Hello: WR Da'Mario Jones

Allen Trieu‏@AllenTrieu

Westland John Glenn (Mich.) senior WR Da'Mario Jones has committed to #Michigan - full story coming: http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=162&f=1088&t=10277488 …

Wouldn't be surprised if the staff spoke with Conley and they decided to fill his spot with a WR. I don't think this means Treadwell is off the table.

when

someone doesn't choose Michigan, it doesn't always mean something fishy is going on. His best friend (former M committ) Anthony Standifer goes there and I'm sure he's having a great time when he visits.

you don't think

when recruits come to Michigan they are showed a good time by their hosts? You have your head in the ground if you think this doesn't happen at Michigan.

I'm sure UM has their own

I'm sure UM has their own hosts/hostesses, it's just that there's never been any evidence or even stories about us whoring girls out for recruits

As for the SEC schools doing it, I don't think it's as prevalent as OP suggested, but there's definitely been more stories from down South than up here

One of my best friends in HS

One of my best friends in HS said on his recruiting visit to Wisconsin all the recruits on the trip were lined up outside a room. The room was full of women giving them all BJs. He had a lot of fun on the trip. He committed to ND though. 100% true story.

I'm not

suggesting anything so blatant as whoring out girls, but I'm sure the recruits may be at parties where the girls in attendance would be more than happy to recieve the attention of a high profile future athlete.

Ole Miss?

I don't know what they do over there,  but they sure are great at the "one-visit close."  I'm guessing that something must be happening that recruits see as really special during their visits.  I wonder what that could be?

He hasn't chosen Michigan,

Because he doesn't want to commit, then de-commit to take visits.  Relax, he is still in play.

Probably to replace Conley

If Gareon had set up a visit to OSU  that opens up another spot.  Doubt it takes the Quan's place.

Judging by what has happened the past 48 hours or so...

I would guess that this has little impact on the three remaining recruits we are looking at (Green, Treadwell and McQuay). I would say it is 100% Conley being out of the picture. Any scouting reports on this guy?

He was recruited as a corner

He was recruited as a corner originally, but more recently, the coaches had informed him that he could play wide receiver, too.

Conley still has to speak

Conley still has to speak with Hoke about his OSU visit...he isn't 'gone' yet.

It's one of two thing:

1) Conley is definitely gone and the staff knows it. The public didn't until now.

2) Treadwell is no longer on the table.

Darboh was an Iowa high

Darboh was an Iowa high school student in the spring.

Also, if you look at this:

Jackson - J. Robinson - R. Miller - Dileo - Gallon - Darboh - Chesson

and see more than 1 solid starting WR in 2013, go to the eye doctor. This team needs WRs.

I'm sure that nobody is ready

I'm sure that nobody is ready to count Chesson and Darboh as sure things at this point.

Our return corps will be:

Dileo - SR

Gallon - SR

Jackson - SR

Darboh - Soph

Chesson - RS Freshman

Robinson - RS JR

that's pretty dark.

It's plenty of depth, yes.

It's plenty of depth, yes. but the two players closest to "established" on that list are seniors (Dileo, Gallon). I think it makes sense to get a bunch of guys at this point, given that we don't know for sure if we have ANYTHING at this point

Are we THAT invested in RB's?

Are we THAT invested in RB's? The approach, to me, appears to be similar to our WR approach - a slew of 3-stars, with a very highly-rated hope in play.

Or the staff realizes a 3rd

Or the staff realizes a 3rd guaranteed WR is more important than a 5th OL, which looking at the 2011-13 recruiting classes in total, is probably a rational decision. Borges needs more lottery tickets at the skill positions.

If anyone has watched his highlights on hudl he looks like a guy who can score from anywhere on the field. As we all saw against nebraska, we only really have one of those right now and he plays QB.
I doubt this means anything about LT and more that he is a good player and a spot opened up.

I give that 40 time FIVE FAKES out of FIVE.

There's no way an under-the-radar type runs faster than 4.6 in High School even if they are considered a speedster.

Either way, I like the 6'2" aspect of it, assuming that's 100% true.

Let me preface this by saying

Let me preface this by saying I hope you're right, and Da'Mario Jones is a legit 4.4 as you're suggesting. That said, my entire point was that Rivals 40 reports do not seem that accurate compared to lets say an electronically run 40 at something like The Open. The number I'm skeptical about (Da'Mario Jone's 4.4) is the number reported by Rivals, just as Chris Johnson's highschool time of 4.3 compared to his NFL Combine time of 4.2 suggests he probably had a worse high school 40 time than the reported 4.3. You would think Chris Johnson got more than .1 seconds faster in the 40 over 4 years in college, as most players do. Thus, if his 4.2 NFL time is accurate, isnt it possible his real 40 in high school was more like 4.5 and Rivals was a bit inaccurate in its report of a 4.3?

Either way, I truly hope Da'Mario is a legitimate 4.4 and just burns everybody the second he gets on campus, but I can't help but be a little skeptical.

We've recruited 2 WR's in the last 2 years.

1 is a 4-star. I think our WR recruiting shows "we haven't done it".

Lets also see how we finish this class, and where Duke/York end up?

In general I agree with you - we want to have elite WR prospects. Elite anything prospects.

According to Sam Webb our

According to Sam Webb our coaches were very impressed with his speed when he camped at Michigan and considered him a potential deep threat type of receiver.

He is a raw talent with great atheleticism  and could play defense as well.   Right now it looks like he is being recruited as a (much needed) receiver... but you can never have too many  corners.

A Tom VH article on ESPN Insider a few weeks ago noted he recently transferred from a school in Jersey and that may be why he's been overlooked.

Those numbers are pretty ridonculous if not FAKE.

Honestly, I wonder if this has anything to do with the weird tendency for wide receivers to have a diva side to their personalities and a possible lack of mutual interest between more diva-like prospects and Michigan football (where the style of our current coaches and program is more down-to-earth than flashy).

Regardless... welcome, Da'Mario.

Obviously we are still in it for a few top rated WRs but I really don't think we'll see a committment of several top rated WRs in one class until people see how our quarterbacks develop in the pro-style system and how borges implements it. What will really help the QBs progress is a solid & effective stable of RBs, so let's hope that happens.

Welcome Da'Mario

Happy to land Da'Mario, but it's nonetheless concerning that at this point in the recruiting process more highly rated talent is going than coming.  Then again, Jake Ryan wasn't highly touted and I'd take 11 of him on defense any day.  Either way welcome Da'Mario!

Recruiting stars don't mean

Recruiting stars don't mean much these days, given all the studs that come out of nowhere (Jake Ryan). I trust the coaching staff on this kid. They must see something in him that they really like. If they can hit a diamond in the rough like Stribling, I have faith that this kid will be just fine.

Its kind of disheartening to see 75% of the comments in this thread be anything other than "Welcome aboard, Da'Mario!" or the like.  C'mon people - lets show this young man the same love we show in all the other "Hello:" posts.  I know you all think it, so lets say it in case he's reading this.

Its hard to read a lot of these comments bashing the kid and his talents. Congrats too the kid. I'm sure all u fans that don't want him because he's not a 5* wr, you must not be a 5* fan, we have some of the most whinniest and unappreciative fans. I'm sure every college does. But sheesh. Disappointed...

99+ responses and not one use of "Wasteland"? Come on...I thought mgoblog was better than that.

Nice to see someone from the tri-cities (Garbage City-Stinkster-Wasteland) making it big.

Shacktown for the win.

Shacktown for the win. Shacktown, A beautiful sub-division, nestled in Westland, that should be on a Pure Michigan postcard.

Maybe just maybe it had

Maybe

just maybe

it had nothing to do with Michigan, or even football.

He's look at like 6 different schools, and does things other than "get recruited". Just because that's the extent of your interest in him doesn't mean it's all he tweets about.

i wish there was a way to block all content on this site about kids that haven't yet signed an LOI with michigan.

treadwell isn't coming here, just like pharoah and conley aren't coming here. i wasted several hours of my life reading about them and i'd like for that not to happen again.

ugh

Welcome aboard Da'Mario.

Welcome aboard Da'Mario. Great to have you as a M Wolverine.

A 3* offered after his Senior year of  HS is complete, is probably more likely to workout for the program than a 4 star verbal from the summer before his Senior season. More overall info, less time for recruit to get restless, in all, just more time for staff to do their due diligence.

If you look at Da'Mario compared to Dukes and York, he looks to be faster and more explosive than both those guys, yet they are probably higher rated. Figuring out the difference between a 3* and a 4* can be incomprehensible at times

Da'mario does lo quicker than York and Dukes, but both of those guys are certainly bigger than Jones.

That's probably a good complement though, so we're good.

Jumped the gun?

My first thought is why didn't we just wait on Treadwell? It isn't like this kid was going anywhere he woulda commited on signing day. With that being said, looking at how weak we are at that position I highly doubt it affects Treadewells decision because he would be the best wr we have when and if he steps on campus.

Are Treadwell and Green as important to Hoke/AL as Pryor was to RichRod. With Pryor RichRod would still be around with a few B1G Championships (and prob a sanction). I think no but with all the Offense bashing lately?

Welcome to Michigan, Da'Mario!

Didn't see the YouTube highlights posted, so here they are:

At least from the clips, it looks like he has good hands and is a good route runner, which would be a big plus for the West Coast offense schemes certainly.

Not sure how good the competition he plays against is, but looks like a good athlete that can be a contributer if coached up properly (after saturday....legit concern about the WR coaching, seems like a lot of our wideouts have regressed)

Why not take another QB? We lose Denard (and Jack Kennedy??). We pick up Shane and have Bellomy and Gardner. Seems pretty thin.

I think the knock on him has been "quickness", not so much his top end speed.  I would also argue that because of his size (6' 2 (+?) and running style (longer strides) his overall speed is much more deceptive (think Braxton Miller).

Chris Johnson was already blazing fast in high school

Johnson played football at Olympia High School in Orlando. Johnson was also a track star at Olympia High. In his senior year, he finished second in the 100 meters at the 2004 Florida 4A state championships behind 08 Olympic bronze medalist Walter Dix.  4.3 second 40yd high school time, legit.

WELCOME DaMario Jones, I am glad he is going to be a Wolverine. It was evident from the pictures of DaMario hanging out with the with the commits at the BBQ that he wanted to go to Michigan.

Congratulations to this young man and I look forward to watching him take the field.

Magnus, a few posters above have brought up the QB situation.  I don't know if you've previously posted something, but I would be interested to hear your take on the overall situation at QB and what we may be looking at moving forward.

I think Michigan should have

I think Michigan should have taken a QB in the 2012 class; that really bothered me.  I also think Michigan should take another QB in the 2013 class, but if Shane Morris would be chased off by that, then I'd stick with one.  He's not the type of kid you want to chase away, and he doesn't seem like a flaky kid who you really have to worry about getting into trouble or transferring.

I think Devin absolutely has to move back to QB full-time next year and start ahead of Bellomy.  Bellomy's still a couple years away, in my opinion; he might even be a career backup behind Denard, Gardner, and then Morris.

This staff has recruited some really talented kids, but they've also chosen not to recruit some key components (QBs in 2012/2013, Devin Lucien at WR in 2011, etc.).

Thank you for the quick response.

I asked the question, wondering specifically if we might see a close-to-signing-day offer for another QB, because it does seem like the depth is needed.  I understand it appears unlikely at this point, but if there are spots left and someone is serviceable, do you take him?  At this point it seems correct to assume that if some sort of "nightmare" situation arises, the coaches feel confident enough that a walk-on could/would be a serviceable game manager (I will now pray that Shane doesn't flame-out or get seriously injured, etc.)?

With the way the coaches are holding off on offers for 2014, it seems like they are going to be content with taking one again this year (correct me if I'm wrong).  In that case, it just seems like the coaches are asking for trouble.  Too me, it would make sense to take two in 2014 (if not in 2013); but, the coaches are probably a bit better at this than I (so who knows).

As far as Devin Lucien, that is REALLY something I look back and "sigh" on.  I don't remember your break down, but I can't really remember anyone predicting him making SUCH an impact THIS quickly.

Thanks again.

If there are spots left and

If there are spots left and someone is serviceable, then yes, *I* would take him.  But I'm not the head coach at U of M, so what do I know?  I really think a program should take at least one QB every year, and Michigan had taken at least one for something like 14 straight recruiting classes until 2012.

I didn't have Lucien pegged as a superstar, but I was pretty high on him and I was frustrated when Hoke didn't try to reel him in as a WR.  He's not doing superstar-ish things at UCLA (10 catches, 188 yards before getting sidelined with a broken clavicle), but he's a redshirt freshman with some upside.

6'2 receiver

6'2 receiver with speed? I'll take it. We need depth at receiver anyways, might as well give the local kid a shot at living his dream of playing at Michigan.
