OSU/Tressel did indeed give him a full scholarship when he came in, I don't know if he'll maintain it under Meyer.  I remember it was pretty late in the process and Tressel didn't have very many targets left recruiting-wise. Tressel said he did it because the kid had the fastest snap he had ever seen and figured that was the best way to guarantee his commitment.

I'm actually pretty excited about this but I'm probably the only one.  Assuming he's as good as they say, this means we'll likely not have to watch a botched snap to a punter in the endzone etc etc for the duration he's here.  This is one of those parts of the game you never think about until it completely ruins a winnable game and everybody's bitching because we don't have a good enough long snapper.  This attention to detail is encouraging and something that the latter part of the Carr, and the entire duration of RR, had not payed enough attention to, IMO.

edit: and I completely agree w/ the Hello post-  the test will be if we never hear about him in 4 years save an instance like that insane fake field goal in the Sugar Bowl.  If we never talk about long snapping while he's here, it was worth it to give him a scholly, assuming he plays.

I understand for preferred walk-ons why they do that. But are you really trying to tell me that if I had wanted to try out for the football team in general student try-outs I wouldn't have been allowed to since I was on (partial) academic scholarship?

I understand WHY the rule is in place, but I would be surprised if it's as cut-and-dry as "academic scholarship=not allowed to walk-on."

Football is both an identity and a terminal illness. A rhythm and a chaos and an opiate for the mind all at once.

I don't know the rules on partial scholarships but any person playing a sport on scholarship, no matter what the scholarship is actually for, takes up a scholarship for that sport.  If a basketball player wants to play football too, that takes up a scholarship for football as well as basketball.  Same thing for academisc.  If somebody was on a full ride academic scholarsihp then they probably wouldn't make any of the teams because that would take a scholly up for the team.

That's the same source, so that doesn't tell us anything new. We'll see if this is actually a full athletic scholarship. Could be academic. If he's taking a spot in the 85... I'm perplexed, to say the least.

To me it tells me the coaches feel really confident in their other commits and also that they have plugged a lot of holes from what RR left them especially on the lines.

They also must feel that snapper is a position that is needed badly and that a walk-on wouldn't be good enough as Michigan lost a walk-on snapper to Michigan State when they offered.

Tells me that the coaches are feeling pretty confident in the direction of the program and they are building and repairing all aspects of the team.

If Hoke has deemed long snapper a position important enough to spend a scholarship on, then we should take one in the Class of 2013.  Jareth Glanda is a redshirt junior this year, so Sypniewski could redshirt his first year on campus and then be our starting snapper his redshirt freshman year.

Personally, I'm not opposed to spending a scholarship on a snapper if the kid is worth it.  Teams routinely spend scholarships on guys like Mike Cox, who aren't expected to be more than depth guys for most of their career.  If we can secure a long snapper that is 10-20% better than average and plays a key part in 10-12 plays per game, I'm fine with giving him a scholarship.
