings them back, hopefully the stickers are a little smaller.
I personally would rather keep the helmet the way it is now but won't freak out if Hoke decides to bring them back. If they were smaller I don't think it would be that bad.
The stickers look good on some of the more plain helmets but not on helmets with wings. No stickers please!
and the helmet stickers. That is an era gone by. But too many teams use them for trivial performance. Coaches want everyone on their team to have a helomet full of stickers. It looks as though the entire team are studs.
If there was a standard such as entire offence gets one for a TD and defence gets one for shutout then Im ok with it. Otherwise, we have the best helmet on the planet. Why mess with the best?
a B1G TEN championship or two in the next few years I would take them. Otherwise it messes up the classic look of our helmets.
yeah im for helmet stickers if they are all blue and only put on the blue portion of the helmet.
I like that idea. Perhaps as a second choice they could go with 'clear' stickers.
...on my helmet when I graduated and I cherished them. Still do. I grew up dreaming of wearing a Michigan helmet full of them, and all of my teammates were thrilled when they received them. And I like the idea of awarding individual excellence within a team concept. When I played we only got stickers if we won, so individual goals were only awarded when the entire team succeeded.
I'd stay away from it. Besides the clutter, it doesn't promote team unity.
Probably because I began watching Michigan football when they had them.
How about the coaches and team decide what motivates them and then the rest of us shut our pie holes and just support the decision and move on......if it brings out the competitor just a bit more for one or two kids, great.
Historically UM has had stickers and I can understand why most people would want them. But the fact is most fans, especially on the national level, would not know that and would assume UM is doing it to be like that school in Ohio. There is no way I want anyone to think we are trying to emulate that school.
Why would anyone think we're trying to emulate 'that school in Ohio'? Many schools have helmet stickers.
For Michigan was doing it at Miami before OSU started going it.
Still don't like them, but not for that reason. Just no reason to mess with perfection.
Really? Do I really have to explain the mindset of most young kids out there today? Do I have to explain how the average, casual fan who knows nothing of UM tradition will view it? How about the average Buckeye nutfan? You think they're smart enough to realize that Bo started the whole thing? I assure you they are not and since we are linked by rivalry to that school in Ohio many will assume that is where it came from.
The helmet is perfection without the stickers, why clutter it?
If helmet stickers are to return to the helmets, then maybe have a max amount that are allowed on the helmet. Maybe say after every tenth one, change the color or shape of the sticker. Keep it classy, but also bring back tradition.
I'm saying no, but wouldn't be pissed if we implemented them again. I just prefer out helmets with less clutter.
If we were to go to helmet stickers i would want them to only be rewarded for great play. I just wouldnt want them to be handed out like OSU does for dressing for the game and other BS. I may be wrong on this but i think one OSU player got 12 in one game. As long as it wouldnt get to that point i could live with it, but still not a fand of the idea.
EDIT: Now that i look down my point is much more clear.
Thanks. the helmets look classy now. Don't want to look like osu helmets for sure.
This is art.
This is clutter.
My thought exactly...
As said before, it's most associated with Ohio. Even though we did have a tradition of it, our famous helmet is a strong enough image - I think we hurt that brand by reincarnating a tradition which is made famous by our ultimate rival.
I love the idea of a block M sticker, if it is small enough to not ruin the perfection of the winged helmet. Why not make a sticker for academic achievements as well? For instance, the right side is block M's, for athletic achievement, and the left side could be a different sticker to signify academic achievement.
And I pais $200,000 to M in tuition, so my vote counts more :)
No. They're nothing but ugly clutter.
They look ridiculous and disrupt the classic look of the helmet. I sort of get it on a boring helmet like Ohio State's, but definitely not on ours.
could not express it better than Mr. Scott
MSU even adorns their ski-masks with tiny Sparty Stickers
No. With Arby's logo? Still no.
What if we get curly fries?
I would support stickers. My only concern is how this would be percieved nationally. Could be seen as a lame attempt at restoring some old mojo. Probably best to leave the helmets as they are.
Only if they were small and mounted in an inconspicuous area of the helmet--around the ear-holes, perhaps.
I would say no from the coaches' perspective because I would think you would want to emphasize a team atomsphere rather than glorifying individual accomplishments.
Bo preached "the team, the team, the team" and yet he created the stickers. They can go hand in hand.
True, just my opinion.
I think the players would like to bring back one of Bo's traditions. Still, the staff would need to figure out how to triple stack for Denard.
Im all in for stickers
I say yes, a design change of the stickers may be required but I like the Idea of them that it gives players something to work even harder for. Gives recognition to the leaders of the team and shows younger players who to look up to on and off the field.
I'm in the hell yes old school!
When you have the best helmets in college football, as we do, you don't clutter them up with stickers. You don't clutter them up with ANYTHING.
That's a negative ghost rider
Only if they feature that wolverine biting the head off brutus.
Win as a team.Lose as a team.
Individual rewards can be reflected by playing time and touches.
The helmet is in a class of its own.
Don’t litter it. That tradition is one I would let go.
Maybe the decals could be displayed on their lockers or pins on their letter jacket.
Prefer no but they are alright.
I liked them back in the 80s, but I think if you can find some video from the 70s, I think the helmet stickers back then were really ugly.
I seen that.
hey sorry i am new on this blog and was wondering how to open a new thread on MGoBoard?
The main thing I am wondering is besides the guys we keep hearing about (McClure, Ravens, Willingham, Thomas, Clark ect.) does anyone have any news about some of the longshots or guys that arent making official visits in these last 3 weeks?
Also, has anyone heard if the rumor that Hoke is back in contact with Kris Frost has any validity to them or not?
You have to reach a certain amount of points.
Also I believe Kris Frost is already at Auburn? Maybe not.
any idea how many points you need to have?
and no Kris Frost did not enroll early at auburn that much i know and added to the fact that they didnt really even want him makes me think that due to Hokes new shown ability to recruit effectively (given the short time frame this has been very impressive so far) I have heard that Frost may be reconsidering and atleast talking to our staff again.
Nah. Why mess with perfection?
If our helmets were bare, I'd consider it, but I really don't like them. It makes me think Ohio State too much.
Not feeling the stickers.
I think you're overreacting.
yes, definitely over reacting...at least a little
My preference is to leave it as it is. If Hoke decides to add them I hope that he uses something different from the old HS.
Maybe a squashed maize and blue buckeye or trampled spartan hat.
Yes for Stickers. Why? It reminds me of a time when we were not losing to App St for a season opener, or Mississippi St. by a gazillion points on NYD, we were beating tOSU, MSU, ND consistently....and well frankly we just kicked everyone's asses.
We still have it in us. Generation to generation, Michigan has not changed. Just got to go out there an execute. So bring back the stickers if it helps our young men. I could care less if they don't look pretty. Go to Oregon if you want that or to the SEC and drink "Cam Cam" juice.
On a more serious note. I'm 10000000 percent against the old oval wolverine stickers.
I could be talked into smaller round block M stickers.
Or stickers with the Ohio Bobcat punching Brutus in the face.
The helmets are great the way they are.
This just in: Joe-Pa has been using all-white helmet stickers for over 40 years.
They clutter up the helmets too much.
no no no no no
Traditional Teams should not use gimmicky junk. Mucks up an already nice looking helmet.
Can OSU stickers be traded for tattoos?
Yes and $100 per. It is a new Buckeye policy to keep players of Pryor's ilk.
I did start being a fan during the Bo era although I am pretty sure Moeller kept them as well. I will say that the helmets on the 85 defensive line had a different look with so many stickers.
Bo was using them before OSU, not sure if Michigan did before OSU, so I wouldnt worry about the copy worries.
But more important, lets start winning again. If Hoke thinks they help motivate the team, bring them back. If he doesnt, leave them off.
One of Bo's assistants at Miami invented them for the Miami freshman team, then Bo broght it to the varsity squad. Hayes instituted them at OSU in '68 and Bo broght them to Michigan in '69.
Stopped putting them on the helmets in '95. He wanted to stress the team over individual performance.
Yes, they make the helmet even more interesting especially from a distance.
No, no, a thousand times no.
For selfish reasons, just because I think they make helmets look like nascar. Also, if you want to get all philosophical about it, (even though Bo used them) I don't think "The Team, The Team, The Team" goes very well with rewards for personal achievements.
But yeah, mostly cuz they look tacky.
Thats a big no
seems to fly in the face of "the team, the team, the team".
I vote NO. Makes the helmet look cluttered and takes away from the "wing lines" Why have wings if you fill in between with stickers?
Stickers are for elementary school.
Bring back the Wolverine heads.
No, the helmets without the stickers have such a clean look and as mentioned in other posts it is about the team not individual accomplishments just my opinion.
It's old school. I always loved them.
I say no to helmet stickers because quite frankly it disturbs the traditional esthetics of the UM football uniform. Why mess with perfection. If they decide they have to do it I hope they're small and less instrusive that what I've seen in the past. Maybe little block M's or something like that.
Back to the future!!
Typical Age of NO voters: 29 and under
Typical Age of YES voters: 35 and over
You can call me atypical then.
No. See TennBlue for explanation.
Maybe they should look like this.
no. unless it is one sticker per win. then maybe.
I would support helmet stickers if they were awarded to the whole team for a victory over tuos. That would be a cool tradition and wouldn't clutter the helmet. OTOH, it could be a depressing reminder that things haven't been going so well.
I don't think UM's helmets would look very attractive with a bunch of stickers covering the helmet design
have to give them out. Better to spend that time doing their job. It would be like giving points for posting on a blog - it can create a lot of useless stat based play. The players know who the leaders are.
Keep the helmet clean. That team down south can have that tradition. Also, please don't put a countdown clock in the locker room. We should strive for overall excellence, not become obsessed over one opponent like MSU or the team to the south. I think it's great that they are so fond of us but we have higher aspirations IMO.
No stickers on the helmet. The helmet looks better without stickers.
Five pages? Really? About helmet stickers?
You need to embrace the 300 comment/page madness. (I really only use the 300 comment one because the "New" tag doesn't carry over to the second page for me).
It's the middle of the night and nobody can sleep. What else is there to argue about?
Some people have very strong opinions about this topic. And here I thought they were just stickers. At this point, I'm gonna say no so that Hoke doesn't have to deal with the drama if he brings them back.
No and I feel pretty strongly about it.
Oh please... are you seriously asserting that helmet stickers were a "distraction" for Bo Schembechler, the football-obsessed, singular-focus guy who instituted the practice? What's next—are you going to say that Bo's preoccupation with helmet stickers was why we lost to Ohio State in 1974?
If a coach doesn't like stickers, he might say they're a distraction, but a coach who does—like Bo—will say they're a valuable and visible way to recognize the achievements each player makes in the pursuit of victory.
I'd like to see them brought back, but I'm far more interested in whether BH can retain Fisher, Posada, and Countess, and get some difference-making DLs and LBs in this class.
It's a no for me. Prefer the clean look...also a needless distraction and focus on individuals.
as the page was loading was 'definitely not', but then i saw the picture and i guess they don't look tooooo bad.
I' ve gotta vote no on this. Our helmets look great as is
I would be for this if they are selective about what they are awarded for. I don't think I would like seeing the entire helmet covered like the bucknuts
No. There are other ways to recognize effort/success.
I think I like the old school appeal of them, but I do agree that after all this time that it may shock me how much the helmet looks cluttered. The idea of the block "M" instead of the wolverine might make it look a lot cleaner (especially if the M's did not have such a large football-shaped background).
Despite the "look" - I know that Lloyd got rid of them because he wanted more of a "team" element. Do you think that the lack of stickers really changed the team dynamic that much? I think it could be a nice reinforcement of solid on-field play or efforts, but I agree that you could reinforce this in another way. However, it may still give players something to aspire for.
If I remember correctly, my uncle's helmet from when he played (best show-and-tell thing ever as a kid -- especially in Ohio) and pictures from when he played display the stickers on them so I think I also have a bit of a personal bias / connection with them.
Here's a good article about them: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/2006-10-26-helmet-stickers_x.htm (states that Bo started up helmet stickers after seeing medals for military recognition).
If done the right way, I'd be all for it.
I really don't mind a whole lot either if we have the stickers or not.
I'm not a fan of them. Especially since you already have something original going with Michigan's helmets. Stickers are overdone by a lot of teams, why lose the originality of the Michigan helmets?
they're given out carefully and with due cause. Maybe like a maximum of 10 per helmet.
I feel that if it was done correctly (i.e. small stickers only given for extraordinary achievement and/or big impact plays) that it may bring extra motivation to the team. But from an aesthetic POV it's just not a good idea.
Overall, I just care about wins.
Nice post kid, but the last coach to have stickers was Mo, and I hope it stays that way til I'm gone in 60 years or so.
NO to helmet stickers--this is a "TEAM" sport--the stickers proclaim one persons efforts when it takes a team to win. Kinda like the no's on 'em though--old school
