Hello: Spike Albrecht
Per Dylan Burkhardt, Spike is planning on signing with Michigan on Friday.
Welcome Spike!
He might not have as many stars as Brundidge, but I bet he'll be a better player.
stick around longer.
Ok, so I just took a small step back from the ledge. Welcome Spike, your name is awesome!
Awesome. Welcome Spike!
Regardless of whether Burke does a 180 and comes back or not, we need PGs and this is big news.
based on his name alone , he was worthy of an offer. Welcome Spike!
Great that we have a PG for next year. And Amedeo Della Valle is probably still an option too.
Welcome to the family Spike
This kid has one and done written all over him. I wonder why UNC and UK never got around to extending him an offer? No but really, I think this kid is solid and who knows, he might have a little bit of Dave Sobolewski in him.
If he's as good as Soblewski was his frosh year, I think we go from being a bubble team to being solidly in the tournament. Of course this is if Burke leaves.
Reminds me of D Morris! As long as he can rack up assists for Morgan, Hardway, GRIII, and McGary I'm really happy to have him.
he has nowhere near the same size or athleticism. The player people compare him to is the Northwestern PG who looked completely overmatched in B1G play. Its time to temper the expectations.
Dave Sobolewski. Brian recently said, "Sobolewski had an impressive freshman year and will take on big chunks of the scoring load left by Shurna." So bad, right?
But keep on telling everyone this team is going to be as good as 2003 Montana.
Stop making up false arguments. I never said this team will be 2003 Montana (whatever that means).
Its hilarious how some people just can't handle anything remotely negative. There is a reason this kid's only offers are App St, Davidson and other low majors. Sobolewski is this kids best case scenario and he was manhandled in B1G play regardless of what Brian thinks.
He must be worth having. I don't think Beilein would offer him a scholarship just for the sake of adding bodies at the PG position.
Blake McLimans and Colton Christian beg to differ.
Unless of course you've been living under a rock the past two days.
I have a feeling that by the end of Spike's career at Michigan, he will be, in fact, quite loved.
I really dig this addition to the class. This is what you call "filling a position of need." With quality might I add.
Good pickup and addition to this class.
He may not be an "elite" PG, but tape shows he's willing to go to the rack, has a good finish on his three point shots and has good court vision while bringing the ball up. I think once he's on-campus, a good workout program will really benefit him and make him that much stronger against Big Ten competition.
Welcome, Spike!
One clarification on the OP:
Per Dylan Burkhardt, Spike is planning on signing with Michigan on Friday.
He may be planning to commit tomorrow, but he can't sign. The spring signing period doesn't start until April 11.
Thanks for the input. I just went by what I read on the link.
This is for the '12 class, for which McGary, GRIII, and Stauskas are already signed. Is there an early window, which closes until April?
There is an early signing period in November.
The early signing period in November lasts just one week. For future reference, see this page for NLI signing dates.
If Burke comes back, I'd much rather have Amadeo. Even if Burke doesn't come back, I'm still not sure I'd offer this kid until I heard back from Amadeo. Amadeo has way more upside and could slide to SG when Walton gets to campus.
Except for that whole not really a point guard thing. If we're going to develop a guard with size to be a PG I'd rather it was Stauskas.
We only have 8 (out of 13 available) scholarship guys returning next year. That number includes Burke and Akunne. We can take Spike and Amadeo. If Trey leaves OR if Akunne is put back on walk-on status, we can take yet another player for next year.
Amadeo has never played PG. Other than that, he'd be perfect. Filling an immediate gaping hole with a position changing project with upside doesn't sound very wise, does it? I think they want Amadeo too, because we're still light on guards. His possibly being able to play the point would be a bonus, but his skills at SG are the main attraction. Our need for backcourt depth even when Walton arrives is pretty clear.
Obviously this fills a huge hole for 12-13, but can anyone project the long-term prospects for him? Will he likely be a four-year starter, or could he be replaced by a more talented underclassman in a few years?
Assuming he doesn't have NBA talent (or he wouldn't be available this late), it might be good to have more consistency at the PG spot for Beilein--as talented as Morris and Burke were, they still struggled at times as freshmen, and it might be good (better even?) to have a guy who will have lots of experience in the system, assuming he makes it through this and next year.
All of the comments on this thread are conspicuously optimistic... but finally, someone who calls it like it is
You need to find some happiness in your life.
I was laughing at another guy's comment and you (or someone) mark me as flamebait... I was just pointing out that everyone in this thread is saying stuff like "From the film he looks legit!... He'll fit perfect into Beilein's system!... He's not ranked by the Scouting services but I'm sure they just overlooked him, he's a solid 3-star no doubt!"
No disrespect at all to Mr. Albrecht but he is shorter, less athletic, and younger than Douglass was when he ran the floor in 2009-10. I would be more thrilled than anyone if he turns out to be a diamond in the rough but it's just not that likely.
Talk about shooting the messenger...
In this highlight video he seems to be able to shoot, as well as throw the alley-oop, hit reverse layups, gritty layups, and free throws.
This kid is very Novac-ish. I like em.
Beilein already has a commitment from a highly touted point guard in the 2013 class, Derrick Walton Jr.
I don't think anyone has a good track record doing so for Beilein's recruits here so far. Who thought Novak would be a 4-year starter, primarily at PF, Burke could be a one and done, etc.
With all the talent coming in this year, a pass-first PG is just fine. He might not play D very well yet, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have the talent to do so. Playing defense is about focus, and John Beilein is very good at teaching players how to do just that.
I guess some good came out of all this. Cant find him listed scouts and rivals though??
He's good enough to be rated by the recruiting services, they just havent gotten around to it. After watching his film, I would say its safe to say he would be an average 3 star. Not that there is anything wrong with that, especially this late and with the current "situation".
Goodbye Monte Morris
That seemed like a longshot to me anyway. Why would Morris agree to come in with the same class as Walton when he has plenty of other options available?
I think it is not complete end of Spike's career but it yet to come. Indeed it will be a great feeling for him and he will like it also.New kitchen cabinets
you nailed it.
I don't think Mr. Robert Harris is here to talk about Michigan sports.
told you guys friday would be a bad day, this is not a good friday for michigan. i think im taking next year off has a fan. this team is going to suck bad
i don't see a lot of people calling him our "savior".... just you.
