Helmet design deviations.

Submitted by Firstbase on
Last year I noticed subtle differences in the Michigan helmets. For instance, Denard's hat has a 3D contoured stripe and the wings extend further up on the helmet than Tate's. The brand looks the same to me, but I'm wondering why the difference? I could be accused of being anal about this, but it's piqued my curiosity.

I'm not a member of PETA or anything but damn, that's pretty shocking. I certainly wouldn't describe that as funny. Obviously a lot of crazy stuff happened back in the day in many different arenas. Seems like they could have made reasonably accurate conclusions by using coconuts or something. [/soapbox]

As a U of M student (1990-94), I took a class called Football Theory. I sat next to Rod Payne each class. Why a starting center needs to take football theory is beyond me, but I digress. I didn't get credit for it, but I got to go to Schembechler Hall once a week and be lectured to by members of the football staff. I got to meet Bo. Yes, it was great. Anyway, when the equipment manager, John Falk, took his turn to lecture, he went into great detail about these monkey studies. My friend and I looked at each other and did everything to keep from laughing at the idea of monkeys with football helmets being shot at a wall. It was a little disturbing and unethical imo as well, which made me remember the story clearly. So there you go.
