Hello: PF/C Ricky Doyle (MBB)

Dave Telep‏@DaveTelep

Product of Michigan visit this weekend, JR PF Ricky Doyle (Bishop Verot) is now a Wolverine.

A bit of an under-the-radar recruit since he didn't play AAU ball, but according to ESPN had offers from tOSU, Miami (YTM), Purdue, and Notre Dame. Has been sidelined for a decent portion of the season due to ankle injury, IIRC.

Video from UMHoops here.

Think skilled, but raw, big man, who has a developed post game, can hit the boards, and shoot the three in transition if needed.  Solid defender as well.

Doyle, a 6-foot-9 230 pound big man from Fort Myers, Florida, was relatively under the radar after opting not play AAU basketball. Despite somehwat reduced attention, major schools took notice. Miami, Boston College, Purdue, Kansas State, Penn State, Washington, Stanford and USC were all heavily recuriting the talented post player.

Sounds like the type of player we need in the middle to balance the quickness and shooting we have on the outside.  Should be a great addition.

While venturing into the potentially shallow territory of comparing players of a certain skin color to players of the same skin color, watching those highlights reminds me a lot of Nick Collison.  Both have a solid post game and can knock down the mid range shot.  Both are athletic enough to finish at the rim, but not quite explosive enough to go all De'Andre Jordan on somebody.  They've got that other thing in common too...

If he ends up anywhere close to as good as Collison was at Kansas, we've got a heckuva player.

He looks pretty developed for a post player in high school.  Maybe a last minute growth spirt to put him a shade taller and he will be able to bang down low with best of them.  At 6'9" he better play physical, the Big Ten has not been kind to guys that size this year unless they are physical.  Seems like a solid pickup who can get some minutes to start and work his way into a big post player.

Based on our recent performances, I must ask:

1) Can he defend?

2) Can he rebound?

3) Can he box out an opposing player if he is not able to get a rebound?

4) Can he hit a "bunny?"

5) Does he dunk, instead of make a layup, given the opportunity?

6) Can he hit free throws?

Have seen him in person several times, albeit usually against lower-level competition, and he is impressive. Every December there is a high-level high school tournament here in Fort Myers called the City of Palms Classic. It usually brings in some heavy-weights from around the country. This past December he had to sit out with a stress fracture (foot I believe), which made headlines locally. The tournament is played at his school which is about 3 minutes from the office so I usually get to 5-6 games a season. I might try to post some thoughts/video now that he has committed. By all accounts he is a quality kid as well as a great basketball player.

Please do.   Consider yourself THE local source for Ricky Doyle game analyses and highlights.  Or I could ask my dad to do this since he lives in your neck of the woods, but video cameras and the interwebz scare him.

Doyle didn’t play AAU basketball this summer, opting instead to workout with his high school team and individually. That didn’t prevent college coaches from catching a glimpse of the talented big man, Doyle’s high school team played in two AAU tournaments in July and that was enough for coaches to take notice
