Not to be demeaning, but he's got a LOT of good competition coming his way if he wants to see the field. You never know what could happen though.

Congrats to him. Pretty sweet last name if I do say so myself.

That wasn't my intention, but I see where you're coming from there. I'm definitely happy for the guy, hence the congrats.

And yes, as a walk-on I'm sure he's excited just to have the opportunity more than anything.

Dumb post on my part.

Welcome to the family, Mr. Glasgow.

Isn't that kind of understood

Isn't that kind of understood when you're a walkon?

He gets to be on the practice squad for a potential national championship contender and compete for playing time with everyone else, get a fantastic education, and probably never play in the pros.  vs.  Getting to compete for playing time at a lesser school with a good chance at seeing the field, get a slightly less prestigious degree, and probably never play in the pros. Different guys would weigh these options differently.

To enlighten Corky

In a prior analysis it was shown that there is no difference within a program in the rates of 2-, 3- and 4-star recruits eventually going pro... unless a program also signed more than 0.5 to 1 5-star recruit per year.

Within a sub-group made up of Cal, Iowa, Oregon and Va Tech: 12.2%, 12.99% and 13.43% of 2-, 3- and 4-stars (respectively) from the 2002-2005 recruiting cycles eventually went pro.

Within a sub-group made up of Georgia, ohio, and Penn St:  12.5%, 16.2%, and 24.0% of 2-, 3- and 4-stars (respectively) from the 2002-2005 recruiting cycles eventually went pro.

In summary:  If we consider our walk-ons (especially with scholarship offers to other D-1 programs) to be 2- to 3-star material, then we should expect an NFL caliber football player to be produced from among every 8 walk-ons.  I would also surmise that a team with 4 coaches along the lines would be a great place for walk-on linemen to be sculpted into NFL-type talent.

Welcome Mr. Glasgow.  We will all be rooting for you!

I guess this was where my

I guess this was where my "you never know what could happen" part came from.  I know I made it sound pretty awful, but that's what was intended.

As Michigan fans, we of all people should know not to discard one of our athletes just because he wasn't offered a scholarship day 1 of freshman year.  Walk-ons have heavily contributed to our program recently, and I am fully aware of that.  And their contributions to our program as well as every other football program cannot solely be weighed by on-field production.

I'd go ahead and edit my first statement, but maybe it's best to use that as an example to everyone of what not to say if you don't want to look like a dick. Ha.

Can Kovacs play on Sundays?

Can Kovacs play on Sundays? It would be sweet to see him make a roster. He's the only walk on showing that sort of potential. Just thinking about it...1 in 8 seems like a stretch...it's so hard to Goggle those sort of things when you can just speculate. Maybe 1 in 8 who actually start a game.

All your Glasgow's belong to us!

Are there any other brothers?  Kind of nice to have a pipeline of walk-ons good enough to get scholarship offers at other DI schools (Graham at Minnesotta, per ESPN, and Ryan at Wyoming and a bunch of D1-AA schools per response above.)

who's also from Illinois. It would be far too weird to have two kids with that last name who aren't related.

Well having

the Glasgow brothers on the team is gonna be great. Now I am starting to think almost all the OL/DL walk on preffered or not all want to play for Hoke. This has to be testament to Hoke and his working with OL/DL players right?

As much as I hate to rain on some Hoke love, I think it's probably more a function of our poor depth.

That has nothing to do with my post.

The guy I was responding to stated something to the effect that our success recruiting at that position must be because Hoke is a Dline coach. I think depth comes more into play, particularly at O line. I have nothing against walk-ons, and would be fine accepting them even if we were stacked at those positions. Kovacs is my favorite player.

We only get two of the

We only get two of the Glasgow brothers, at least for now.  Big brother Graham, and now Ryan, but according to that linked article, there's another brother rising up thru the ranks -he's now a freshman--Jordan Glasgow.

I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned who his High School assistant coach is---Kurt Becker, who was an All-American for Meeeechigan (I'll take the liberty of using that spelling, as he played back in the day that ol' Bob Ufer---God Bless his cotton-pickin' heart!--- did our play-by-play).  In that linked article in the thread header, Becker gives both Glasgow brothers props, gushing about their athleticism, and about Ryan's aggressiveness.

At his height - he could be a

At his height - he could be a walk-on center, which would be great.  He's a 2012 recruit, so he'll be here this fall.  Then, in 2013, when our only scholarship centers are RS Soph Jack Miller and true frosh Kugler, maybe Ryan Glasgow could add some depth at that spot.  I'm not saying he'll jump Kugler just by being a year older, but the more depth and competition there, the better.

I was thinking of the same

I was thinking of the same thing (center) as I watched the video.  Right combination of height, size, smarts, and aggressiveness to be a good center.  All-in-all, a good late addition to the 2012 class to add depth, competition,  and versatility---welcome aboard, Ryan!

No doubt about.  And with how

No doubt about.  And with how difficult OL is to project, he could be absolutely be a contributor down the road.  Who would have thought that Huyge or Omameh would be starters when guys like Dann O'Niell or Kurt Wermers couldn't sniff the depth chart.

Glasgow!

Welcome to the Wolverine family, Ryan!

Also, Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland. And I love Scotch. Do I love Ryan Glasgow? Well... only time will tell.

edit: Can't believe someone didn't like this video.  It isn't often the topic of Glasgow Football comes up and this video is one of the greatest bad videos ever.

Not Sure Who Cares...

It appears that the Glasgows are from Marmion Military Academy.  As a football alumni of the Suburban Catholic Conference - now the Suburban Christian Conference - myself, I can tell you that he played in the same conference as our own Kyle Bosch.  (As well as Nebraska '12 4* WR Jordan Westerkamp.)  You'll recognize one conference member - Montini Catholic - as the team that Ty Isaac ran roughsod over in last year's state championship game.  Other notable alums of the conference are Bryan Bulaga and Brad Childress.

Not bad for a group of relatively small schools.  I'm sure this is useless information for a lot of you, but as a former Div. 3 OL, I'm proud to see these schools producing some quality OL - and passing them along to the B1G.

Congrats Ryan!

How great would it be if both

How great would it be if both guys turned into Kovacsian style surprises?

Kovacsian.

Great new word. I will use that, if you don't mind. Often. As in, that decapitation was Kovacsian.

Other Ways to Contribute?

As others have said, he passed up scholarship offers from other schools to come to Michigan as a preferred walk-on.  That means he loves Michigan more than he wanted a scholarship to play football elsewhere.

Someone help me here ... aside from depth, isn't there also a need for dedication and intensity on the practice teams?  It seems like someone with that kind of affection for the school and the program could come in, bust ass on the practice teams, help to hone the starters, and just maybe catch the eye of the coaches and get on the field at the Big House?

I admire the walk-ons ... in this day of skyrocketing college tuition, to want to be in a Michigan uniform that much says boatloads about the kid's character.  Bravo to him.  Bravo.
